I think Maria has entered Istanbul.
There is a news article about her on the official site (which I cant read due to it being in Turkish :p ) and Maria mentioned it during that Sochi thing. I'd think there must be an announcement or something in English soon if she is.

Anyone able to read Turkish? http://www.istanbulcup.com/TrAnasayfa.aspx

Dan23, I guess that article is about her withdrawal from Rome, nothing more. She's not in the entry list yet, but... who knows?

It's more probable to see her play Strasbourg than Istanbul

Maria Croft

 thatís just wishful thinking, even if she entered Istanbul or Strasbourg she would only end up withdrawing anyway, we will probably see her back in action at Roland Garros at the earliest.

i think i heard on eurosport yesterday that if she's fit enough she'll play a tournament the week after rome, probably istanbul! i hope she can play, even though its not a high profile event its a extra whole week of rest after missing rome and a whole load of matches prior to RG!! even if she loses early on at least she'll be more used to the clay before the french begins...

Maria will finally play her 1st clay event of 2007 at the Istanbul Cup in Istanbul, Turkey which begins on May 21st.* Maria is flying to the Turkish capital today.

Maria will then head to Paris for the 2nd Grand Slam of the year at Roland Garros which begins 1 week later.

Here is what Maria has to say about coming back on tour: "It is so good to be finally getting ready for tournament play.* Things with the injury are going well and am looking forward to making my debut appearance in Istanbul where East meets West, then heading to Paris again".

(posted in GM, quoted from her official site)

Matt Cronin On Sharapova

Sharapova will play Instanbul, Roland Garros
After two days of practicing with no pain in her sore shoulder, Maria Sharapova hopped on a plane on Wednesdsay and headed to the Roland Garros warm-up tournament in Istanbul. Sharapova, who hasn't competed since Miami, is also planning on playing the French Open.

Sharapova is traveling without her touring coach Michael Joyce, who is still at home attending to family business after the recent death of his mother. Joyce will rejoin Sharapova at the grass-court tournament in Birmingham in June. Joyce's close friend Eric Basica will serve as Sharapova's hitting partner in the interim.
Only 2 days? :o Not the best preparation....surely it cant be fully healed

Andy.
May 17th, 2007, 12:19 AM
Who knows she still has another possible 4 or 5 days before she actually would have to play so hopefully it wont flare up again.

Well, this might not be the accurate number. I would take that number with a very light grain of salt. I don't think journalists know any more than the rest of us sometimes, just the basics.

True...I realise that but Maria said last week that it was still giving her trouble then.
Hopefully it wont be like the nagging upper body injury she had for much of 2005 which at times appeared to go away and would then reappear just as quickly after a few matches. Maybe im being too pessimistic...im just pumped for Maria to be back in action and have a good run with fitness for the rest of the year so she can kick ass again like she should be.

Maria will be playing some good clay players but she could very well win her first clay tournament here! forgott one excuse in case of an early exit : at least you had some match practice Maria ,but this only works if she only goes deeper in this tournie , losing in second round and only one match played that doesn't mean a lot of practice before RG so try to win as many matches as you can so that the excuse will work [this is my weird way of saying good luck for today ]

Great to see Masha win her first match on clay - and after such a long break! :bounce:

Here's a report from tobi, posted on GM.

At the first set Masha didnt start confidently, she was tentative with her shots and had some problems especially with her backhand cross court shot. She didnt go for her shots.

Despite that after coming back from 1-3 down to 3-3 and until 2-0 second set she really played some good tennis, made Pironkova run side to side all over again.

At the other hand Pironkova who hit 9 winners in the first set hit 7 of them in first 5 games. When she put her first serve in she rallied well with Masha but she was helpless with her second serve :help: It is still so weak,Masha ate them as a return winner or won the point two shots later anyway.

But after 6-4 2-0 Masha started to play badly again, she had a period where she lost 10 points in a row,all on her own error, even she dumped couple of Pironkova 2nd serves to the bottom of the net :tape: Pironkova though didnt play that good either she just run and run and put the ball back, one fact she had to wait until 10th game for her first outright winner in the 2nd set

After 5-6 15-30 where Masha's backhand just clipped the line for point,it was all Masha who won with her experience.

Tiebreak scoring was like below

1-0 - Masha BH winner
2-0 - Masha unreturnable serve
3-0 - Masha unreturnable serve
4-0 - Tzveti UE
5-0 - Masha BH winner
6-0 - Exactly same BH,plum on the line
6-1 - Masha DF
7-1 - Tzveti UE

Other facts about Masha, she didnt slide as you expect, she moved ok at the baseline but she was just slow to react to short balls, missed few sitter volleys too :help: No problem on drive volley & smash as you can imagine

One more strange fact neither girl played this match as a clay match,Tzveti moved well but didnt slide too.And there were 1 (one) drop shot in the match :tape:

The day's only second-round match saw the tournament's top seed Sharapova take on Bulgaria's Pironkova. The Russian No.1, making her first appearance on Tour since recovering from a shoulder injury, was far from at her best against her teenage opponent, but she did just enough to take her place in the quarterfinals, recording a 64 76(1) victory.

