Great draw. Sveta davai!

May 26th, 2007, 03:15 PM
Good draw. I just fear Shahar Peer

May 26th, 2007, 04:00 PM
Definitely a sense of deja vu. I was in Melbourne one memorable Sunday back in January. Shahar Peer beat the pants off Sveta - but then Sveta was not on form then. Now Sveta is on form, and on clay. So this time it will be different. So apart from that one possible match-up in the 4th round, yes, a good draw for Sveta.

May 26th, 2007, 06:45 PM
How is Shahar on clay? I have no idea.

May 26th, 2007, 06:52 PM
good luck Sveta!

May 26th, 2007, 07:36 PM
How is Shahar on clay? I have no idea.

I don't know it either! Didn't hear much about her in the last weeks  We can't expect anything from Nastya, but if she's in form than it could become difficult already in the second round...

May 27th, 2007, 01:00 AM
with mauresmo not playing well atm, and clay being sharapova's weakest surface sveta is probably the favourite from this half to make the final. and they'd have to make the semis to play each other. definately a couple of dangers in kuzys half of the draw but all in all a very good draw.

May 27th, 2007, 01:16 PM
Good luck Sveta!!
I fear also Shahar but a good draw on the whole.

May 27th, 2007, 01:17 PM
How is Shahar on clay? I have no idea.

Shahar is a very good clay courter. She has 2 or 3 smaller clay court titles and ook Hingis to the limit in the fourth round last year. Clay really suits her game IMO.

May 27th, 2007, 07:50 PM
Looks like she's not scheduled to play till Tuesday. It might even stop raining by then.

Shahar's form on clay? well, she fell early, can't remember whether it was Rome or Berlin, just the other week - and that meant Sveta was spared having to play her, having been in the same section of the draw. But anyway let's hope for the best this week, come on Sveta!!

Meanwhile, I've been thinking what chants and cheers we can use to encourage Sveta. I remembered a pop-song from some time around 1990, which was popular in the UK and maybe in other countries too, and it went 'this beat is... this beat is... this beat is technotronic' chanted with an even, quaver-like rhythm. It would fit quite well to chant 'Svetlana... Svetlana... Svetlana Kuznetsova' to the same rhythm. I shall maybe try that when I (hopefully) see her at Eastbourne! That is, of course, after she has done well at Roland Garros...

Thanks for all the information about Shahar on clay.

p.s. Chants! I think the French have actual songs
they sing to cheer for their Fed Cup team, so that
would be a lot of fun.

Sveta with Nadia - to play Alicia Molik (a good friend of Sveta's, as she stood up for Sveta during A.O. 2005 when substance allegations were made against her - I was reading this on the tripod site) and Mara Santangelo

"I am sorry to announce that Svetlana's first-round match in Paris has been delayed, by approximately twenty-four hours, due to persistent rain in Paris. Please accept our apologies for this delay, and any inconvenience this may cause."

Do I sound like the announcer at the station when the train is late?

Looks like Sveta will not be playing till Wednesday. The order of play suggests they're trying to get men's first round completed tomorrow.

May 29th, 2007, 06:43 PM
Another possible Sveta song came into my mind on the way to work this morning. (Silly wacky idea of mine...) The music for this one is mainly instrumental, played by lead saxophone with a backing to it, and then every so often, you must know the one I mean, someone calls out "Tequila!!". Well, instead of that, we could cry out "Svetlana"...

May 29th, 2007, 06:59 PM
I think she'd get a kick out of that.

Hey--if you go to Wimbledon this year, make sure you sing "Happy Birthday"
to her. I actually saw her on the practice courts on her b-day, but forgot
to sing to her. (I had some fat man squishing the life out of me and it
was so unpleasant I forgot. Bad excuse, I know, but I had never experienced
the Wimbledon crowds before, and this guy was seriously trying to squash me
against the wall.)

May 29th, 2007, 10:50 PM

May 29th, 2007, 10:56 PM
I was actually there on her birthday last year too. She was playing her first-round match on Court 2, and I was right at the back, in the free standing area. Well distant from Sveta, but had I been close enough I sure would've wished her a happy birthday. Whether that would have been the Stevie Wonder version, or the one by Altered Images, I dunno... Of course this year her birthday will be on the Wednesday, first week of Wimbledon.

May 29th, 2007, 11:06 PM
Getting back to the thread subject - well, she's on tomorrow, first match. Maybe I'll sneak a look at the scores while I'm at work!! COME ON SVETA !!!!

