we all know about the justine - serena quarters rematch. but there're several other likely match-ups that could be very interesting.

for instance:

1st round:

bartoli - flavia: i'll go with bartoli but she did not impress me today against justine.

aravane - perry: aravane

yaroslava - mirza: this is so unfair to be in the 1st round! i'll go with yari.

nadia - king: nadia just injured her back again. still, i'll go with her.

kuznetsova - vakulenko: kuznetosva but i'll keep an eye out for an upset.

elena - dechy: i'm picking dechy with the upset.

2nd round:

nadia - yari: nadia

tatiana - tamira: tantalizing. i'll go with tatiana.

3rd round:

lucie - jelena: incredible early encounter. i'll pick lucie to finally show her true colours and pull off the upset.

bammer - hingis: bammer

safina - v. williams: safina

4th round:

tatiana - kuznetsova: tatiana

here are my picks for the quarters onward:

quarters:

justine - s. williams; lucie - anna; nicole - ana; masha - tatiana.

semis:

justine - anna; masha - nicole.

final:

masha - justine.

as for the champion, all i can say is, i still haven't given up on masha.

pwayne and the rest, i'd love to get your thoughts.

Rgarros,
This is a very interesting draw indeed but I will give you my thoughts in this thread later today. Got to analyze the draw and come up with my contenders and floaters list.
But, I will say this - Jankovic has the toughest quarter while Sharapova and Mauresmo have decent quarters to navigate through.

pwayne, agree with you but i think the easiest quarter belongs to nicole and ana. they don't face anybody until they meet in the quarters.

The most exciting fourth round matchup is hands down Venus vs. Maria

I disagree with the predictions though. I want a Serena vs. Venus final. But I think we'll be seeing a Serena vs. Ivanovic/Mauresmo final.

trufanjay, it's exciting if it happens. i don't think venus will get there, though. safina's looking good and venus might still be injured.

Really? She's playing a tier 3 semi, where she hasn't had to play that well to get there. She is losing to Jankovic, hardly a grass court queen, and she went three sets against Pin on grass  and Krajicek. She isn't playing any better than Venus atm, and other than Charleston, she had a shitty clay season.

hey, i'm not a huge fan of safina either. i just think she has the edge right now, ironically, for some of the reasons that you mentioned. by the way, what's the latest on venus's injury?

Methinks it will be Justine/Serena vs. Maria/Amelie/Venus. Really not sure which though, but these have to be the five main contenders.

i think nicole takes out mauresmo.

So a three final WImbledon Champ, five-time finalist, doesn't have the edge when they are playing at the same level atm? That doesn't make sense to me.

Venus' injury is fine methinks. She wouldn't have signed up for doubles if her knee was still killing her. I think that the sliding brought that stress on the knee. The grass will be fine on the knee.

1r: Sharapova v Chan . Really interesting 1r match...

1r: Golovin v Hsieh . Su-Wei, a player to watch...

1r: Garbin v Yan . I think Zi will win this one

1r: V.Williams v Kudryavtseva

2r: V.Williams v S.Peng . Tough first rounds for Venus... I think Alla and especially Shuai, can pull off the upset...

I think Kudryavtseva vs Venus will be a good match ;) I wouldn't be totally surprised if Alla defeated Venus, it just depends how Venus is playing on the day.

Also maybe an upset with Morita vs Santangelo

With Alla's forehand and serve, Venus should beat her in straights. And Peng hasn't done anything lately.

lol Adam if Kudryavsteva couldn't beat Sharapova on clay when Maria wasn't playing that well, she has little chance to beat Venus on grass :p

Pironkova - Radwanska should be another good 1st round matches, it was one of the best matches at Wimbledon last year

The best R3 possible match-up i think is Vaidisova - Azarenka  :bigbabetennis: :ballbashing: :grunting:

Dementieva - Paszek maybe

Venus - Sharapova  I wan't Vee to win that so bad

Trufanjay,
You are correct on that assessment with the winner having a good chance to represent the bottom half of the draw.

Final contenders - Top Half - Jankovic,Henin, Serena
Final contenders - Bottom Half - Sharapova,Venus,Mauresmo,Ivanovic, Vaidisova

First rounds :

1. Kuznetsova vs Vakulenko.
2. Bartoli vs Pennetta.
3. Cornet vs Kirilenko.
4. Hingis vs Cavaday.
5. Hantuchova vs Pavlyuchenkova.

I don't think Chan or Hsieh will trouble Sharapova and Golovin, they are too limited.

Also maybe an upset with Morita vs Santangelo

Yes, Morita has a good chance against Santangelo from what I've seen. It will certainly be very competitive match that one.

I hope Kirilenko can make it to the third round to maybe go against Sharapova.

Hantuchova vs Pavlyuchenkova could be interesting and maybe we'll see an upset with Kuznetsova vs Vakulenko. :D

One thing that i notice in this thread, is that you guys are all underestimating Venus again. Be careful. Im sure you don't want another 2005...:tape:

interesting, although I definitly have to disagree with the Safarova over Jankovic match. I just think that Jelena is playing much better and has more confidence than Lucie.

you guys have mentioned pavlyuchenkova's name twice. i thought i knew all the players in the wta but i guess was wrong. who is she?

by the way, someone posted that dementieva - paszek could be a good one but i don't think it'll happen. i don't think elena gets past dechy and i think tatiana will take out tamira in a tough one.

go tatiana! i just hope she's fully okay from her injury.

Rgarros,
I just did my bracket and I got Dechy, only beating Elena, but facing Sveta in the 4th round. Also, I have Paszek beating Tati. Tati lack of playing since the clay season in America will come back to haunt her.
