i have a fealling that nicole is gonna have a good grass season this year because she will be disapointed with here clay season even tho she still did well at the french she will be disapointed that she got injured and ruined her prep for the french where if she didnt then she probably would have done alot better

Derek.

I hope she can have a good run here.

Great opportunity for points.

I'm worried about her backhand on grass though. :o

Serve and forehand should be just fine. ;)

I am looking forward to see how she can deal with shorter sliced balls with lower bounce as getting to a good position to strike them was a big problem last year. And like Derek I am concerned about Nicole's backhand. Eastbourne field looks very strong. Great players on the list, it won't be easy.

maybe it won't be easy for Nicole but Eastbourne will be the best grass preparation for Wimby... I'm sure Nicole's more mature and she improved her backhand to this season very well so she's much time to be usual on grass... good luck ;)

You have to admit, she does not really play so well on grass, but...

I think she may not get far in Eastbourne, but she will do very well at Wimbledon because then she will have a couple of matches already on grass.

Vaidisova
Jun 10th, 2007, 02:32 AM
But at Wimbledon she will be drawn to face a top 4 seed (Henin, Sharapova, Jankovic, Mauresmo) in the R16.

I'd like for her to get some good results on grass but not sure it is gonna happen this year...

yeah... she will face one player of TOP 4... but I'm sure Nicole can defeat all except Henin... she can defeat Henin too... but I don't believe it... so we have to hope she will draw Sharapova, Mauresmo or JJ... I think the best choice is JJ... Nicole always plays very aggresive and try to get winners... JJ only runs on the base-line and hit back all Nicole's balls so I think it would be great Nicole will play as at FO because Jelena wouldn't hit back all balls as on clay... because grass is much faster surface... we'll see :)

I want her to do well on grass too, she certainly has the serve for the stuff. I like her chances against Mauresmo mostly, I think that's the best 4th round match we could hope she gets. It's probably 50-50 against Jankovic, and it could be either really good or really bad against Sharapova. :tape:

But let's hope she gets some good matches in here before Wimbledon. :)

Yeah, they call it the Eastbourne Cup:

The Eastbourne Cup is a non-ranking tournament that runs alongside the main draw. Because of the high quality of field many players eager for grass court practice are unable to reach the main draw so the Eastbourne Cup is open to anyone that doesn’t reach the second round of the showpiece event.

You are beginning to sound like Lena D. fans.

Clearing a couple of rounds at Eastbourne would be very good considering how dangerous some of the unseeded players are.

As for playing a top 4 seed, those would be JH, Mauresmo, Kuznetsova and Petrova. Sharapova has withdrawn (even tough, contrary to popular belief, she was indeed in the entry list when it first came out). The remaining seeds are Lena D., Nicole, Peer and Na Li.

Anyways, I entered this thread to submit my Modest Proposal of a draft game plan for Nicole on real grass (Eastbourne is nowhere near as scarily fast as Queen's, but it's faster than Wimbledon, Halle and probably that Dutch thing).

Said plan being:

1) go for broke on 1st serve, rush the net
2) go for broke on 2nd serve, rush the net
3) everyone always serves to her BH, so as soon as her opponent tosses the ball move two steps to the left and let it rip. She'll be wrongfooted occasionally, and her opponents will begin mixing up their serves to avoid this, but before that happens she'll be up a break.

It was meant as a joke.

If I could draft game plans for tennis pros, I'd be out there living the high life of the Tour, and I wouldn't have a 3000+ post count at this loony bin.

Can't agree with you. This isn't an exho for Nicole to get match practice/experience/"face challenges". This is a TII, with many points and much $$$ on the line.

Nicole could use a good draw to go deep and haul some desperately needed ranking points, not "challenges", and certainly not the world #1 on the QF (if she gets that far). Everybody else is hogging tournaments like crazy, Nicole has fallen behing because of her injury, and no event can now be regarded as just some place to get match practice.

Sexysova
Jun 17th, 2007, 03:42 PM
if I'm right Nicole can earn 70 pts for QF so she will be back in TOP 10, right? but she won't I think because Lena D will reach QF too... she has really easy draw :( :( :(

Going by the stats, her serve really picked up after that first set. I'm glad Nicole didn't go away after blowing those 6BP in that one game. She came through with the win.

Now hopefully the next match will be an easier one.

Vaidisova takes long route into Eastbourne second round

EASTBOURNE, England, June 18 (Reuters) - Teenager Nicole Vaidisova took the long route into the second round of the Eastbourne International on Monday, needing three drawn-out sets to beat Samantha Stosur.

