Good luck to Makiri. I really hope she can somehow return to good form in Berlin.

Maria's first round match is against Li Na.

However, if Maria is SMART, she'll know that Li Na will make alot of errors in any match even when she's on and will try and keep the ball in play.

Li Na has been on shit form too, who knows!

Well, Maria looked very good and quite confident today, so who knows.... She might surprise us all!

What do you mean with "today"?

Today as in this day, May 5th, 2007.
I saw her walking on the venue. I guess she had just arrived in Berlin, because she was walking around in plain clothes (she was hardly recognizable BTW) and making arrangements of some kind.
Maybe I should have asked if I could take a picture, but I was too baffled at the moment.

Best of luck to Maria. I hope she's not going to try to slug it out against Li from the baseline. If she plays smart and uses her variety, she should be able to coax a lot of errors from her opponent.

please Makiri you need to beat Li to get the year on track

Get off the god damn baseline and use your variety!!

Still Na Li is good player and Maria is in huge slump not the best draw if you ask me , If Na Li game is on she will blow Makiri off the court considering her recent form it could only go close if Makiri playis his best and really smart but I am not sure if she capable to do so

Poor Maria.   I'm still well proud of her, the way she saved so many break points in the fifth game of the 2nd set, and went on to win it - someone with less character would've folded there and then. :)
Oh well, on to Rome next week.

DAVAI, MAKIRI !!!

I hope Maria takes a lot of confidence from that match against Li. It was always going to be a tough one and, OK she didnt win, but she fought harder than she has done for some time.

She is still in the Doubles with Ana in Berlin, so a bit more real time on Clay.

Good luck Maria!!!

im not comparing Makiri with Sveta but if u remember in 2005 Svetlana had a very difficult year, she was losing to everyone. It was hard to watch. I really hope that Makiri could get over this slump too and starts improving.

May 7th, 2007, 07:56 PM
Well, I don't really know if Makiri can draw confidence from taking a set from Li Na. It depends on how the both of them were playing in that set.

Li Na could've just been spraying errors. It's hard to take confidence from someone else's doing. I wish you the best, Makiri! I'll always believe in you. :)

And if Maria has to have a terrible slump once in her career, at least it's during the clay season where she probably wouldn't do that well even if she was playing ok. The only problem is, of course, dropping down the rankings, not being seeded, worse draws etc. Even having to qualify. :help:
Let's hope her and Ana go far, anyway!

Weather permitting, they'll be fifth and last on court 2 tomorrow. :p

I`m sad to see Makiri lose today , but at the same time i`m not surprised by it given how well Na Li has played this year. The only bright spot is that at least Makiri won a set against her. Hopefully this can somehow get her headed in the right direction.

I seriously doubt that. Her body language through the entire match and especially in the third set was clear enough.
She totally lacks confidence.

Has Maria addressed her recent slump through interview or press conference?
Has she said why she is lacking confidence, in poor form, or needing a full time coach?

I think everyone is feeling little helpless as Maria keeps falling and seemingly nothing is being done about it.

Why doesn't she just get some advice from Igor? He knows how to play on clay. :)

Your right mate! She is heading down the rankings fast, and if Team Kirilenko cant stop the slide, its WC's and Qualies for Masha :tears: They offered Nigel Sears a lucrative 1 year contract, but he opted for the LTA Coaching post.

I just hope she can come out of this slide soon.

Come on Masha!!! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
