I still can't believe it. This match was totally in Nicole's hands but she just couldn't deliver. Victory could have helped her to ensure top 10 spot, but now she has to play well in the US, with points from Stanford and San Diego to defend. :( I am gutted right now, very disappointing end of the match.

I can't understand how she lost. This is the worst loss of her season so far.She wasn't mentally tough as Ana was during the match points. This is disappointing

No more bad words about Ana. :o

It was quite obvious that the tension and nerves got to Nicole.

This one will hurt. :(

She's not mentally tough enough yet.

Hey guys, maybe I shouldn't post in here but I am myself a supporter of Nicole too, so I think I have some rights. ;) I was ready to accept the loss, because Nicole played breathtaking tennis at times (especially in the 1st set), and although Ana is my ultimate fave, I wouldn't have minded had Nicole won and I'd cheer for her to get to her 1st major final, where she's bound to be sooner than later. As I said to Derek I hope Nicole doesn't get down on herself after this loss. She should be disappointed, but it should motivate her more than destroy. There's this saying what doesn't destroy you will make you stronger.

Chin up guys, all fans suffer bad losses. She'll be back for sure! Go Nicole!i hate that cow more and more :(

Poor Nicole, she had her matchpoints :sad:I fail to understand, what makes you hate Ana so much. Talk about sour grapes.

Dexter, Nicole will be fine, she is not the type of person who would dwell on losses. She is mentally tough, although she still struggles to show it on court, but as I always say that's womens tennis. She'll be fine. I think she surpassed her own expectations with QF on her worst surface. No need to cry about todays loss.

thx for your nice words.. it really comforts me, I'm sure Ana and Nicole are future of WTA... but I really started today to not cheer for Ana, I'm impressed how her game looks.. it wasn't too great and she had really great luck today... net and good luck were on Ana's side, what a pity for Nicole :) I want to see both in USO final :)

I respect Ana too much but it's really like Serena, her screaming ;) but it doesn't matter now and it doesn't matter for Nicole... because she's always concentrated and focused on game... as she said after loss at AO against Serena: "it doesn't matter for me" :)

Ana Ivanovic (SRB)[6] beat Nicole Vaidisova (CZE)[14] 4-6, 6-2, 7-5

Q. You're a pretty emotional player on court, very likely emotional off the court, too. How are you going to put this nightmare behind you?

NICOLE VAIDISOVA: Well, obviously I'm very disappointed right now. There is nothing which you can think of it besides that right now.

But, you know, you'll sleep over it and try to forget about it.

Q. Will Fed Cup help?

NICOLE VAIDISOVA: No, I don't think so. I think by that time, when that comes around, I'll be fine. You know, two, three days, you're good.

Q. You served strongly in the first set. Towards the end, nerves presumably played quite a big part.

NICOLE VAIDISOVA: I think you get also tired. You serve three sets, of course nerves kick in as well. I don't think I served bad really until the end. I mean, last point, of course. I don't think my serve was a problem.

Q. Did you feel her getting stronger through the match? How did you feel she played?

NICOLE VAIDISOVA: Well, she's fighting. She's a great player obviously. She kept hanging on there.

I had my chances in the third set especially. I didn't use 'em. So that's what tennis is all about, you know, using your chances.

Q. Notwithstanding that terrible backhand volley near the end, you have a very high percentage of conversion of balls near the net, something like 90%. Can you be at the net more? Can you push yourself to the net more than you are?

NICOLE VAIDISOVA: I think eventually, yeah, it's something I'm working on always for Wimbledon, getting to the net. As of now, I think I'm happy with how much I'll go to the net, how much I'll use those chances. I'm happy with that.

Q. You and Ana are part of this younger generation making a breakthrough. You could be having games like that against each other for years to come. You have great potential, the two of you, to be successful.

NICOLE VAIDISOVA: Yeah, definitely. I think it's good also for people to see younger players coming up, see new faces, new stories, new people around. I think it's good that we're coming out having some great games.

Q. There's two younger players and two more experienced players in the semifinal. How do you see the matchups going there?

NICOLE VAIDISOVA: Since I'm out, I'm never following and I really don't care what's going to happen now. So I don't know.

