Several of the possible 3R opponents are playing well and no way is Nicole gonna beat a top 4 seed if she plays one in the 4R. So we should expect a 3R or 4R loss I guess.

But Nicole has 15% chance to beat Amélie. Amélie is like the winner of last Wimbledon , and she plays so great in grass now. I'm sure she will be in the final of eastbourn today.
Anyway, Nicole will be able to defend her 4round.

I feel like Nicole got a very good draw to atleast get to the 4th round. Mauresmo has been injured so I guess it is as good as it can get.

Im pretty sure Azarenka does not like grass that much, and Kostanic I think does not like it either, so Nicole might play Zi Yan in the 3rd round (I dont know if shes any good on grass though).

Nicole's draw is pretty good. Azarenka could be an issue, but I think Nicole should at least make it to the Round of 16. Amelie in that round would be extremely tough since Amelie plays so well on grass, but Nicole having a great chance to at least defend her points from last year is a good thing.

Match report from the Wimbledon site:

Vaidisova Into Second Round

Wednesday, 27 June, 2007

Fast-rising Czech teenager Nicole Vaidisova needed to battle at times to see off the challenge of world number 65 Karin Knapp and book a second round spot in straight sets.

Quite how Vaidisova – the 14th seed who already has two Slam semi-finals to her name - managed to make such a meal of the first set against an unheralded opponent making her Wimbledon debut takes some understanding.

Early in today’s match, the 18-year-old Czech six-footer was playing with a breezy style which suggested that victory would be embarrassingly simple. Knapp made a forehand error to give an early break for 1-2 and at that point Vaidisova was not only out-thinking and out-playing her opponent, but she was making it look very straightforward as she strolled about the court, coming into the net with ease.

Knapp, meanwhile, was developing a worrying habit of reaching 40-0 on her serve and then wobbling, lending her a permanent air of competitive vulnerability.

Worse, she appeared to be labouring physically, in marked contrast to Vaidisova’s blithe demeanour. But somewhere along the way, Vaidisova became a little too blithe; she did not repeat the break when she might have, and then quite unexpectedly Knapp levelled for 4-4.

Perhaps matters were progressing too easily for Vaidisova, and at such a leisurely pace that her mind wandered elsewhere.

Knapp managed to break her wobbly service habit and instead held to love, thus leaving Vaidisova serving to save the set – a scenario which a few minutes earlier would have seemed faintly ridiculous.

Fortunately the Czech thought so too, and roused herself to hold. With the match balanced at 5-5 and deuce, a 40-minute rain break put the match on pause, and by the time they returned Vaidisova seemed to have forgotten that every time she came to the net she was highly likely to win the point.

As Vaidisova hung back, the result was that Knapp even reached set point. Some powerful work from her favourite baseline location saved the day for Vaidisova, but in the breaker Knapp had her running from one side to the court to the other.

When the Czech dumped a forehand into the net for 4-5 she slammed her racket twice onto the blameless lawns beneath her feet, shrieking her frustration. It seemed to do the trick, and from there she took the tie-break and the set.

Vaidisova has been heralded as the Next Big Thing for some time now. Of course there were inevitable comparisons with Maria Sharapova for their similar looks, along with their shared years at the Nick Bollettieri Academy in Florida.

But for all Sharapova’s achievements, she is not among the elite group of six names in the women’s game who can say they won five Tour titles before their 17th birthday. But Vaidisova is, and one look at the other names on the list – Austin, Jaeger, Capriati, Seles, Hingis - is indicative of the huge expectations that feat prompted.

In the second set Vaidisova began looking rather more like the player she is supposed to be, aided by Knapp’s inability to convert an early break point.

This time Vaidisova did not make the mistake of strolling, and instead pressed home her advantage to wrap up the match 7-6, 6-2.

On her two appearances at Wimbledon before today she made the third round at age 16 and the fourth round last year, so she likes this surface. Her two Slam semi-finals to date have come in France last year and Australia this, and it will be intriguing to see what she can achieve here.

INTERVIEW-Vaidisova takes to grass despite misgivings

By Paul Majendie

LONDON, June 27 (Reuters) - Czech teenager Nicole Vaidisova is no great fan of grass and the hard courts of the U.S. Open are where she prefers to play. She had no complaints at Wimbledon on Wednesday, however, when she finally got on court for her rain-delayed first round match which she duly won 7-6 6-2 against Italian Karin Knapp.

