15 year old Kurumi seems to be a player to look out for :) She just lost in the Roland Garros quallies but put up a good show vs Brengle.
She is just outside the top 20 in Junior ranks, similar to Morita at this age.

I wish Kurumi will soon start trying her luck in some Japanese ITF tournaments. It would be interesting to see what she can do. Misaki didn't do so bad in 10k Tokyo Ariake earlier this year. Hopefully we can see Kurumi play Hamanako or Kofu, the last Japanese challengers of the year.
Congrats girl  so proud of you.

Not to take away from Kurumi, but the field was very disappointing for a GA though. :o Lykina and Hofmanova were the only threats, but Lykina is streaky and Hofmanova is overrated.

I agree, Kurumi should start testing the waters in seniors. She could get some solid results.

If Kurumi doesn't play the ITF tour this year, I mean the Asian swing is practically over she probably will start it next year in May around Gifu? which is the first tournament on the Japanese calendar.

I hope we can see her play the all Japanese Championships this year. Last year Erika Takao won it defeating Aiko Nakamura in the final. Its the biggest domestic competition in Japan.

I found this very nice article about the girls from their win over Pavlyuchenkova and Pervak from earlier this year.

http://communities.canada.com/montrealgazette/blogs/opencourt/archive/2007/09/06/it-s-a-dog-eat-dog-world-out-there-in-the-juniors.aspx

It's a dog-eat-dog world out there in the juniors
Great drama out on one of the smaller courts yesterday, where the No. 1-seeded junior girls' team of Anastasia Pavlyuenchova and Ksenia Pervak of Russia were taking on the unseeded team of Misaki Doi and Kurumi Nara of Japan.

It looked like a serious physical mismatch. But there was no doubt the Japanese girls can play.

While Pavlyuchenkova is ranked No. 1 in the world in the juniors, and Pervak No. 6 (they're both 16), the Japanese girls were no slouches, either.

Doi is ranked No. 63, and lost in the first round of singles qualifying. Nara, just 15, is ranked No. 20. They played together in Repentigny last week at the big junior event there, and waxed the Canadian team of Rebecca Marino and Khristina Blajkevitch 6-1 6-0.

Marino, you might remember, won the singles event.

Anyhow, the Japanese girls won the first set, and the Russian coaches were getting pretty fidgety. Pavlov Nicolaevich, Pervak's coach, was chain-smoking (and hiding it underneath the stands, which fooled no one.

http://img114.imageshack.us/img114/8968/93030644kv2.png

The Japanese broke serve late in the second set, and easily served out a 6-4, 6-4 win.
http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/8039/66103517st8.png
Pavlyuchenkova, is not used to losing, She won the Australian Open singles this year, got to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon and the semis at the French.

But last year, she won both the U.S. Open and Australian, and got to the final of the French. In doubles, she came within one match of winning the Grand Slam, losing only the final of the U.S. Open. In three of those events, she played with Toronto's Sharon Fichman (winning two).

She got the what-for after this one from her coach/father.

http://img114.imageshack.us/img114/5631/94150216bd6.png

Meanwhile, the Japanese team was all smiles, posing for photos and bowing each time someone took their picture:
http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/2194/78123947pr1.png
Pervak's coach, Nicolaevich, was no less displeased:
http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/1052/99553475fh4.png

But the Japanese just kept signing autographs. They have pretty short names, but it seemed as though they were signing first, middle and last names, full addresses and dates of birth - with great care and perfect penmanship.

http://img114.imageshack.us/img114/4581/11789854rz7.pnghttp://img114.imageshack.us/img114/9840/21842849oo8.png

There was a bow and a smile after each autograph, too.

It was really great stuff. And you didn't have to speak either language to appreciate it.

***UPDATE, Friday morning, 8 a.m.. The two Russian girls just stormed into Starbucks, nearly knocking over everything in their way - including me. Clearly, they STILL haven't gotten over it.

The Japanese team, by the way, won their quarter-final match 6-4 in the third set, and are now in the semis - still smiling.

I just thought some of the others who post here would like to see some video clips of Kurumi from the 83rd AJC 2007, where she beat some good players like Takao and Yonemura. The backhand. :inlove: You can't tell much from the Yonemura clip but the Takao clip. Wow  She absolutely dominated her and was really agressive.

Nice to see Kimiko playing with these young girls. Great honours for them.
Kurumi got a MD wc for Gifu and Misaki got a QD WC.

There were some pretty nice choices for wildcards except Kana Watanabe getting one, even though she's a local girl from Gifu, Misaki should have got it in my opinon. Oh well

What a strange decision to play here. I can understand that she wanted to clay match practice, but why choose here of all tourneys when she could've made the MD of ITF events...

Let's see if this decision pays off or not...

ex hopman
Apr 26th, 2010, 12:51 PM
Her coach and she think she should try out at higher grade tourneys this time... so that she could play with higher ranked players too.
As Kimiko says, staying in those Japanese circles, maybe you could get some points to be in top 200 or so... but to get to the next step, you'd need to beat better players and get more points... they are trying those this time.

Now, she's top 150?? she could get into top 100, I think. She's talented.
Hope it goes well!!!

So happy for Kurumi. :yeah: She's making sport headlines in Japan.
No doubt her next match will be great opportunity for her to get some experience against top-calibre. :yeah: I think it will be streamed online.

:yeah: She's making sport headlines in Japan.
It's quite interesting you mention that. When she beat Paszek at Roehampton, there was no media interest there whatsoever. However, during Misaki Doi's match against Dentoni, there were so many members of the Japanese media and she had to do lots of interviews as soon as she left the court.

Maybe Kurumi isn't/wasn't seen as bigger a prospect as Doi.

Anyway, Kurumi's ranking moves up to around 115. I think her goal should be to try and attain direct acceptance to the US Open. Very close to breaking the top 100 now too.

Gambatte Kurumi!
