The contestants in the Miss Universe competition have been showing off some bizarre dresses designed to reflect their country's culture.
Thousands of spectators packed the Reforma Avenue in Mexico City to watch the striking, beautiful and in some cases strange costumes, worn by the hopefuls to win the beauty pageant, which will be held in the Mexican capital on May 28.
The loudest cheer was unsurprisingly for Miss Mexico, or Rosa Maria Ojeda, whose dress was decorated with images of Mexican food, including corn on the cob and tropical fruit, alongside symbols of ancient Indian cultures.
Miss USA (Rachel Smith) who wore a very creative female Elvis Presley costume, was booed by the audience, due to the unstable political relations between Mexico and the United States.
Such situation reminded the incident which happened during the Miss Universe 1993 contest when Miss USA (Kenya Moore) was booed during the whole telecast until she was voted off by the judges.
A dreadlocked Miss Jamaica, or Zahra Redwood, the first Rastafarian to compete for the beauty prize, went for a reggae theme with a T-shirt of singer Bob Marley.
And Inga Skaya wore an ice hockey uniform to represent Canada's favorite sport.
Several contestants from seafaring nations selected marine themes. Miss Denmark, Zaklina Sojic, dressed like a mermaid. And Miss Dominican Republic, Massiel Taveras, shouldered two dolphins and sea plants.
There was some protests, with one group of women wearing white dresses covered in fake blood trying to draw attention to towns or states in Mexico where women have been raped or killed, in some cases with alleged involvement by police or soldiers.
give her the damn trophy already

According to several sources the award will be decided on audience applause 9 give it to mexico already) it is important to note however the national costme, congeniality, or photogenic contests have no bearing on winning the overall pageant as their scores do not factor in.
Looking to stay afloat amidst the world's most beautiful women Australia's Miss Universe contestant Kimberley Busteed has selected a lifesaver's outfit to parade as the national costume.
Not noted as the the most elegant of the competition's many segments, the national costume segment is at the least guaranteed to get the attention of the judges.
Kimberley's selected lifesaver look in the year that marks the centenary of surf lifesaving Down Under combines a red one-piece swimsuit, a red and yellow cap and a lifesaver's flag in what critics have called "ugly" and "silly".
The contest will be held in Mexico City on May 28.
(The judges obviously don't know about our culture and called ugly and silly is insulted!)

What's she doing with Hantuchova's two trophies? ;)

Waht upsets me the most is that these costumes aren't really always representative of the Nation. I guess I am a traditionalist but a traditional native american dress would be much better for Miss USA rather than a messed up Elvis costume.

how many times can Miss Usa get away with wearing a native American dress? I like the Elvis theme he is an American Icon for better or worse.

oh and Rock & Roll was created in America and Elvis is the king of R&R so on that level it works as well. ;)
I am rooting for Miss Indonesia (Agni Pratisha) to be in TOP 10 or even TOP 5 :)

Some of this custome aren't even national customes. I don't think Anglo countries have them thats why they put whatever crap they can think off.
:tape: :tape:
Once again, you don't know about our culture ;) Lifesaving is the big part of our country and is marked 100 years this year plus she's a lifesaver! ;)

I don't mind Australia's costume. I prefer the basic sexy outfits then the over the top outfits with balls and glitter and all that jazz.
She could have worn a sexier swimming costume but then it wouldn't be a traditional life saving outfit.

My Top Five Favourite:
1. South Africa
2. Australia
3. U.S.A
4. Cyprus
5. Canada
I like India's but it's too basic and something most Indian girls would wear.

I think it's an immigration official, playing up their tourism potential. That said, it was tacky as fuck :o.
BTW I love USA and Canada. Really cool looking :). And Japan rocks :hearts:.

I hear Miss Canada was all the rage. I mean why?
:p
I think it's safe to say that last place went to either Croatia, Italy, or Bahamas :o seems like they left everyone cold :rain: Australia was a bit bland.
My uncle says people are exagerating about the boos though, he says some "mocosos" (I think that would mean brats) were there to create trouble. Poor miss USA either way  Now watch her make the top 3
Miss India was well liked for such a quiet custome. My uncle says there is an elegance about her.:hearts: *I think I want her to win *
Miss Colombia, Miss Dominican Republic, Miss Brazil, Miss South Africa, Miss Angola(some funny moment about her dress) , Miss Spain, Miss Indonesia, Miss Canada, and Miss Paraguay were big hits with the crowd. Miss Venezuala didn't get a very good reaction  The crowd expects such high standars from Miss Venezuela than anything short of amazing...
that's all I was told

Japan wins Riyo Mori, a professional ballet dancer, won the Miss Universe crown at the annual event held at the National Auditorium in Mexico City.
The 1st runner-up was Brazil's Natalia Guimaraes, 2nd runner-up was Venezuela's Ly Jonaitis, 3rd runner-up was Korea's Honey Lee and the 4th Runner-up was USA's Rachel Smith. See the Official Results (http://globalbeauties.com/universe/2007/u07_results.htm).
The glamour of the event came to a halt when the audience at the auditorium started booing Miss USA (Rachel Smith), a complete embarrassment for the host country.
It was a repeat of what happened in Miss Universe 1993. This time, hostess Vanessa Minnillo even had to intervene so the audience would stop booing the American beauty.
In addition, Miss USA fell during the evening gown competition. With all that, Miss USA remained calm and reached the top 5 (deservingly so!).
Completing the Top 10, were the delegates from Tanzania, Angola, Nicaragua, Mexico and India.
The top 15 finalists were the delegates from Denmark, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Slovenia and Thailand.
Philippines took the Miss Photogenic Award for the 3rd consecutive year, while Miss China took the Miss Congeniality prize.
The semifinalists' group was diverse, and there were some surprises like Czech Republic and Ukraine (although experts mentioned that they would be some of Donald Trump's picks).
Nicaragua placed in the top 10 for the first time in history, after having a Top 15 placement in 1977. Korea's placement was the first since 1988.
Tanzania and Slovenia got their first placements in Miss Universe history.
In what was a historical judging outcome, only four latinas (including Brazil) placed in the Top 15, unlike other years where they dominated the groups of finalists. Judges finally realized that there IS beauty outside the Americas.
The Best National Costume Award was not announced. Apparently 2007 is the last time delegates are required to bring a national costume.
Japan won its second Miss Universe title, 48 years after it's first victory.
Congratulations to the beautiful (and very fashionable!) new Miss Universe!