The 20-year-old Russian was erratic throughout, squandering a 5-3 second set lead and coming within two points of being forced into a third set, before finally clinching the match on the tie-break. Nevertheless, Sharapova has not hit a ball in anger since her last 16 defeat in Miami and was understandably pleased to have got her clay court season off to a winning start.

"I think considering that it was my first competitive match in 7-8 weeks and that I've just had one of the biggest injuries of my career, it wasn't too bad." said Sharapova. "She's a very good player who's had some big wins in her career, so it was a nice test for me."

"It was a difficult match and I was not expecting much from myself because I just came back from one of my worst injuries. But it was good to beat a good player,"

"I, of course, did not feel 100 percent. It was not my best performance," Sharapova said. "But I hope I will get better as I play more games... And I hope I will stay healthy."

The next match is going to be sooo tough. Masha is going to have to use all her mental toughness and fight to get through this match. I have faith in her, good luck Masha.

Davai Masha.

Aga will be a tough test, but if Maria's playing well, she won't have too many weapons to hurt her.

Except for her dropshot. :p

Masha eats up dropshots these days :p unless they are exceptionally good!

Davai Maria :clap2:

 the seeds are struggling
Venus already out, Patty pulled out today too and Dementieva is down a set. If Maria can get by today she could end up with a couple more matches to play before going to Paris....

For those interested....Maria hit her first ace down at 182kmh....thats right up there as far as Maria's serve speed goes so it looks like shes regained most of the power back.

Maria won the 1st set 6-2
Her 1st serve is exceptional.....luckily.....because she didnt win a single point out of 6 on her 2nd serve :( including 4 DF's.
It seems her ground strokes are going well though!

yes maria won! i got worried at the start of the third but maria did well to hold on to the first service game and after that she was ok. i think from watching the live scores her serve decreased in pace as the match went on. well at least maria got through! good luck in the semis and lets hope her shoulder is getting abck to 100% :)

Good win for Maria eariler today. :clap2: I expected it to be a tough match for her and she really rebounded in a great way in the third set. This was a pretty good test for Maria today to she where she`s at and she did a good job of getting the win. She still needs to improve on some things, but it`s better she work on it in Istanbul than in RG.

I'm so happy with this hard fought victory.
Only do I think it's worrying that she said that her shoulder was still hurting.
I really hope she's not stretching too far with this tournament.
I'm getting anxious now for a possibility that she can reach the final. Knock on wood! Very hard!

Maria Sharapova has moved into the semifinals at the Istanbul Cup. (AI Wire Photo)

Maria Sharapova is heating up before the upcoming French Open, she beat Agnieszka Radwanska 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 Thursday to advance to the semifinals of the Istanbul Cup.

"I’m happy for seeing my shoulders are healthy," said Sharapova, who missed two tournaments this year with a right-shoulder injury. "It’s good for me to play tough matches like this."

She’ll be meeting Aravane Rezai, who rallied to beat Meghann Shaughnessy of the United States 1-6, 6-1, 6-4.The 62nd-ranked Rezai, who ousted Venus Williams in the second round, is seeking her first WTA Tour title.

Sharapova is gunning for her first tournament victory of 2007.

So, she's saying here her shoulders are healthy... I'm confused :help:

Hmmmm... The article I posted above quotes her as saying her shoulders are healthy, but a quote from her interview says the following

"My shoulder is still aching a little bit. Let's see how I will do tomorrow," she said of Friday's semifinal against France's Aravane Rezai, whom she described as "a young player who has nothing to lose against me".

Is there a transcript of the press conference? There is a series of photos in the photo thread that made me wonder if someone upset her---or if she was in pain at the time. She did not look like she usually does---and I don't care about the hair---I am talking about facial expressions.

Oh come on, some of you can't believe that Maria was giving her everything in this match. She was hitting shots of all variety today be it dropshots, moonballing etc. Obviously Maria decided not to cause further damage to her shoulder.

was there a clock on any of her serves? Was she serving slower speeds with less accuracy than in her first two matches?

May 25th, 2007, 07:53 PM
I think this match doesn't matter. She played some tennis to get used to the clay court, that's enough for now.:wavey:

Andy.
May 25th, 2007, 11:43 PM
Well it looks as though Maria was just going through the motions and trying some new things out there. I hope thats not because her injury has flaired up again. At least she has some matches under her belt now and she will have some extra time to rest ahead of RG.

May 26th, 2007, 08:13 AM
I actually think this loss is for the better and not for the worse because if she won and played another match that would cut her preparation time for RG.

That sounds hopeful on both counts.

And it probably wouldn't have been that wise for her to go into a gruelling final with Demented a day before RG. If she could have won Istanbul "no sweat" she probably would have gone for it, but not to exhaust herself and risk worsening her shoulder for a minor Tier 3

Same here, I think she wasn't ready or just didn't want to to give 100%, especially not a week before a slam.