May 30th, 2007, 12:58 AM
Yeah, I was on Court 2 as well--the Oprandi match.
I swore I would never go back to Court 2 (but I'm sure I
will someday.)

First match on tomorrow? That's probably 2am my time.

May 30th, 2007, 11:51 AM
Sveta won 60 63 in her first match

very solid start

May 30th, 2007, 06:13 PM
That was a stroll in the park this morning. I looked at the score about 25mins after the match would have started and she'd already won the first set! Pity she lost three games in the second... Just a gentle warm-up, ready for her next match which will probably be scheduled for tomorrow if the rain holds off ;-)

May 31st, 2007, 09:59 PM
Sveta was down 05 and rallied to win 76 63

May 31st, 2007, 10:36 PM
Oh deary me. Svetlana. Love-5 down in the first set. Almost had to put the Tequila on hold. I think they were delayed by rain as well during the match. Good job she managed to recover the situation. A day off now before the next match.
By the way, I read earlier in the week that Nadia has got injured, does that mean Sveta won't be playing in the doubles?

Jun 1st, 2007, 12:59 AM
Yeah, she and Petrova are out of doubles. (Or at least that's
what someone posted in GM.)

What a comeback

I was thinking i am sleeping she watched her going down 0-5 0-40 Meg was playing good Sveta was out of place

Russian rock-singer Zemfira was watching Sveta on court and Sveta had a meeting with her

In post match interview Sveta was surprised how Meg started the match

Seems Sveta was too confident that she would win easly

Sveta won 62 63. Next is probably Peer, who will be much tougher.

Jun 2nd, 2007, 01:14 PM
I think it will be Peer as well. I hope she can take revenge this time ;)

Jun 2nd, 2007, 01:54 PM
Peer is battling hard at the moment against Srebotnik. Not even sure she'll win ;)

Go Sveta,whoever you face next!!!!

Jun 2nd, 2007, 02:11 PM
Peer won 6 straight games in the 3rd set. Sveta has to be ready, and stay focused the whole match.

Jun 2nd, 2007, 02:34 PM
Good match today, with Mauresmo out... I hope that Sveta can win this
year in Rolanga :wavey:

Jun 2nd, 2007, 03:36 PM
Ok...Revenge against Peer then.I hope Sveta sends her home :D

Jun 2nd, 2007, 05:04 PM
She looks good! Also looks like she's having fun, but is
focused/intense. Good good good.

Jun 2nd, 2007, 06:40 PM
I'm happy. Nice straightforward straight-sets win. Great photos too, thanks!

Till tomorrow. Hoping she'll make it past Shahar Peer in straights as well. Maybe Shahar will be tired after playing three sets today.

Go go Svetlana!! Go Sveta!!

Jun 3rd, 2007, 12:23 AM
She's doing great. :yeah:
Come on Sveta!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jun 3rd, 2007, 12:12 PM
Sveta is up 54, on serve. If Sveta is patient, she should win.

Jun 3rd, 2007, 12:53 PM
Sveta got ahead 64 50, then started playing very sloppy, now 53

Jun 3rd, 2007, 01:01 PM
She won 6-4 6-3 :D :bounce:

Jun 3rd, 2007, 01:27 PM

What a great win!! I'm happy again!! Well done Sveta..

Jun 3rd, 2007, 01:45 PM
Oh, revenge is so sweet!

Just been looking at the match statistics. They're pretty impressive (except maybe the unforced-error count) - see http://www.rolandgarros.com/en_FR/scores/stats/day13/2118ms.html

Here's to the quarter-finals ... probably v Ana Ivanovic. (Remember, she beat Sveta in Berlin I think it was, or maybe it was Rome. Early days yet, Ana is on serve in the first set of her match v Anabel M-G at this moment.)

PS - Mary, I bet you had a sleepless night but will be overjoyed having awoken to the good news today. ;)

Jun 3rd, 2007, 02:21 PM
Sveta will probably play Ivanovic, who beat her in Berlin. She needs to focus all match.

Jun 3rd, 2007, 03:43 PM
Ivanovic next.

