View Full Version : Have there been any classic matches so far this year?

Jul 4th, 2002, 09:19 PM
And by this I mean a lot more winners than errors and both players playing well at the same time.

I can't remember one match so far.

well the Aus final was a classic - not neccessarily for the reasons mentioned above...

Maybe I should have re-phrased the topic line to 'quality';)

Berlin Final - Justine vs Serena

The Rome final wasn't as good, but it was real good.

I remember the 2nd set of the Capriati and Rita Grande match in the fourth round at the aus open was very interesting. Both players were so caught up in the match that they forgot to change ends in the tiebreaker. :)

Jen and Martina in Australia is memorable. Other than that, maybe Monica/Venus in Australia.

Jul 5th, 2002, 01:08 AM

Anna Vs Juju - US Open Final 2002. Thats a classic.

When it comes to classic matches, the men have such an advantage over the women! The talent disparity between the top 5 women and the rest is enormous. Not so with the men. Thus, the men generally play closer and more exciting matches. Especially in the grand slams.

Jenn/Martina Aussie Open Final...I think that is the best match this year (so far), but that's just my opinion.

Nothing involving Williams.

"apparently one just today that no one on the West Coast could even see, richard vs xavier"

You missed out  I saw the last set or so of this match, and both were playing as well as they could.

Richard unfortunately wasn't at the top of his game, since his whole body was about to give way any second

But there were more winners than errors f rom both men, if you beleive the stats.

Clarisa Fernandez vs Elena Dementieva 4th round FO.

Serena Williams vs Jennifer Capriati Final Scottdale

Chanda Rubin vs Barbara Schett 2nd round FO

Emmanuelle Gagliardi vs Anastasia Myskina 4th round Indian Wells

Venus Williams vs Kim Clijsters Hamburg final

Serena Williams vs Patty Schnyder Charleston semis

And a lot more:p

Jul 5th, 2002, 06:39 AM
Serena played Patty in Charleston quarters not semi's

Ms. Lively - They play lousy against each other and very rarely does anyone else give them a match. To have a match like the Venus-Steffi QF in 1999, you have to have a Steffi. Venus is better than she was in 1999, and Serena may be better than Venus. The Williamses are very accomodating about showing up for the finals. I've felt a great many of these finals were pretty good.

12 31 01 Gold Coast Williams d. Henin 7-5 6-2
01 07 02 adidas Hingis d. Shaughnessy 6-2 6-3 (SF INJ)
01 14 02 Australian Open Capriati d. Hingis 4-6 7-6 6-2 (QF)
02 04 02 Paris Williams d. Dokic walkover
02 11 02 Antwerp Williams d. Henin 6-3 5-7 6-3
02 18 02 Dubai Mauresmo d. Testud 6-4 7-6 (QF)
02 25 02 Scottsdale Williams d. Capriati 6-2 4-6 6-4
03 18 02 Miami Williams d. Capriati 7-5 7-6
04 08 02 Amelia Island Williams d. Henin 2-6 7-5 7-6
04 15 02 Charleston Majoli d. Schnyder 7-6 6-4 (QF)
04 29 02 Hamburg Clijsters d. Williams 1-6 6-3 6-4
05 06 02 Berlin Henin d. Williams 6-2 1-6 7-6
05 13 02 Rome Williams d. Henin 7-6 6-4
05 27 02 Roland Garros Williams d. Williams 7-5 6-3
06 24 02 Wimbledon Williams d. Williams

But my point is, if the Williams sisters are to play in 'classic' matches, their opponent must have proven themselves capable of beating them. Right now, there ain't no such animal.

3 matches that I will remember when that last ball of the 2002 season is over:

Venus Williams def. Amelie Mauresmo - Open Gaz de France Semis
Monica Seles def. Venus Williams - Australian Quarters
Jennifer Capriati def. Monica Seles - Nasdaq100 Semis

Jul 5th, 2002, 07:26 AM
...to add:
Unfortunately not many people got to see the Venus/Momo match in Paris since it was not on US television...but being there in person, as I was, it was incredible hitting by both. Venus won 4.6 7.6 7.5 (or something close to that). I know it was dang dang close and Mauresmo had chances to win it.

Venus Williams beats Hingis on clay. These two have the BEST rivalry and when Venus beats Hingis it is always exciting.:) As I am sure it is when the shoe is on the other foot.:)

Uh oh Dawn...don't talk about martina and shoes in the same sentence! :)

That one was very close! I was there, and it was so intense I was biting my nails and squirming in my chair awaiting the outcome! :)
