View Full Version : Hingis vs. Cavaday...anyone else feel like this is asking for trouble for Martina?

Talented British player in front of a completely vocal crowd against a player who hasn't played a match when she was healthy since March...and very well might be injured still. Under normal circumstances, Naomi would get killed. If Martina isn't 100% though, I'm sensing an upset.

It's not as though Hingis hasn't been upset early at Wimbledon before..

Right, but this is a good British player ;) She lost to Sugiyama 4-6 5-7 last year and won a round at Birmingham this year. She's definitely not afraid of the pressure or the circumstances.

I obviously don't expect Naomi to win if it's her best vs. Martina's best...but Martina hasn't been at her best for a while and she still might be injured. Not to mention it's her first match in a while on her worst surface.

Hopefully Hingis is rested, fully healed and focussed.

If she is, routine win for her.

If Hingis is struggling with injury she might have a tougher match that expected. Wouldn't say an upset is on, but a tough match for sure.

Doubt it. But I think Hingis might lose to Bammer in 3R.

Two easy sets.

If it's on Court 2 she'll lose in 2, if it's on another court she'll save a couple of match points and win in 3.

Martina in two shorts sets, needs to settle in the first, might be something like 6-4. then 6-2 in the second.

"British wild card" and "trouble" shouldn't generally be used in the same sentence.

hingis isn't completely fit yet, her doctor said.
she may even pull out over the weekends.

so i do not think it would be major upsets for hingis to lose this match, cause as her doctor said she only started playing tennis last friday.

Anyone who hits a decent ball, who has a good serve, some power and speed can take out Hingis. If this girl has these qualities then yes, she could make some noise. I don't expect to see Hingis in the second week

Hingis will be eager to play again. That should get her to the 3rd round.
If she is inspired and if she has gathered some confidence over the break, she may even get to see Jelena in the QF.
But if she would be passive and uninspired. Sybille will play her to submission.

Hingis court savvy will win this one in 2 easy sets (2 and 1). Cavaday will be nervous facing a great champion

If you have an hip issue, grass is probably the most forgiving surface in that respect.

Martina has the best draw she can ask for.
She crushed Bam Bam earlier this year.

She beat Chakvetadze last year at Montreal.

If she's going to beat Jankovic it will be on grass. This is a surface she can outwit Jelena on.
She really has a good shot to make the semis, I doubt she'll waste it on losing to Cavaday.

Most of those qualities sum up Naomi. Minus the speed thing but shes been working on it.

If you haven't see Naomi play yet you may be suprised shes a player on the up and this may be the kind of match she needs to set her career up cos if she wins this i see her getting to the 3rd round and could trouble Bammer.

If Martina is in decent form she should win but Naomi will make this match interesting. I hope the schedlers have the sense to put this on court 2 then we all know what will happen.

I am always amazed that people think grass is Martina's worst surface. She won the whole damn thing in '97 and got to the semi-finals in '98 and the quarter finals in 2000. She won the doubles titles in '96 and '98. She had back problems as I remember in 2001 and didn't play again until last year.

Her participation this year is iffy due to her injury and long lay off, but it is not a bad surface for her. She ain't bad, you know, at coming to the net.

oh really?? what does that say about womens tennis if martina managed to win 3 slams and nearly the grand slam in the same year then...if thats all thats necessary to beat hingis  hingis is one of the very few active players who have won the wimbeldon singles, so im sure she knows more than most players about how to play grass court tennis and there isnt that many out there who can hit a VOLLEY these days!!!! if martina is adventurous and comes to the net sometimes, she can still be a threat on grass

I back wannabe's sentiments exactly...Martina isnt the same player of old but she's still got something otherwise she'd have stayed at home. I think her draw is great, well, apart from the obvious party pooper later on...

Martina could have been out with injury for a year and she'd still beat Cavaday. She won a round by beating Bardina who anyone can beat these days, then was thrashed by Bartoli. Sorry I dont see any trouble here.

I agree very much, she has a great chance at SF which would boost her confidence and then the rest of the year is hers to try to win more titles.

Oh nevermind, that poster is one of those people who do not understand Martina's kind of game, you don't need just that to beat Martina, you need all that going for you to beat her, like what all the commentators say during her matches, to defeat Martina in her normal game, you need excellent tennis.

I guess wont be a trouble.. after first round I dont know.. Martina will do everything to not be bumped out the tourney.. but she is not fit.. thats a fact.. so.. after use the energy reserves she gets and having resisted the pain.. the second round will demand a fit player.. dont care who will be the oponent the recovery will be tough..

people dont realise that martina has the tools to take apart players. no one other than justine IMO has the variety and smarts to kind of force players in to making errors and looking "lost" out there like martina used to do in her prime, and will do again if she finds some form here.. she isnt a player that should be discounted against anyone, on any surface..she understands tennis better than 99% of the tour

Typical answer from a McDonald's tennis style lover... Ball bashing and pace only don't defeat a focussed Hingis, you must have much more under your belt to take Hingis off.

Ah the knowledge of some here always will impress me... NOT !

Not really. Even a healthy Hingis was never a sure bet to get past the quarters at wimbledon. If and Hingis makes it to Jelena, Jelena is a far superior athlete and that alone would give her the edge.

Not to mention, grass is a surface where Jelena can outhit Martina. And there should be no doubt as to who's the more in-form player. That said, neither player would serve the other off the court.

Well, I know what you are saying but Martina has only been out for about 2 months so her match fitness shouldn't be that bad. I don't see her tiring until the 4th rd at least, depending on the schedule of course.
