Damn man Makiri has such bad luck with the draw. :( I think that she can get a couple of wins since she`s playing a qualifer and neither Dechy or Brianty seems like a threat to her on grass. Beyond that will take a miracle since it`s very likely she`ll be facing Jelena. Still i wish Makiri nothing but the best in Birmingham and hope that she gives it her best there. :yeah:

No.16 seed Kirilenko was another player to grace the stadium court on Monday and after a difficult season in which she has won just eight matches, the 20-year-old Muscovite was understandably delighted with her assured 63 63 win over Raquel Kops-Jones.

"It was my first match of the year on grass, so it was pretty difficult at the start," Kirilenko said, "but I got better as the match progressed and I was really happy to get the win. Grass is a tough surface as the bounce is not always consistent and it takes a little while to get used to, but I was volleying well and I hope I can build on this performance."

Makiri lost the first set 5-7 against Dechy and now won the second set at love with a second serve ace 6-2.

Serving wise, she's doing excellent. 7 aces and 70% of her first serves. In the second set, she won 92% of her first serves and 80% of her second serves.

You can do it! Win your first three setter in awhile! :(

I don't know but she seems to have beefed up serve a bit. I think that's a good thing cause she had a few problems holding serve through crucial moments.

4 aces and not one double fault in the second set.

That's a nice comeback win for Masha over Dechy. :) And her serving 9 aces is a good sign for her career. I just hope this kind of serving was not just a 1 match thing. Because if Makiri learns how to hold serve she will improve alot as a player. Her problem has always been being unable to hold serve in close matches.

It was a good match. Very enjoyable. Shame they had to stick it out on court two where so few people could see it. The photographers certainly took notice of this match. I don't think I've seen so many in one place at the same time ;)

Many of the matches I've seen so far have been played predominantly from the baselines, so it made a welcome change to see these two moving up the courts and at the net so often. Both were really quite handy at the net. Maria played rather well, I thought. Nathalie, too, for a while. Two guys really managed to upset her and she seemed to get distracted. Maria took control after that.

I'm not sure what Maria was up to before the match, but they had to call her a second time. Everyone was waiting on court for her. Even Nathalie seemed to find it amusing and did this running motion as if Maria was running to the court. She wasn't. She just strolled down the path a short while later

realistically, she will need to be at her best to even compete with jankovic. i honestly wouldn't be too upset if she lost in a tight two set match, but if she won or even managed to take a set of her, it will do wonders for her confidence heading into wimbledon.

DFS washed out on day four

Persistent rain prevented players from taking to the courts on day four of the DFS Classic in Birmingham, setting the stage for a spectacular line-up for Friday with play beginning at 10.30am and competitors expected to play two matches (weather permitting).

Tournament No.2 seed Jelena Jankovic kicks off the action on centre court taking on Maria Kirilenko of Russia in their third round match.

Jankovic and Kirilenko, the No.16 seed, have faced each other once before, in 2006 in the first round in San Diego. Serbian Jankovic was the winner there, 6-1, 6-4, on a hard court.

Currently the world No.3, Jankovic has settled well on the grass courts of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour event, despite a late arrival to Birmingham. “For my first match I did quite well,” said Jankovic. ”I hit quite a flat ball so it suits me, suits my game more, the faster surfaces. I am looking forward to my next match.”

Lets keep sensible here. You dont get too be #3 in the world unless you can stop lower ranked players from closing it out.

It is was a tall order, the world #44 against the in form #3. But Masha took it too Jelena. The last time they played Maria lost 1-6 4-6, and Jelena has a years more experience as a pro than Masha. So its not all doom and gloom. True the DBLF's didnt help her. But how may higher ranked players have take Jelena too 3 sets recently? Not many.

Maria is finding her game at last. Lets hope she can carry this forward to Eastbourne and Wimbledon.

Take it too them Masha!!!

I Know I sound negative but I'm also being realistic about Maria and her game. I think that unless Maria hires a good coach who can help her win close matches she will contunue to struggle. Masha can't outsmart her opponents on her own so she needs a good coach to help her with stragtegy. But Maria doesn't have one and it's hurting her career alot. :( It's been a year and a half of these kinds of agonizing losses for Makiri with no end in sight. :banghead: And it has to be taking a toll on her mental toughness. :bigcry:  Masha can be so much better than she is. But she doesn't know how to go about hiring the right people to help her. Nor do her parents. :(

JimM
Jun 15th, 2007, 04:48 PM
They tried to hire Nigel Sears mate. He was offered a "Lucrative" one year contract but opted for the WTA coaching post. Whether its was Maria's folks or Adidas that made the offer I dont know.

Adidas have Sven Groenfeld (hope thats the right spelling) acting as a "floating coach" for Adidas players. Its he who Helped Ana I improve so much. Maybe the could make him an offer? Maybe he has tried coaching Maria in the past without result. Maybe its just Maria, and it wouldnt make any difference who coached.

I'm like you, agonising over the losses, but it might just be her confidence that needed boosting for things to click in. A good run at Eastbourne and Wimby would help her no end in that respect.

she did pretty well considering that jankovic was #3, but perhaps this helped mariak:

Jankovic advanced to the quarterfinals despite being hampered by a sore neck.

"When I woke up my neck was so stiff, I couldn't turn to the left," Jankovic said. "I got some treatment and I think it will take a couple of days to loosen up. I was struggling a little bit and I didn't play my best tennis. I just tried to stay focused."

its guess its still pretty disappointing cause Jankovic saved a break point when down 0-2 in the second set and then broke mariak's serve twice in a row. she could have won!!

:sobbing: So close to pulling out a major upset... and on grass!
It's a shame she keeps losing all these tight matches, but she gave the #3 player a scare, and that counts for something.