Czech Vaidisova, the only seed in action on a low-key opening day of the grasscourt championships, beat the Australian 3-6 6-4 6-4 in one hour 48 minutes.

The fifth-seeded Vaidisova will next play a Briton -- either wildcard Anne Keothavong or qualifier Elena Baltacha.

The top four seeds, led by defending champion and world number one Justine Henin of Belgium, have first-round byes and will join the fray later in the week.

Rain on Monday delayed proceedings and the shadows were already lengthening by the time Vaidisova and Stosur emerged on to the Centre Court.

Stosur, helped by a string of double faults from her opponent, broke the 18-year-old Vaidisova three times to win the first set in 34 minutes.

The Australian, ranked 14 places below Vaidisova at 28th in the world, let her concentration slip at the start of the second set, however, and was broken to love.

She broke back for 2-2 but was broken again to love as the 1.83-metre tall Vaidisova, a French Open quarter-finalist earlier this month, got into her stride.

In the deciding set, Stosur saved five breakpoints in a long third game which went nine times to deuce but lost her next service game to allow Vaidisova to take a 3-2 lead and go on to win.

"I think I hit a little too fast at the beginning, and had too many unforced errors," Vaidisova told reporters. "But I got through it, that's what counts."

Vaidisova's compatriot Lucie Safarova had to contend with stiff sea breezes and the hard hitting of German opponent Anna-Lena Groenefeld before getting her place in the second round with a 7-6 7-6 win.

Safarova, who beat Wimbledon champion Amelie Mauresmo at both the Australian Open and Roland Garros, will now play either ninth seed Sybille Bammer of Austria or Russian Maria Kirilenko.

Vaidisova is playing the Wimbledon tune-up tournament for the second time after losing in the first round at her 2005 debut.

"Of course I would have liked to have been off court in 40 minutes, but this was the perfect practise," she said.

"It was the first match of the season on grass, it was a fight.

"I had too many unforced errors in the first set, I was trying for too much. But I got used to the conditions.

"I got through, that's what counts. I'm ready for the next round."

DANASAN
Jun 20th, 2007, 02:16 PM
Nicole won her match, that's the main point. It seems that on the plus side of her game POWER is the master word. She can hit the ball harder than just about any other player in the top 20 list. However on the minus side it looks like she has trouble using that power efficiently and steadily because she cannot move fast enough on grass, sidewards or forwards. If she could improve on this weakness of hers I think she could win her matches much more easily. The double faults or the unforced errors (still too many of them !) being more or less compensated by the number of straight aces she's able to pull out. In as much as I would LOVE to see her win vs Justine I'm affraid she does not stand much of a chance being so slow in her movements. Is it the grass or a lack of physical form ? I wouldn't know.

However I wish her the very best of luck in the coming match. :)

I just watched a match on my VHS and Nicole has really huge serve and her df's were pulled out because of big wind or when Nicole led 40-0 so she tried 1st serve again :)

many ue's were pulled out by wind too because Nicole often hits it near lines... but overall I'm really glad with her playing on grass, she really improved it and in last matches on grass she had about 70% 1st serve in which is great :) :worship:

Michael_21

I think she is while inmature.. she has to more mature and be more experienced... we will see how she will do at Wimby... but I'm sure it's BULSHIT to change her coach... and I think it isn't fair that her fans(you all) think she should change it only because of this match!!!

Ana won only 3 games against JUJU and JJ 4 games as Nicole... so what do u want??? :fiery: :fiery: :fiery:

today Nicole lost 26 26 because of bad serve... Nicole had total OFF DAY... but if she would have good day she could give JUJU good match at least she would loss in two close sets...

and I think it isn't fair that her fans(you all) think she should change it only because of this match!!!

But it isn't only this one match! It's from tournament to tournament.

We just know she can do better.

She's never won a big title and she rarely beats top 10 players.

Ivanovic has 7 top 10 wins already this year compared to 5 total in Nicole's career.

Nicole isn't very good in the big matches. That's why people want her to get a new coach.

It's not a bad performance, it's just the way Nicole plays on grass. She doesn't move with the ball.

She isn't stagnating.Nicole needs to add maturity on her game and it cames with time.

You guys are expecting a lot from her, missing the fact she's young.A lot of people thought she was going to be a top 5 or 3 player in the end of the year but it's just wrong to think like that. She won't win anything big this year as she isn't ready.

It isn't just because of this match. Nicole's level has been about the same since last year, getting to QF/SF and then losing to a better player. Is she just gonna keep on like this?