Q. Do you think because of what happened today you need to start working on the mental side of things?

NICOLE VAIDISOVA: Definitely there's things I still could improve. Sure, I mean, I'm a very emotional player and person. I'll always be. But of course there's a limit up to it. Something you have to work on.

Q. Does that mean working with a sports psychologist more?

NICOLE VAIDISOVA: I don't think so.

Q. No?

NICOLE VAIDISOVA: No.

Q. How do you improve it, start to control those nerves?

NICOLE VAIDISOVA: I think also as you get older, I think you get better at that. But also I have my family and people around me who can help me with that.

Q. You're going deep into events, losing against people getting into semis and finals. Is it hard to look at the light at the end of the tunnel in this regard, or do you take anything encouraging away?

NICOLE VAIDISOVA: I think it's a good sign that you get as far to quarters, semis. Of course, it's a positive thing.

Of course, I'm disappointed right now. It's hard to see the positive things. But I think when I wake up tomorrow or Saturday I'll see how, you know, how great my run was here.

Q. Is this the toughest loss of your career?

NICOLE VAIDISOVA: No.

Q. What was?

NICOLE VAIDISOVA: I don't think I have that really incredibly tough loss. Of course I'm disappointed right now, but I'm not going to go and be all heartbroken about it. It's tennis. It's a sport.

Q. Do you think your emotions are a strength of your play or not?

NICOLE VAIDISOVA: I think it can go both ways. I think it can be my strength but it also can be my weakness.

Q. When you were at 40 15, 5 3 in the third set serving for the match, were you calm or a little anxious at that point?

NICOLE VAIDISOVA: Of course you get a little nervous; you're so close. But I think at that point she had a little luck. She served great. Everything kind of came together and decided it.

Yeah, I think there was a couple shots I could have made but, you know, didn't happen.

Of course, I lost this match myself. Definitely I could win it, I think I was better on court.

I'm just not able to think about other things... I was so close to reach semifinal and of course, I'm really disappointed that I didn't win it.

Okay, I was bummed to come home to see that she lost. I was really upset to see that she had matchpoints. In fact this is the first time I've been pretty upset with one of my favorites losses (outside of the losses of my ultimate favorite, Davenport) since Capriati lost in the semifinals of the 2004 US Open. In a lot of ways, as much as Nicole losing and losing after having control of the match, it proves to me that she really is a true favorite of mine, more so than I thought.

I hope that Nicole isn't too down about this. Ana is a good player, and Nicole should be proud of how far she went in the draw on her least favorite surface. I'm proud of her for that. She still has a lot of work to do in order to get to that next level, but I feel that she's made progress at Wimbledon. I'm hoping for her to up her game this summer on the hardcourts.

Well, the disappointement is over now, I'll try to see that loss in a positive way.

Nicole had a great run in Wimbledon this year.No one was expecting her to beat Mauresmo. She played well, moved well, had a decent game when she was coming to the net, she shown she can become a complete player.Still, there is a lot of things to work (Ue, mental for the big part).

I know (or We know) Nicole can do better and that's just a matter of time.

Now, the hardcourt season is coming :yeah:

Spiritof42
Jul 5th, 2007, 10:37 PM
In my view, the main difference between today's ending and the previous one is that Mauresmo handed the win to Nicole on a silver platter, while Ivanovic didn't. Mauresmo, who wasn't having a great day to start with, completely crumbled in the last few games. Today, just when it looked like Ivanovic was going to lie down without much of a fight, she saved a bunch of match points and started playing with more confidence, while Nicole almost immediately became tentative and unsure of herself. Although she was unlucky on a couple of points, it looked to me like she was hoping that Ivanovic would beat herself, which didn't happen. This is not the way to close out a match, especially on a big stage.

Still a lot of room for improvement on the mental side for our Nicole, then.

On a more positive note, the improvements to her grass court game over a very short period are quite noticeable. She was definitely playing a lot better this week than in Eastbourne, where she looked pretty clumsy even when she was winning. Her capacity to adapt quickly is encouraging.

If she can find a way to deal with the mental issues, I can see her becoming a contender for the Wimbledon title somewhere down the road.
