The Graf-Seles rivalry just before Monica got stabbed.

Let me show you.

At that time, Graf led Seles 6-4 in H2H. Right now, Serena leads Justine 6-4 in H2H.

Graf won the first 3 times they played. Serena won the first 2 times they played, but Seles and Justine both had won the last time they played.

There's more. Of the 4 times Seles had beaten Graf only one time was on a non-clay surface. Justine had only beaten Serena on clay.

Graf had 11 slams compared to Seles 8. Serena has 8 compared to Justine's 6.

Graf had completed the Golden Grand slam winning 5 consecutive slams, whereas Serena has completed a non-calender Grand slam winning 4 consecutive slams.

Seles was missing Wimbledon although she had been in the finals there like Justine.

Seles had 3 consecutive titles at the French just like Justine has now.

Seles was #1 then, like Justine is #1 now.

So in other words. Serena and Justine seem to be less dominant (or playing in a more competitive era of tennis) players. But both are following the same script right now.

What do you guys think?

The rivalry actually reminds me of Serena-Capriati in 2004. Capriati beat Serena in the RG quarters, then they met again in the Wimbledon quarters (and eventually in the USO quarters). Serena-Henin could happen in those 3 quarterfinals this year as well.

Very interesting observations! Had Justine converted those 2 match points at Miami it would have been even more interesting!

Let's just be thankful we have a real top rivalry as opposed to the last few years and stop all this silly my player is better/more talented than your player! Justine and Serena are both great champions and only at the end of their careers will we be able to draw a line and compare the achievements.

I agree with you, especially the last paragraph. Nice parallel, thanks.

Nice observation. I hadn't thought about how similar the two rivalries were but now that you mention it, I can see it too. All tennis fans were cheated not being able see them (Stef & Mon) compete against one another more often. All of their matches had this special feeling to them, you can feel that each match was significant and they both always gave it their all.

Justine and Serena have a similar type feeling to a lesser degree. I think their last match was a bit of a let down and it took some of the excitemnent away. Serena's half-hearted effort was a bit of a disapointment, but that outcome may turn out to be what Serena needed to avoid any future let downs in big tournaments- something we as fans haven't seen from her in the slams. If their QF match happens I think it will respark the fire in the rivalry. Although I think Serena will pull away with the win, I don't see Justine going down without a fight (like Serena at RG). I actually think Justine's more motivated to beat her here than she was in Paris. On the other hand, Justine will not be playing the Serena that showed up at 'the French'. A motivated Serena is a winning Serena!

With regards to the rivalry it would probably add more excitement if Justine is able to defeat Serena on another surface, especially at Wimbledon. Justine getting so close at Miami made things a lot more interesting than I could have imagined. Let me be clear though, I'm not as interested in their rivalry as I am with Serena, in other words, I don't need close matches or Justine ever winning for me to love their rivalry.

Oh but if you switched Serena's name with Justine you would be talking a whole lot differently.

Neah ...she's not born in Serbia....

That's not going to stop someone from getting stabbed, just because they weren't born in Serbia.

^^what a stupid thing to say:o

I think these are good observations, except that Monica had complete domination of the game, completely replacing Steffi at the top. I don't think Justine has achieved that.

Yeah and we wish people would stop telling lies in their signature but what can you do.
