We'd like to welcome back Chanda Rubin, Patty Schnyder and Iva Majoli back to the top 25. Congrats as well to Anne Kremer as well. Anna Smashnova as #16. She'd be a GS seed under the old system. Too cool. Mucho improvemento this yearo.

And this week's 'What happened to YOU, girl?' award goes to ... Meghann Shaughnessy!!!! She's off form and in danger of falling out of the top 20. A good clay player, she had a disaster of a year on clay.

Amelie Mauresmo is back into the top ten.

Chanda only has 14 tournaments. Decent results to 17 would put her around Dementiva and Farina-Elia.

Lindsay won't get up to 17 tours til Toray Pan Pacific next year.

Ever since she defeated Venus at Bank of West 2001, she's been fading... I dunno--- maybe the Venus curse is real after all <evil grin>

Lindsay won't get to 17 tournaments if she plays every week til Pan Pacific. Remember, she has ZERO for the year.

well i guess its true... no one can stop the big three, & yes, the Williams' do dominate. i would say Monica has a chance for #3, i even gamble on her to take it after USO, but she has WAYYYY too much pts to defend after it while Jenny has less. the race to the year end top 3 is over.

Jelena Dokic has 31 tournaments ???????

Jelena seems to play a tournament just about every week. Even when she was slightly injured she still played. She should be a little more selective then maybe she will play better in the big tournaments.

I'm surprised Kim is still #5 since she lost early at both the French and Wimbledon. Didn't she lost a bunch of points because of that?

I want Panova out of the top 25; a person who loses to a 45 yr old that never played a professional singles match for nearly 8 yrs doesn't deserve a place in a top 25. Same goes for Daniela H.

Who are the "Big 3"? Williams, Williams, and Mauresmo?

Congratulations to Chanda. She's been playing so well and I expect to see her continue moving on up. Thanks for the posting, Volcana.

Ya and it was only Martina Navratilova on GRASS!!!!! She is in such good shape, and still has such great volleys that it is reasonable to say she would be in the top 20 grass courters in the world even NOW! Why should Dani not be in top 20? I mean she only won a tier 1, beat a top tenner four times this year, got to the quarters of a grand slam, I mean what else do you want? I think she should be top ten, not Jelena Dokic (that is ok because that will happen by the end of the year as Jelena has so many points to defend.

bcoene, since your question is still pending, here is the way it goes:

Rena - Vee
5348 - 4917 Current standings, just as Volcana presented them.
5742 - 4917 If Rena wins tomorrow.
5348 - 5261 If Venus wins.

Well, first of all congrats to Serena on getting to #1 with TWELVE tournaments.. AMAZINg.
Congrats to Chanda on getting back up amost to the top 20.

BIG CONGRATS to Amelie Mauresmo!!! she just had a great tournament and played such a fabulous match vs. Capriati. She looks VERY fit and very eager and aggresive. I hope she holds this form. She was a pleasure to watch.

And congrats to Justine for getting at least to the semis. Its tough to defend all those final points and she did a great job again at Wimby. For all her clay court prowess, she's quite a grass court player as well.

What, there are no challengers this week for Jelena to enter? Never mind the players, they should drug-test whoever's making her schedule. Whose record is she going after; Billie Jean's record for singles events played in a year, or Andrea Jaeger's record for how soon she can destroy her body. She's got a good 10-12 years of tennis ahead of her. She doesn't have to play them all now. Is she channeling Tomas Smid? She'll have to take a break sometime soon. The question is whether it's voluntary, and how long. I worry for her.

Chanda's on a nice little run. 4 straight tourneys in excess of 100 points will give one a nice boost. A top 16 seed at the US Open is a possibility. With so few tourneys though, a top 12 seed is unlikely unless she wins one, and has a couple of other good results.

It's nice to see some names who would be familiar to the casual fan (Iva, Chanda, Patty) returning to the mix. Expect Mary there soon. Anna will be there eventually. Whether she'll get there before the end of this year is 50/50, as she's still getting her game together. But I expect her back next year.