"I won -- that is the most important thing. The first match is always kind of tricky. The player always comes out with nothing to lose," the world number 10 told Reuters after dismissing an opponent ranked 55 places below her.

Asked how she enjoyed playing on grass, the 18-year-old from Prague had no doubts.

"I am not a fan of it. But I like the challenge, I like something different. It is a question of just getting used to it," she said.

Vaidisova, already the holder of six titles, has been a semi-finalist at the Australian and French Opens and also reached the fourth round at Wimbledon last year.

Asked which of the big tournaments she preferred, she said "The U.S. Open -- that is my favourite grand slam."

Vaidisova, who has already amassed more than $1.7 million dollars in prize money, has been enjoying a golden patch of form in 2007.

She reached back-to-back semi-finals in Sydney and at the Australian Open before reaching the quarter-finals of the French Open in Paris.

In her opening match of Wimbledon 2007, she raced to a 4-2 lead in the first set but then let the Italian, who was making her Wimbledon debut, climb back to contest a tiebreak.

The young Czech, who had to adapt quickly to the swirling wind, boasts a strong serve and a solid all-round game.

"I don't think my serve helped me out as much in the first set. But there were some key shots I had in the tiebreak that won it," she said.

After allowing the Italian briefly to pull level, she was firmly back in control in the second set to coast to what in the end was an easy victory.

Vaidisova Wins Teenage Tussle

Monday, 2 July, 2007

Nicole Vaidisova won the tussle of the talented teenagers, with the 18-year-old Czech brushing aside Victoria Azarenka in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.

The first set started with the 17-year-old from Belarus looking a little outclassed. Vaidisova, the 14th seed, began well, powering her groundstrokes across the net. Her strong forehand helped her take a seemingly unassailable 4-0 lead.

Azarenka was regularly being wrongfooted but, once she won her first game, she began to offer spectators glimpses of the searing backhand she favours. Despite her youth, she has been showing great talent for a few years. As a junior, she won a clutch of singles and doubles titles in the 2004 and 2005 seasons, and shot straight into the top 100 rankings last year, during her first full year on tour.

As she worked to achieve her first break back, to 2-4, with just her second approach to the net, Azarenka suddenly found focus. Vaidisova started finding the net a little too often. And with a fine overhead winner by Azarenka, the match moved from the pedestrian to the passionate.

But the unhurried 6ft (183cm) Vaidisova immediately raised her game, bringing out the biggest gun in her arsenal – her serve. She won the game to love, with her first ace of the match.

Azarenka, who by now had the sprightlier bounce in her step, was mixing up her game a little more. She made a few approaches to the net but couldn’t break the Vaidisova serve a second time to draw level. Vaidisova closed out the set with another ace, this time down the line, followed neatly by an unreturnable serve.

The second set started with another early break of serve by Vaidisova. It seems improbable, but at 18, the Czech is already something of a regular on the circuit. In three years, this is already her 12th grand slam tournament. So far this year she has reached the semi-finals in Australia and the quarter-finals in France.

With Vaidisova leading 3-2, and about to serve, rain stopped play. When the match resumed, Vaidisova wasted no time. She wrapped up the match without letting her opponent win a game.

Vaidisova has equalled her best Wimbledon performance of last year by reaching the fourth round. She will play fourth seed Amélie Mauresmo.

QUOTES

after win over Azarenka:

It wasn't easy to start again because we couldn't warm up. But I think I controlled whole match.

about match vs. Mauresmo

Of course, she's favourite I have to admit it. She loves grass and she plays really well on grass.. I don't have grass as my favourite surface. But I won't go on court with feeling that I haven't any chance.

I really enjoy this match.. people play tennis because of these matches. I won't go on court to train or try and wait how it will gone. I know I can beat her.

N. Vaidisova - 3 June
Tuesday, 3 July, 2007

Nicole Vaidisova (CZE)[14] beat Amelie Mauresmo (FRA)[4] 7-6, 4-6, 6-1

Q. This is your third appearance in Wimbledon. In 2005 you reached the third round; 2006, you reached the fourth round. Where do you see yourself in this championship, having now defeated the champion?

