i really hope she plays... i think she needs 2, just because of all the problems it will be gud for her to get any last minute nerves/issues/rust out of the way before a grand slam... all players should really play a warm up event before a slam, including maria! i just hope the shoulder and the hamstring are cured!!! i think we should forget about the clay and just believe that maria can win this one too!!!

Yeah, me too... But I'm so unsure about Rome... Just week left, and we still don't know anything about her condition and about her training process. Where is she now, in USA or maybe somewhere in Europe? What do you think?

maybe she's in berlin and will make a wildcard appearance, like mauresmo did in dubai!!! lol! imagine, that would be awesome!!!

I dont really expect Maria to play but itll be good if she does. I hope it wont be too early for her to return from this pretty serious injury.
In normal circumstances Maria would probably have already been in Europe for a week or 2 practicing but im not sure if that is the case this year. Waiting for her to make a new doodle.... :p

I would be surprised if Maria would actually play Rome, I really hope she does though, she could really use it now to get some practice and confidence back :)

Yeah Im not massively confident she will play. Maybe playing Istanbul would be an easier way of getting back into competition and it would give her an extra week to recover.

According to GM Maria pulled out of Rome. I know Masha doesn't like clay but she needs to practice on it so she doesn't suffer another embarrassing loss :o at the French Open this year like she had last year to Safina. Or maybe she needs a new medical team. One thing is for sure she never recovers quickly from injury and young people like Masha are supposed to have strong recovery powers. Sadly it seems Maria is the exception to that rule. :(

i just hope she plays RG... if not that would be the first slam she's missed!! sadly im just praying for a kind draw that would let her get to the second week!

will she be the number 2 seed this year? or can someone move up the rankings before RG and push her to 3rd? ie. Mauresmo/Kuznetsova

Even if she does play RG, I can't see her doing much

Last year she came in to RG with nothing an still made the fourth round and was sooooo close to making the quarters. If she plays I wouldnt count her out. Plus she loves playing as an underdog, which is what she will be. Im sure with a few extra weeks of practice she will play RG. Does anyone think she will play one of the smaller tournaments before RG.

From Maria's website

I am going to have to pull out of Rome today, my body is slowly getting better but in no way will I be ready to play in Rome. It is such a shame because I like playing in Rome and I have to pull out two years in a row. I just want to let my fans know that I am doing everything possible to be ready to play the French Open. I am taking one day at a time and I will keep you updated on my progress. Thank you for supporting me during these tough times, it means more to me then when I win tournaments.

This isnt just a minor fiddly injury...its quite serious for a girl of Maria's stature. I think her recovery time has been quite reasonable in the past...if anything shes played a bit when underdone. The exception being the longtime rib problem which took nearly 12 months to be correctly diagnosed and treated.

I would be surprised if Maria is ready to play RG with her shoulder at close to 100% strength.

I don't see Masha playing any other tournament before RG.
So I think the only clay tournament she's gonna play will be RG and I wish her good luck with that :yeah:

Some people in the GM are acting like Maria is scared to play or cant play on clay :o
Shes only played 4 matches on clay in the last 2 years. Not much to go by. Before that she was the only player to make the QF's at RG in both 2004 and 2005 and has beaten 2 former RG finalists on the surface. If one year she leaves Miami in 1 piece she'll prove again that she can play well on clay.

Not trying to sound negative, and i know injuries do occur, but my gosh, this is getting really old.

Some of the things she said reminded me of what Chris Carpenter, former Cy Young winning pitcher for the cardinals was saying. They had to do arthroscopic surgery---he will be out until mid-august.

On the up-side-----I do not know much about medical stuff.

people are acting like when maria steps on to the clay she plays so badly its like she's playing on ice!! its really not that bad IMO and i think if she can play RG she will and could be really dangerous as she'll have little to no expectations of realistically winning so she use her great underdog skills again...

although im disapointed she's not playing rome and may not play RG, its not like 2007 is her final year, so i wont be too upset if she misses one grand slam...

I couldn't agree more...missing ONE GS is not the end of the world. After she gets 100% I expect her to finish the year strong

Actually it is ! Just try to think that if you were going to the Us Open (for example) to see her and knowing that finally she might don't play it you will be verry upset !! :o

I must say, I really want her to have a good clay season (injury free) next year, it seems like it has been forever since she played outside of Roland Garros on clay.
