World No. 2 Maria Sharapova returns to the grass courts of the Edgbaston Priory Club next week to contest the DFS Classic from June 9-17.

Twice the champion in Birmingham, Sharapova accepted a main draw wildcard into the event fresh from contesting the French Open in Paris.

While enjoying a successful year on the tour in 2007 – she reached the final of the Australian Open in January and semi-finals in Tokyo, Istanbul and Paris – Sharapova’s season has been somewhat hampered by injury, inparticular a right shoulder problem suffered in Charleston in April.

Nevertheless, the popular Siberian-born star once voted one of People Magazine’s ‘50 Most Beautiful People’, has managed to maintain her world No.2 ranking.

The DFS Classic will be played at the Edgbaston Priory Club from June 9-17 2007, with tickets currently on sale through the box office on 0870 909 3015.

This year’s qualifying event will run between Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th June 2007 with the main draw played between 11th and 17th June.

:yeah: :D

Masha has a pretty good early draw. I think that she has a pretty chance of winning it. In fact i think that anything less than a title is unsatisfying. So good luck Masha in Birmingham. Go bring home that first title of `07. :rocker:

She has a pretty good draw, Jankovic will be very tough but Masha has the draw that can play her into form and confidence and hopefully by the end of the week she should be playing some great grass court tennis.

Looks like a pretty good draw for Birmingham, can't be too often they've had 2 top ten players. Pascek could be an early test, she looks very promising and Jankovic should be a big test if they both make it.

Hard to know what to expect from her atm with the shoulder and all...

I think she`ll either wear the white version of the outfit she wore at RG or another white outfit Nike had made for her. Regardless of which outfit she`s going to wear, Maria will look great in it.

Dude now it's official....
I'm hating Jankovic!!
The girl thinks that now she is "the" one
after been beating up by Juju, and look that wasn't like Maria that played nothing
she actually played great, but she just has a week mental side and Juju was a way better
now she's saying:

"I've shown I can beat every player in the world except Henin," the second-seeded Serb said. "I've had difficulty with her but I was close quite a few times. I think I belong at the top of the game."

Jankovic is aiming for Wimbledon, which starts June 25.

"Wimbledon is one of my favorite tournaments and I would love to play well and do well there," Jankovic said. "It's my dream to become No. 1 and maybe if I stay healthy I will make it."

COme on Maria!! Reach the final and beat her with a bagel please!!

 JJ didn't say anything that isn't true and you can't blame her for having some confidence in her ability. She has the game to beat anyone, I'm just not sure she has the mind to go with it.

I really hope they play in the final.

I really hope they play in the final.

I will say the same thing I said to my friend
but first, confidence is one thing, arrogance is another

Number one, I believe you should always be humble
Number 2, she's constant, not really a WOW player, Lena when plays well is a WOW player, WS, Juju and wow player when at their pic
Number 3, you should never get the WS out of contenders, once that they really do play well there. If in 2005 I was going to bet I for sure wouldn't put my money on Vee, I mean what?!
but well, they do play well there, and hit hard is great for grass
Maria isn't going to be out of the wimby as well, once that the tourny means a lot for her and since she won the worse she went was SF
and her game is really made for grass

for me, the whole Janko running style is more for CLAY, is not like you see many hits on a grass match, it's more about who does winner first
I believe that after Juju she was the best player ON CLAY, but her head does let her down lot of times (she keep screaming with herself, which is weird)
But grass is another surface, and is there that big hitter can get advantage
Amelie volleys can really work well there
just like Juju ones
Big hitter like Maria and WS (and even Lena) also go well there
but you won't see good running going that well there
was a big surprise that Nadal reach the final last year, 'cause everyone bet that he would never achieve such a thing there...

so yeah, even if she was Federer, that is close to unbeatable and without a doubt the best tennis player ever, she shouldn't say such a thing
is just too arrogant...a way arrogant
as much Roger is arrogant, that was too much even for him

I don't know about you, but I don't like that attitude
Lena on her form can easily beat her....
even Lena on "Not-a-bad-day" can beat her...

Maria Croft

I will say the same thing I said to my friend
but first, confidence is one thing, arrogance is another

Well there is a fine line between confidence and arrogance. I'd like to think that it's confidence but I don't think a bit of arrogance is a bad thing anyway.