Nicole can improve on a lot obviously so she needs to get someone to help, since it really hasn't happened with her current coach.

omg why do all think it? I think you shouldn't say it because Nicole played pretty well yesterday... it's only about Nicole's playing I think Alex is great coach and he wants to Nicole finds her great game... she's in TOP 3 when she's on FIRE!!! so I don't want any other coach for Nicole I think it isn't in coach... but I have to admit Alex should have answers to Nicole when she looks at him during bad moments...

Yes I agree with you
People always says that players need new coach when they are going through a bad time ! Hey guys open your eyes Nicole is only 18 it is normal to her to lose sometimes and we all know that the grass is not her surface. Remember she reached the quarter final at RG without playing any tournament during one month before !
Go on Nikki :bounce:

I would say not only this match (against Krajicek at Amelia Island)

And what do I think Nicole should take another coach.
Corpuscule, just watch this article you post on your website.
(about Alex Kodat) He came with dark sunglasses after match and he quipped: "I don't want you to see my tears." said Alex Kodat. [...]
What could he advise?

"Hardly anything. Nicole played well. I could indicate her: Don't attack too much, try to play more patiently. Or: Try to go more often in the net. But this advice could be wrong," balanced Kodat

Alex helped Nicole to become a Top 10 player. But Nicole needs a coach to become a Top 5 player! Just whatch what Alex said, He didn't know what to do.

I don't think we expect too much from her.

Most of us are very satisfied with her year so far as she's gone deep in almost every tournament, but we would like to see her maybe sneak into a final once or win the title.

A lot of other top 15'ers have won titles this year. Why not Nicole?

She can do it.

Wrong.Nicole is more consitent.

She never beat any top 10 player this year but her game has improved.Nicole doesn't control well her huge segment. It's all about patience and maturity. Vaidisova 2007 > Vaidisova 2006.

She doesn't need to change her coach.

Good preparation for Wimbledon indeed. At least now we know what we should expect in round 16. As some of you pointed out when was the last time Nicole beat a higher seeded opponent? Of course I didn't expect her to beat Ju, but this wasn't even slightly competitive. No sign of improvement on this surface, unfortunately. Still the same problems.
Corpuscle, Nicole played "Bally" yesterday, a british player, therefore crap. ;)

I know that she's improved, but it hasn't been enough to take her to the next level of being able to beat some other top players as well. Maybe a different coach can help her get to the next level.

Maybe she could train in Spain over the off-season. Maybe hire another travelling coach too.

I know what your feelings are, it's the same with me.I'm sad to see that Nicole is unable to win a title at this moment but she's playing toughest tournaments compared to the last year. The draw is one of the big element of a success's player.

Of course, she can do it but mentally, she isn't ready. It doesn't mean her game, in itself, is stagnating.

Well, that's only my thought but I always believed Nicole is a type of player who needed a long time to win a big title.

P.S: sorry for mystakes.

Yes, it's the time now but as the schedule is very important and she never played an easy tournament since the beginnig of the year, it looked comprehensible (but maybe not acceptable).

I totally agree with you... she needs more time... it's better to start winning of tours later than in her first or second year on professional tour and then disappear..

Damn man what a disaster today. I`m glad that i didn`t get early to see it. I was really hoping that Nicole would be a lot more competitive against Justine. Today`s match really shows that she still has a lot to work on before she can reach the top level that Justine is at.

Not only Nicole has not made the slightest progress over the past year but I would go as far as saying that she has regressed ! She would be totally unable to beat any top 10 player today on any surface, whether clay, quick or grass. The tennis she showed today vs Justine was just plain crap and certainly not worthy of a player ranked #14. I am simply scared at the thought that she could very well be kicked out of Wimbledon by a number 50 or lower in the first round... It really hurts to see her play that way when everyone knows her potential and how good she could be with the right coaching ! I say it is time for her to find the right guy fast for this vital job. So many young players are now pushing to reach the top 10 positions. There is no time to waste. Patience, yes of course, but hard work and lots of training and playing matches is required these days if you are to succeed in this very competitive sport. Look at the number of matches Jelena Jankovic has played since the beginning of the season and consider her results compared to Nicole's who has played very little ! This is a hard job (winning) and you have to work hard if you are to get results. I say it's time Nicole gets to work and really starts to play tennis !

Jankovic has the worst management of a career a top player can dream. You'll understand why the next year or in two years.

You said it.
What a bad scoreline, albeit it was against Justine on Nicole's worst (in my opinion) surface.
Nicole has had a really solid season minus the early loss in Charleston and the injury during the clay season. She's been very consistant but consistancy doesn't win titles and help confidence grow. I also think that Nicole should get another coach to help her strategy (game wise and mentally) out there. Just another voice in her ear along side her step father.

Nicole needs to step up her game, bring it to that next level, the big question is when.