NICOLE VAIDISOVA: No, it was definitely a great win today. I feel really good about my game. Coming in especially, you know, like I said, I'm not a huge fan of grass, a little challenge for me.

I've been improving every match. Just very excited and looking forward to the next one. So not really thinking of rounds further and further ahead.

Q. Not semifinal or final?

NICOLE VAIDISOVA: No. I'm in the quarterfinals right now and that's, you know, what I'm thinking about, so...

Q. What were the keys for you to be able to beat a defending champion? I know you've beaten her a couple time before, but it's different circumstances here.

NICOLE VAIDISOVA: Definitely. I mean, this is a surface that definitely suits her a lot, and I knew if I wanted to win I had to, you know, kind of get on the same level and play as good as she does on it.

So I just came out there, you know, hitting and fighting for every point. In the end it worked out for me.

Q. How much of a mental battle is it to play someone like her? First set was tough. The second was tough. Third set it seemed like you were locked in there.

NICOLE VAIDISOVA: Of course, the first set, she had three set points in the first set. You know, I just kept there trying to stay positive, fight for every point.

You know, in the second set I kind of, you know, I think lost a couple games just because I wasn't as concentrated.

You know, we came out the third set, I just wanted to win. I did everything I could to win.

Q. What was it like off and on, off and on, with all the rain delays?

NICOLE VAIDISOVA: Yeah, I mean, it was kind of tiring. You know, you walk all those stairs up, the locker room in back. It's pretty much a long walk. So that really gets you tired.

But, you know, you have to get used to it. You know, you sit there, you wait, you talk to your dad or someone for a second. You go on again, you know.

Q. Could you describe the physical sensation of playing on grass. Doesn't happen very often, but...

NICOLE VAIDISOVA: It's different. Of course it's different. It's like you step on the court. You're thinking, wait a minute, this is not a surface.

But then it's like, I like it now. Of course I like it now. After a couple matches in, you know, you get used to the fact that the ball bounces slower and differently.

It's fun to, you know, challenge yourself with the surface once in a while. We just play one, two tournaments on it a year, so make the most of it.

Q. In the third set she seemed to almost give up, give away quite a few points to you. Were you surprised how easy it was to win that third set?

NICOLE VAIDISOVA: Well, I mean, after the first two sets, of course, you go out there thinking, Okay, this is going to be another tough battle.

But I started off very well after, you know, she won the second, and I just took the lead right away. So I just kept focused, not thinking if she's playing less or if she's making maybe too many errors.

I tried really just to focus on my game, what I'm doing.

Q. Do you remember the point of your career when you started sharing the court with players like Mauresmo, not feeling intimidated against players that won Grand Slams or achieved a lot in their careers?

NICOLE VAIDISOVA: I have a tremendous amount of respect for Amélie. She won here last year, she won, of course the Australian Open. I still have huge respect for her. But on the court when you play, you try to win. You don't think about who's standing on the other side.

I'm definitely happy I'm able to win those matches. Because, of course, when you start on, it's more about just being able to play with those players. But those are facts now that I'm able to beat them. So that's a good thing.

Q. Was there a moment or particular match where you felt like you really discovered that belief against these type of players?

NICOLE VAIDISOVA: I mean, for sure, it helps French Open last year when I got to the semis, beat great players on the way, Amélie one of them. It definitely gives you confidence.

Q. How nervous were you getting as it came to the finishing line?

NICOLE VAIDISOVA: I mean, I was nervous in a lot of ways because, of course, on one side you want to win, you're really nervous about that. Then it started raining a little bit. So, of course, you kind of want to get it done. You want to play.

Yeah, of course a little nervous. But, you know, more excited.

Q. What is your favorite surface?

NICOLE VAIDISOVA: I like hard and clay probably the same. I like hard, but I grew up on clay, had some great results on clay. Kind of both I think on the same level.

Q. You're starting to develop a love for grass?

NICOLE VAIDISOVA: Of course, I'm not going to be leaving this year's Wimbledon thinking this is not for me. I definitely got used to it a little better as I played more matches.

I played Eastbourne, which was great to get some matches in. Playing here. So I feel like I'm improving every match, which is a good thing.