The photos of today's match:

Jun 3rd, 2007, 04:10 PM
Oh, revenge is so sweet!
PS - Mary, I bet you had a sleepless night but will be overjoyed having awoken to the good news today. ;)

I forced myself to watch the AO match last night, the one
where Sveta was recovering from bronchitis. (I did the same
kind of thing before Sveta played Justine in...Berlin? is
that right?) And I realized: 1.) Sveta can beat her and
2.) that if Peer had won, I would have accepted it, since
Peer is good, very good.

But yes, I slept through today's match (I've been ill, and needed
to try to sleep through the night), but did have a restless night
(I've been running night fevers, which are never good for sleeping

Sveta's belly is taped. Does anyone know what's going on?

Jun 3rd, 2007, 04:27 PM
I also noticed her belly is taped but I don't know the reason.I didn't see the match as it was not shown here. But I watched the end of Ivanovic's match and the serbian kis playing very good.Anyway I think if Sveta is focused she can win her.

Jun 3rd, 2007, 04:30 PM
Nice win! I hope she'll take the second revenge against Ana ;)

Davai, Sveta.

Don't know anything about her belly

Jun 3rd, 2007, 06:41 PM
So Sveta managed to beat her nemesis Shahar Peer. This can only add to her confidence. Today after her match she admitted she isn't yet playing her best, so I hope she can improve further, meaning that against Ana Ivanovic (another nemesis!) she stands a good chance of winning if she keeps focussed. I do believe this could be one of the best chances Sveta will ever get of winning another Grand Slam title - if I'm not getting ahead of myself in saying this already - the heavyweights (Justine, Serena, Jelena Jankovic) are all in the top half of the draw, while here we are with Sveta quietly working her way through round by round, an improving game, and the confidence to keep beating players who have beaten her earlier in the season. As she had to pull out of the doubles because of Nadia's injury, Sveta will also be getting enough rest between matches. Come on Sveta you can do it.

Sveta has Monday off, then a very big match with Ana. Sveta has to be patient and stay focused.

Good luck against Ivanovic!!!!
Go Sveta!!!

Yeah, she's a sweetheart, isn't she?

Did you have a good time in Paris?

I hope Sveta can do it :D

Jun 3rd, 2007, 09:47 PM

Q. You told us yesterday you wanted your revenge; you got your revenge today. Are you happy with this?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: Yeah. Now I'm looking to another revenge. You know, it's never easy to beat her, and I did few mistakes. And I was up 5-Love, Love-30, and I just thrash too much. And I knew she was dangerous and I was not playing well, but then I concentrated and make my serve well in 5-3.

Q. You're already thinking about quarterfinals or you think past quarterfinals?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: Of course, quarterfinals. You never do another thing when you play, especially the French Open. And I have very tough next two opponents, Medina or Ivanovic. Medina is playing well. Ivanovic, I lost to her in Berlin 7-6 in the third, so that's what I was saying. I will try to get another revenge there, also.

Q. Except for closing out the match, was it your best match, you think, of the tournament so far?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: I think yesterday I also played very well. I didn't so many comments, I didn't, I think I played very well the match yesterday. Another girl, she's pretty good.
And today in first set I didn't play so well. And then in second set, I was 5-Love up, Love-30 game, I was playing excellent game. But then I didn't play so well. Too many unforced errors. But then I closed it up.
But it was good match, but I don't think it was very good tennis yet, so I'm looking forward to show a better one. But, you know, it was good enough to win.

Q. Overall how do you feel, I mean, at this point in the tournament?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: I'm feeling great, you know. It's great. I've been through four rounds, four matches without losing a set, playing confident, good tennis, and not spending so much energy. I have day off tomorrow, and then just looking pretty fresh, playing my next match.

Q. Roger Federer says he thinks you're the favorite for the --
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: No. Roger said that he likes to watch me play. He didn't say I'm a favorite, okay? I know that.

Q. What do you think of his compliment anyway?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: Well, the Russian press told me so, and I thought like, "No, it was a joke."
So today I wanted to check it myself. And I went to Internet last night and I read this. And it's if I would have to choose a compliment of anybody of, like, best thing to hear about myself, definitely it's the best I ever heard.
And it's, like, the best you can hear. Like Roger, is legend. He's almost -- it's my dream. It's never going to come true, but Roger played unbelievable tennis. I mean, it's unbelievable to hear this, to hear him say about my tennis.
So it's a little bit compliment for me. He's my, like, hero, you know. So it's, like, the best. There's no more words the say about that.

