Uh-oh. Anna could be in trouble if she's not fully fit. Stosur didn't have too many problems when Anna had flu in Linz.

May 5th, 2007, 07:30 PM
and Safarova in the 2nd round can be VERY tough also!! .... what's up with all the super tough draw for Anna lately??

Jirku
May 5th, 2007, 08:34 PM
she's a better player then stosur and safarova, i think she can beat both, would be fun a 3th round against former doublepartner vesnina, but im sure she will lose from safina.

Depends if Anna is 100 % fit from her injury

Stosur should not be a ton of trouble on clay, but Safarova could be extremely dangerous

AGREEEEE!!!! but I guess she's busy traveling from Warsaw to Berlin, and busy trying to get fit for Berlin as well! ;)

Spiritof42

Her webmaster must be busy as well. He has yet to update the tournaments page with results from Fed Cup and Warsaw.

It would perhaps be wiser to withdraw unless her serving arm/shoulder is 100% fit. She's got some points to defend in Berlin, but I don't want her to worsen her injury at this time of year.

Nicole withdrew but not soon enough for Anna to take her seeded position in the draw. It's gone to 17th seed Garbin. Bit sucky for those higher ranked who don't get the first round bye. At least Anna won't have to play until Tuesday (and if it stops raining).

What a fight from Anna, it was very tough to follow the match from the scoreboard, such a rollercoaster, was worried about her shoulder but in the end a sigh of relief. Next up Lucie, another tough opponent, hope that Anna fights like today, if needed :) Btw that pink dress didnīt look very good on her, maybe Adidas should make a brand new outfit for her, now that Anna K has left Adidas, Anna C might take her place ;)

 Holy tie-break Batman, that was a close one!

Total points won:
Anna: 103
Stosur: 107

Usually (I'd say at least 90% of the time) the player who wins more points ends up winning the match. I think that stat shows how narrowly Anna escaped defeat. She fought hard, under tough conditions, and deserves a lot of credit. :worship: Following this kind of match on the live scoreboard is absolutely nerve-wracking. Anna is not very good on clay. No way she should have to struggle so much against Stosur on clay. Glad she fought and pulled out the win but I don't see her going very far this week.I totally disagree. I think Anna will be excellent on clay.
Clay hurts players with bad movement who get lots of free points on their serve, like Davenport.
Anna should do very well on clay. She moves well and plays smart.
Last year in Warsaw she beat Jankovic, Ivanovic and Hantuchova.
This year she was playing well and had an injury.

Wintermute
May 8th, 2007, 08:39 PM
Clay is statistically Anna's worst surface. But I agree with GL that it also neutralises an opponent's big serves and there is no reason why Anna can't have a lot of success on clay. She actually served more aces than Stosur today (a couple more DFs too).

Anna should be good on clay but right now she isn't. Stosur should be an easy win on clay for Anna not a marathon match. She really needs to improve a lot on clay before she is threat at Roland Garros.

I don't get it.... according to their style of play, Lucie is a big hitter, which shouldn't be a good clay court player, but Anna plays smart, and has good movement, should be good on clay.... or maybe Anna just doesn't know how to use her game on clay?

goldenlox

Remember, Anna went back to Moscow after Warsaw, and went to Berlin on Monday. She has a bad shoulder. Anna felt a sharp pain against Jankovic and saw a therapist in Moscow.

Wintermute
May 9th, 2007, 06:49 PM
:( Bad luck Anna.

I kinda expected this result too. She's not fully fit and on her worst surface against a very decent big-hitting player.

I've not seen enough of Anna on clay to know exactly what doesn't work for her but I imagine that the slow, high-bouncing surface exposes the weakness on her serve. Plus she's relatively short and I know she's said before that she prefers the lower bouncing balls of a fast court instead of hitting way above shoulder height.

On a more positive note she has provisionally gone back up to #10 because Nadia is defending her champion's points.

goldenlox
May 9th, 2007, 08:21 PM
She's tall enough to handle clay bounces. Justine is shorter. And a strong serve is hurt by clay.

cosmoose
May 9th, 2007, 08:34 PM
On paper, clay ought to be Anna's best surface.
Slow clay negates opponent's strong serve and ground strokes.
Slow clay also gives Anna more time to angle her shots and chase down opponent's strokes.

But it seems like clay is Anna's worst surface. She said she prefers hard courts and wants to win the US Open the most.
Maybe Anna is a closet American! :hearts: :worship:

:bigcry: :bigcry: :bigcry: But this is only Anna's 2nd loss to a lower-ranked player this year. Also, I suspect she still isn't 100% fit physically. Still, looking at the stats, it seems to have been a pretty close match. Anna lost the 1st set on a single break point. Safarova won almost 90% of her 1st serve points and faced only 1 break point in the entire match. She can serve big, even on clay.

hu2891601
May 11th, 2007, 12:18 AM
well, I never consider Lucie as a top player, she has big wins, but way too inconsistent.. like losing to Azarenka last week, and Safina today when leading a set, and she has a great H2H record against safina also. And that's why she usually loses the next round after beating a top 10 player. (ex. lost the next round after beating Henin and Mauresmo, and also after a great performance yesterday against Anna)

I'd rather Anna has a consistent game, and bigger wins will just follow. (just imo, no offense to Lucie fans)

goldenlox
May 11th, 2007, 12:23 AM
I didn't see this match, but I know Lucie is streaky and is capable of beating top 10 players.
It's important that Anna is healthy for the majors. Then, if she has a good draw, like the AO, she'll be playing big matches in week 2.