Q. Do you feel like you're ready to win Wimbledon this year?

NICOLE VAIDISOVA: I have not asked myself those questions and I'm not about to. I really am taking it match by match. You know, we'll see how it goes next round.

I mean, it's in the quarterfinals now so every match is amazingly tough. So, you know, just try to win each one of them and see how it goes.

Q. When you say you have to get used to grass, what does that mean? Movement? Shot selection has to be different?

NICOLE VAIDISOVA: The rallies obviously are shorter here. For me, I'm tall, so getting low of course on the ball is a little challenge in moving around. You're kind of stuck, thinking I can't really move here because it's grass.

No, I think I've made the adjustment pretty well this year.

Q. You're a big hitter. Do you find your ball penetrates more? Do you like serving?

NICOLE VAIDISOVA: Serve can definitely help you here. You can't rely on the serve, but it's an advantage, for sure.

Q. Your forehand, do you think that's a big shot on grass?

NICOLE VAIDISOVA: I mean, of course you have to winning those matches, you have to have a great forehand, a great backhand. You can't really just have one shot, that being a serve. You don't win matches doing that.

Yeah, I feel comfortable about my forehand, as well.

Q. Do you think one of the keys of your win was the return of serve? She seemed to be worried, made a lot of double faults because she was afraid with her second serve. Do you think that was a key?

NICOLE VAIDISOVA: Yeah, I mean, in my head I knew if she hits a second serve I have to step in there and try to get it as fast as possible on the rise, kind of start the point off like that, aggressively.

I didn't want to play way too many rallies. That wasn't the way to beat her. So I think I did that well, yeah.

Q. Can you talk about your mental maturation since you reached the French Open semifinals last year, whether you feel like you've grown up and are more composed on court?

NICOLE VAIDISOVA: Every one of those big matches gives you confidence, gives you more experience for the next match. It's tough playing a girl like this who's 25, 26, who has those extra eight years on you of experience in matches.

So I'm trying to take every one of them and use them for next round. I definitely think I'm able to handle situations a little better now than I did last year or two years ago.

Q. Who were your role models when you were growing up? Do you remember watching Wimbledon as a kid?

NICOLE VAIDISOVA: Not really. I never really grew up watching tennis on TV as much. My role model was probably Steffi Graf. I was born in Germany, so she was a huge role model there. I loved the way she played.

Q. Were you able to meet her?

NICOLE VAIDISOVA: No. Unfortunately, I never met her.

Q. Can you talk about Ivanovic or Petrova?

NICOLE VAIDISOVA: Well, I don't know who won. I've played Ana a couple times. I played Nadia a couple times. I never played them on this surface. It will be different. Both are similar. Big serving girls. Both of them hard shots. A little different than today. Yeah, I'll try to match that up, get ready to the ball coming fast, we'll see.

More winners than unforced errors is a good thing.
Looking at the stats, it seems that Nicole was doing well pressuring Amelie's second serve and she was pretty solid at the net. I'm hoping to see some highlights of this match sometime today.

Shame I couldn't watch it. Seems like Mauresmo couldn't hold her nerves and Nicole took advantage of it. She is better and better with every match on grass it seems, although Mauresmo wasn't at her best. Keep going girl. :yeah:

By making the QF here Nicole has at least reached the quarters in 7 of 9 tournaments played this year:

Sydney, Australian Open, Miami, Indian Wells, Roland Garros, Eastbourne, Wimbledon

Been a pretty consistent year so far - especially at the slams which is nice to see.

Very happy to see Nicole through, even though she made things much harder than they needed to be in the 1st set. She kept her composure throughout the match, which was nice to see, and even showed some nice touch at the net from time to time.

The 3rd set was more a matter of Mauresmo beating herself than anything else. The last 2 games were absolutely pathetic, especially from a defending champ. I didn't expect Chokomomo to be back in such a dramatic way. :help: But regardless of how poorly Amélie was playing, Nicole still had to take advantage of the situation, and she did it brillantly. Well done! :D :hatoff:

I like Ana and I think that Mauresmo's games in grass is way better than Ana's and if Nicole beat Momo I think she has a pretty good chance to be in the semis of a GS again!!!:bounce: .

The only good thing for me about having two of my favorites playing aginst ecah other is that one of them its going to be in the semis....