I don't really see her winning Wimbledon. There are at least 3 or 4 players that probably have a better chance and her game is more suited to clay and hardcourts.

Also watching the Jankovic match she is a great player and can make some very good shots but when she thinks to hard about a shot she goes and messes it up, like many of you have said she has the talent but she needs to get her mind to catch up!!!

Few quotes from Masha (day 16) :D...

"Mentally, you have to be ready for a very long day. You have to be ready no matter how many stops there are, but it's difficult to come out not having played for two days, cold turkey. I got sloppy in the first match, but I was much better in the second."

"In the second match, I stepped in more. I only wanted to get rhythm out there, which is difficult when you are still not comfortable moving around out there."

"It will be important to recover physically," she said. "The shoulder was a little bit heavy today, but I hope it will recover."

"So far so good," said Sharapova who is still receiving treatment for a shoulder injury.

"I'm getting there. I felt a bit better, especially in my second match.

"It's tough coming out after not playing for two days and playing your best tennis. I did get a little sloppy in my first match. I was up a set and a break and I guess I lost my concentration for a bit.

"I played a really good, solid third set and then in the second game I was hitting the ball more. After not playing for two days, all you want to do is a to get a rhythm out there.

"I'm here to play matches and that's exactly what I did. I got five sets today."

'It's not a problem,' she said, 'because I spent the last two days doing nothing. What's important is getting match practice and I'm certainly getting a lot of that now.'
Sharapova is only 20 and yet she already appears a veteran. 'I can't really believe it is my fifth year in a row - I'm getting old,' she said at the start of the tournament. And any feelings of premature ageing would have been reinforced by a peer over the net at yesterday's first opponent.

Brilliant at times and then threw it away...thats what makes it so annoying

Well Masha lost the match and title to Jankovic after leading 3-0 in the final set. That's a bad job by Maria. :( And this hurts her confidence and chances heading into Wimbledon.

But the main thing is will her shoulder be okay for Wimbledon? I hope so.

I think maria should be more confident. She has been playing well, and will not have that two matches in one day stuff at Wimbledon. How fast were her serves? Hope she did not overdo it playing so much.

She must really be in tiptop condition to do all she has.

I feel a lot better about her now than I did three weeks ago.

Oh well :)

The match was disappointed :o I thought Mahsa could win it, 3-0 lead you know.

Well then, moving forward to Wimbly!

Oh dear, I started following in the third set.

I'm happy for Jelena but i'm rather disappointed at how Maria lost this, this was one she really should have won. :( But oh well, on to Wimbledon.

She did great and I'm happy she made it as far as she did. Now its time to kick some ass at Wimbledon. :)

What a disappointing loss for Maria. I still can`t believe that she wasted that 3-0 lead early in the 3rd set. The only positive we can take from this is that she got plenty of prep for Wimbledon in the last couple of days. So hopefully this time off will give Maria a chance to recharge her battery for Wimbledon.

No Doubt

I saw it was 3-0 on the live scores ticker and thought "yes, shes won!" but shame... ...JJ is a real fighter so I guess its not that bad, and the 2 matches in a day thing must have been hell.

The main thing is, this has really tested her shoulder and apart from a little too many DF it seems to have held up. I think she deserves a well earned weeks rest!!

Despite the loss, Masha showed good game (imho) and kept fighting until the end. It was a very close match... Actually, I didnt expect such a good game from both players after 3 matches in 2 days
Now its time to kick some ass at Wimbledon.
Yeah! In Wimby everything will be different... I hope so.

I don't like the fact that she lost against the Serbian, but anyway she'll show who is the queen of grass in Wimbldeon! It's great she could win 3 matches in 2 days, she must have been tired (i know Jelena too, but...:p ). Have a rest, go to Wimbledon, and as you say guys, kick them ass, haha!!!:D

Congratulations to both of our girls, for giving us a great match. Maria is a great person, despite what some morons are saying against her. She is a true champion even in defeat and she and Jelena are funny together, obviously the same sense of humor, which is joy to watch. I'm looking forward to Wimbledon. Both girls will do great there, I strongly believe that.

This is why tennis is so freakin' awesome! You just really never know until the end. It's a battle of the physical & mental. I'm sad for Maria & happy for Jelena. Can't wait for Wimbledon. 1 more week!