Q. So you have to win now so not to disappoint him?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: Well, it's too much pressure to take on myself, but really thinking that he likes my game, I would like to prove it more, you know, so, yeah, that's it.

Q. Last year you played the final. Does it give you something, a plus, something like a plus?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: The plus I'm getting this year by passing round by round, showing that I really can do well in French Open and just playing well, you know. I'm just confident and playing. Yeah, I just -- it's great to be here. That's the only thing. I love doing -- I love playing tennis, and it's great to pass round by round here at French Open.

Q. Do you think that certain regions produce certain styles of players? You have an interesting perspective because you grew up in Russia and you trained mostly had in Spain. But do you believe that that's the case, you can look at certain countries and say --
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: Yeah, I do believe where a player train, like this is gross, but it's also important thing, it's mentality, which I think I have Russian mentality. The Spanish people are my friends and my coaches, they not agree 100 percent with that. I still have lots of things which I love from Spain, which I took to myself. But, still, in my heart, whatever it is, it's Russian, you know, and it's mixed. So I think it helps me a lot.

Q. Do you think your strokes are more Spanish and your mentality is more Russian?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: Yeah, this is it. I think so, you know. There could be so many other opinions, but also like Maria, you can see, like, she plays more, like, flat tennis. You know, but it's different, of course. Her body is different than mine. And Amelie plays French tennis. Well, I don't know. But, you can see definitely.

Q. What is that mentality? What is that Russian mentality? How would you describe that?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: Well, like, first of all, you go hard, very hard to yourself, and you would not give up, or, you know, you would not be afraid of difficult times. And then sometimes we're a little too crazy. Let's say it this way.

Q. Russian women are often thought of as technicians, you know, with staying at the baseline, hitting two-handed backhands.
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: But this is tennis, you see. This is not mentality.

Q. Do you think that comes out of a certain mentality?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: No, this is tennis, you're talking about, the game. And what's about what you think in your head is just different. I don't think comparing like me and Elena Dementieva, we have different games, but we have similar, maybe, mentality where we would fight, fight, fight and fight. That's what I see, the mentality.

Q. Russian, you do say Russian men players have different mentality than the women?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: Well, about fighting, I don't know.

Q. There are three in the draw for the first time.

Q. Yes.

Q. Andreev, and Davydenko.
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: Well, you see, like Andreev, it's Spanish tennis, completely Spanish. I don't think there is much of Russian. But mentality, I think he has so much of Russian personality, especially.
Davydenko, he's completely Russian, in game, in mentality, everything. I don't want to discuss guys. You know them better than I do. I'm just like -- we're not commentator on TV or something like that.
I think guys -- not so many guys now in Russian tennis. But I think they're doing so much better now than they've been last year and stuff.

Jun 3rd, 2007, 10:23 PM
Seeing the transcribed interview above, let's hope some of the magic that Roger regularly produces is going to rub off on Sveta!!

So Mary, you put yourself through watching that Melbourne match again, Sveta v Peer?! You'll have noticed that there were a lot of people cheering for Shahar, but inbetween you might have heard a lone voice calling out 'Kuzy!' Well, that would have been me.
(Of course, Sveta wasn't on form then, as it was soon after she'd had that bronchitis. Peer is a good player, you're right, but if she played like that all the time she'd be in the Top 10 by now. Peer didn't let Sveta play her game and find her full rhythm on that fateful Melbourne Sunday; nor did Sveta play confidently - she had numerous opportunities to put winners away but she pushed her shots at only half-pace and aimed well in from the lines, so on numerous occasions Peer was able to turn it around and hit winners herself. Oh it was painful to watch...)

Seeing the transcribed interview above, let's hope some of the magic that Roger regularly produces is going to rub off on Sveta!!

That would be fine, but we should remember Sveta has her
own magic as well!

So Mary, you put yourself through watching that Melbourne match again, Sveta v Peer?! You'll have noticed that there were a lot of people cheering for Shahar, but inbetween you might have heard a lone voice calling out 'Kuzy!' Well, that would have been me.

No kidding! I will have to listen for that, if I ever
watch that match again. Very cool--did you have a good
time in Melbourne?

It works out good that Sveta plays Peer and Ivanovic. They both beat Sveta when she had excuses. Now Sveta can play them on a level playing field.

Jun 4th, 2007, 07:17 PM
I hope she'll fin it. Ana had a very tough match against Anabel, so Sveta is perhaps a little bit fitter.
I'll cross my fingers. Come on!

