After you read it I think you are going to think like me!!

Do you think Nicole Vaidisova want to copy Maria Sharapova (I'm sorry for her fans but its what I think)?!?

Because on Nicole's birthday party...her 2007 US Open dress is really similar to Maria's 2005 US Open dress.http://img444.imageshack.us/my.php?image=imagem2tx5.jpg
And this year US Open Nicole is going to wear 2 dresses like Maria did last year. One dress for day and the other for night.

In Sidney and in the Australian Open 2007 Nicole wore ribbon in her hair like Maria did in US Open 2006.http://img227.imageshack.us/my.php?image=imagem3ru1.jpg

I really want Maria plays with Nicole...just to see who is better!!

There are definatly some similarities in the paths they are taking its sort of like Nicole is using Masha as a blue print, I doubt it but it does look like it. I know its superficial but I dont want her to take the fame and fortune away from Masha, I want Maria to stay the star of the WTA.

The thing that really upsets me is that Maria got well-deserved attention AFTER she won Wimbledon. Yes Nicole has gotten to a couple of GS semis, but she's never even won a Tier I or II title. She definitely has the potential to burn up the competition and have an amazing career, but she doesn't deserve this much attention just yet. I didn't like the attention Kournikova got and I don't like this...

Course she doesn't want to copy her ! That sucks :o
She said that she had enough with the comparasions we make between them two... Even if she wanted to copy Maria, I don't think that (even if I do love Nicole too) she will never be like the golden girl ! ;)

The question is really who or what is trying to make Vaidisova over into a new Masha. From listening to her interviews, I certainly don't think it's Nicole.

But if you're taking a fat check from a huge international sponsor, you don't have much say in the image they want you to project. Whoever signs Nicole to a big endorsement deal is going to have a huge financial interest in having the public confuse her with Sharapova--at least until Nicole wins a grand slam tournament.

Yes.

Well, I think that answers the original question. Nicole, might not want to be compared to Sharapova, but her handlers now that marketing her like Sharapova will bring in the big money deals.

She will never be greater than Masha!!! She hasn't even reached a final in a tournament Tier II or higher!!!

You can't say she will never be greater than Maria as Nicole is also very young and has many more years to maker her own impact on tennis. Although I would obviously prefer Nicole to not surpass Maria, you can't say it will never happen at this stage in their careers.

Even though she denies it, Nicole has always tended to copy Masha in looks, fashion, tennis style - even her earrings!

Agreed. It's a little tidbit that so many people forget, fans and haters alike that Maria pre Wimbledon 04 didn't get much hype. Many people were starting to get turned off by Anna because the press she got was really not worthy when you considered her on court achievements. As a result, Maria was kept at a distance by a lot of sports journalists who looked at Maria, with her blond hair, long legs, and Russian surname and thought "Not again. We've been through this before. We're not getting fooled this time." As a result her winning Wimbledon, beating out the likes of Davenport and Serena Williams along the way, was a total shock. And THAT was when the sponsorship deals and press poured in.

I think that's what these press people and marketing companies keep forgetting when it comes to athletes: that some of the biggest and most accomplished stars are the ones who came out of nowhere, when people least expect it. No amount of marketing in the world is going to make an athlete a great champion. Yes Nicole could be a great champion in the future. But if she is meant to be a great champion then she will become one in her own time. Her marketing team needs to back off and let the results speak for themselves for a while.
