Wimbledon 2007 Women's Preview

Justine Henin (BEL)
Current Rank: #1
2006 Wimbledon: Finalist

Nick’s Take: Justine should be considered a threat to win on any surface on the Tour. Her game is suited for grass because of her movement. She can hit any shots and loves to attack, finalizing the point with a crisp volley. Some of the experts say she cannot adjust from clay to grass, but I do not agree with his. I feel Justine will be in playing well into the second week.

Prediction: With her personal life finally having stability, Justine will be in the semifinals or finals.

Maria Sharapova (RUS)
Current Rank: #2
2006 Wimbledon: Semifinals

Nick’s Take: Maria has had an up and down year, including two devastating losses to Serena and another downer at the French Open. She lost to Serena in the finals of the Australian Open 6-1, 6-2, lost to Serena in the fourth of the Sony Ericsson Open 6-1, 6-1, and lost to Ana Ivanovic in the semifinals of the French Open 6-2, 6-1. Maria must have her serve in working order and needs to establish a very sound foundation which will enable her to pound her flat forehand and backhands.

Prediction: Her dad must settle down and be very positive when sitting in the coach’s box, because it would be devastating to not have Maria playing in the second week. I think she makes it to the semifinals.

Jelena Jankovic (SRB)
Current Rank: #3
2006 Wimbledon: Fourth round

Nick’s Take: Jelena is the talk of the WTA Tour right now. No one has ever doubted her athletic ability and fantastic groundstrokes, but her mental stability has also been a question mark. Her record clearly shows she is someone who cannot be pushed around any longer. She can play on any surface and the other players on tour respect her as a player capable of winning a major.

Prediction: I will go the distance with Jelena and predict she will reach the semifinals, and if the draw shakes out right she could reach the finals.

Amelie Mauresmo (FRA)
Current Rank: #4
2006 Wimbledon: Champion

Nick’s Take: Amelie is talented in so many ways. She has touch, can hit the ball, is a superb volleyer, and is physically fit. She did not have a good showing at the French Open (lost in the third round), but last years win at Wimbledon gives her an edge to be around well into the second week.

Prediction: Amelie cannot have any doubts about her game. She must visualize last year’s trophy presentation and believe she can do it again. I think she will make it into the semifinals.

Svetlana Kuznetsova (RUS)
Current Rank: #5
2006 Wimbledon: Third round

Nick’s Take: Svetlana can play with any player on tour. The key to her success is definitely a very stable foundation, which gives her control when hitting out from her forehand and backhand sides. She hits the ball on the rise, which puts her opponents in a defensive mode a majority of the time.

Prediction: She must not make a big thing out of changing from clay to grass. Keep in mind how big of a factor the mental approach is to making adjustments. She will make it into the second week.

Serena Williams (USA)
Current Rank: #7
2006 Wimbledon: Did not play

Nick’s Take: Serena did not play last year and she did not do well in 2005 when she lost in the third round. She can do it all. She has a big serve, an aggressive return of serve, she moves well, and above all she believes she can win.

Prediction: 2007 Wimbledon Champion

Other dangerous players:

Ana Ivanovic (SRB)
Current Rank: #6
2006 Wimbledon: Fourth round

Nick’s Take: Ivanovic is coming off a finals appearance at the French Open and has suddenly become one of the top players on Tour. She is ranked #6 which is a career high, but will only be playing in her third Wimbledon. She hits the ball as hard as anyone on Tour, but her inconsistency has kept her from winning the big one.

Prediction: She can definitely make some noise in the second week.

Nicole Vaidisova (CZE)
Current Rank: #14
2006 Wimbledon: Fourth round

Nick’s Take: Nicole definitely has the serve, aggressive groundstrokes, and ability to make her a threat to win any tournament. Grass, at times, can test your ability to make sudden movement as well as making it difficult to recover. She is 6’1” and is still growing which at times can be a negative on the clay and grass.

Prediction: Nicole must have a huge serving fortnight, and cut down on unforced errors. It sure would help if she tried a few drop shots!

Venus Williams (USA)
Current Rank: #31
2006 Wimbledon: Third round

Nick’s Take: Venus has not had a spectacular year, and lacks match play due to her wrist injury. I have definite visions that Venus will apply her athletic ability and include many trips to the net. If she is playing her best: Top Seeds Watch Out!

Prediction: If healthy she can go well into the second week.

Dark Horses:

Anna Chakvetadze (RUS)
Current Rank: #8
2006 Wimbledon: Third round

Nick's Take: This will only be the third Wimbledon for the 20-year old Russian. She has a knack for reaching the late rounds of tournaments, but she has yet to translate that into a big win. She lost to Henin at last year’s Wimbledon, and has lost to Sharapova at the quarterfinals of both the Australian and French Open’s this year. The only grass court tournament she played in before Wimbledon was at ‘s-Hertogenbosch.

Daniela Hantuchova (SVK)
Current Rank: #10
2006 Wimbledon: Fourth round

Nick's Take: Hantuchova proved to everyone that she could win the big tournament when she won at Indian Wells earlier this year. Since then her results have been a bit up and down. She did reach the quarters at Wimbledon in 2002, but has yet to match those results. The draw will have a big impact on how far she can go this year.

Na Li (CHN)
Current Rank: #18
2006 Wimbledon: Quarterfinals

Nick’s Take: Li reached the quarters last year in a very impressive run where she defeated Kuznetsova and Vaidisova in back-to-back rounds. She has struggled this year, but she did reach the quarters at Birmingham on grass. Her results heading into Wimbledon 2006 where not great either, so she is capable of getting hot and putting a few wins together

Wow, 5 semifinalists. That should be interesting Nick. He didn't even predict the Finalist. Those were an absolute sham. Went with Serena, obvious choice, for Champion and then picked that the top four seeds would make the Semis. Wow, out on a limb!

Don't say that because every player have a chance to play bad.