BTW: First match tomorrow!

Jun 4th, 2007, 08:01 PM
Sveta can win anyone on clay even Justine when it is not a final.....I think she will be ok.....

Jun 4th, 2007, 08:32 PM
good luck Sveta!

Jun 4th, 2007, 10:02 PM
:fiery: I won't be able to watch the match as I'll be working.Stupid schedule!!! I'm a little nervous about that match...

Davai Sveta!!!!

Jun 4th, 2007, 10:16 PM
I'm going to watch this match. I'm looking forward to it.

Jun 4th, 2007, 10:26 PM
I suspect I'll be asleep...

Jun 5th, 2007, 11:21 AM
Sveta is already down 2 breaks, 03. She's playing awful now.

Jun 5th, 2007, 11:29 AM
Sveta went down 04 and she's playing so bad, now they're showing the Nicole-Jelena match. Sveta can't keep her match competitive so far.

Jun 5th, 2007, 11:36 AM
Sveta lost 06. This will be over quick unless she plays much better.

Jun 5th, 2007, 11:38 AM
Sveta only got 8 points in the set

Jun 5th, 2007, 11:42 AM
It's 11 in the 2nd, but Ana is still the better player. She's on her game today.

Jun 5th, 2007, 11:50 AM
Sveta up 31, Ana cooling off

Jun 5th, 2007, 12:00 PM
Sveta should come to net when she runs Ivanovic around. She wastes great shots by standing around while Ana pushes it back on the run, 23

Jun 5th, 2007, 12:05 PM
Sveta leads 52

Sveta serving 53 30-30. Now 06 63. One set to go

Jun 5th, 2007, 12:27 PM
Sveta down 13 in 3rd. Sveta called for the doctor. She looks finished. 40-0 to go 41 for Ana
Nopw 41 Ana. So Ana beats her in the Berlin final and the RG QF.
Ana is the better player

does she play pro tennis, it's hard to tell. This is breaking my heart

Jun 5th, 2007, 12:36 PM
Sveta lost 60 36 61. She was outplayed badly in the 2 sets she lost

Jun 5th, 2007, 12:46 PM
 terribly disappointing

I don't think I can ever watch her again.

Jun 5th, 2007, 01:22 PM
Ana outplayed her. This is the soft half. Sveta didn't deserve to go any further.
And the next major is much better for Sharapova and both Williams.
This was the best chance for Sveta

Damn! I wished her so much to win this game. I didn't watch the match, because I was at school, but why she called the doctor?

I think Ana will make it to the final

Jun 5th, 2007, 06:19 PM
Well, it wasn't to be. Compliments to Ana, though, she must have played great, and may well at least beat Maria to make the final now.
I was at work, and sneaked a look at the score from time to time. When I first looked Sveta had lost the first set 6-0 and I feared the worst, i.e. possible injury, noting that she had been observed with taping on her stomach on Sunday. But then the second set went the other way and I started feeling very emotional for Sveta knowing she might pull it around. So the third set was disappointing.

Jun 6th, 2007, 10:20 AM
What a comeback

I was thinking i am sleeping she watched her going down 0-5 0-40 Meg was playing good Sveta was out of place

Russian rock-singer Zemfira was watching Sveta on court and Sveta had a meeting with her

In post match interview Sveta was surprised how Meg started the match

Seems Sveta was too confident that she would win easly

Sveta and Zemfira, how cool is that :hearts: my 2 favorite russians :)

Jun 6th, 2007, 01:45 PM
Sveta has only reached a slam semi 2 times. So her record in slam quarters is not good.

Jun 10th, 2007, 07:11 PM
Just one or two loose ends from Roland Garros:-

Sveta has obviously lost some points, and may be lower in the rankings when they come out tomorrow. I wonder if both Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic will have leap-frogged her? Maybe at Eastbourne she'll actually be seeded lower than the 3 that she was at RG.

The score in her Q/F against Ana was interesting, as the Wimbledon final of 2001 (Venus beat Justine) was very similar, something like 61 36 60, and again that match lasted under 90 minutes despite being 3 sets.

Jun 10th, 2007, 07:33 PM
Well in Wimbledon she can grab points with a good showing according her ranking.I remember last year she lost too early ;)

Jun 11th, 2007, 09:17 PM
Yes in the 3rd round vs Na Li.. a frustrating defeat again!

I hope she willn't be injured any more.
