Yeah, I'm not sure whether to cheer for Slovakia or Czechia (:p).

But when it's Nicole vs. Daniela, I will be 50/50.

Well, I hope Nicole will get some support from her Czech girls.

Please win another match, girls:tape: :help:

Vs Italia AND France, Nicole won her two Singles, but the others girls lost both Singles and Doubles:tape:

I love Daniela too much to cheer against her, that's simply impossible. It's a shame these two teams had to meet each other. Even more disappointing is that they could have played for one country if it wouldn't had been for some stupid political reasons and economical reforms. :fiery:

Well Nicole will need to play a lot better here than she did in Charleston. :tape: The good thing I suppose that she has never lost a set to Daniela (leads H2H 3-0).

It will be interesting to see how the tie plays out since Lucie has been pretty good this year and now Domi has been getting some nice wins.

A big thanks to Corpuscle for translating Fed Cup news and interview from today:

During tomorrow Czech FED CUP team will fly to Slovakian capital city - Bratislava with determination for DERBY - SLOVAKIA vs. CZECH REPUBLIC. All Czech players who were nominated are healthy and say: "We believe in win!" Under Alex Kodat's coaching our players will try to reach WORLD GROUP I - Play-offs again.

Czech team will introduce with new captain. After Petera's resignation the Czech federation deals with Nicole Vaidisova's stepfather Alex Kodat.

"They contacted me only by telephone we officially deal with Alex only few minutes ago," announced president of Czech federation Ivo Kaderka on the press conference in the afternoon.

Alex Kodat did with Nicole Vaidisova reach the top of women's tennis and Czech representation wants it too. "Alex Kodat is absolute professional," praise president of federation new captain. "I enjoy in matches and I believe that players will win them."

Alex is optimistic too. "We will do all for win," Kodat encourages team before duel who said who will play in this duel. "I suppose that Nicole and Lucie will play singles. Next two players - Iveta Benesova and Barbora Zahlavova-Strycova will play doubles."

No.1 in Czech FED CUP team, Nicole Vaidisova, arrived at Prague in today's morning. She passed all exams at school and then she started to train for the duel against Slovakia.

"I'm happy that FED CUP's complete and we have new captain and all players are glad," said Vaidisova with calm atmosphere in team. She enjoys the duel and believes that Czech team will play in WORLD GROUP I Play-offs again and will finally reach WORLD GROUP I. "Certainly we all believe in win and we can win it."

Next singles player Lucie Safarova was happy that she was nominated to singles. "I expected it but it's great confirmation," she said after Kodat's words. She only admires Slovakian No.1 Daniela Hantuchova.

"Hantuchova has great form so it won't be easy in Bratislava," admitted opponent's qualities. "But their second player for singles is Cibulkova, I haven't meet her yet," admitted Safarova who said good news: "I'm 100% healthy and ready for matches."

Iveta Benesova will probably play only doubles match but she isn't sad because of it. "I think it's right decision," don't discuss with captain about it. "We want to win and we will do maximum," confirmated Iveta.

-----

How don't sleep after long journey over the ocean? School's exams! Nicole Vaidisova flew from New York and next time after flight she had to profess to her professor. When she was home, she studied for school's exams. But then she again training tennis for 100%. At the weekend she will play hard matches of FED CUP in Bratislava.

How do you feel after flight from America?

Pretty well. Today was very exacting. We flew to Prague at 6:20 AM and I had to be at school at 8AM. I did all exams.

Can you tell us from which subjects?

I did exams from CZECH, GERMAN, ENGLISH and MATH.

We don't have to ask what did you get from English?

I got A from languages and B from Math.

How did you feel - do exams after night flight?

It's true that I couldn't sleep on the plane. I tried to learn something but maybe I didn't do it too choicely so I didn't learn something new.

Back to tennis. How do you feel after early loss in Charleston?

I have to expect that I won't optimally win and any loss will come. But I played very well recently so I'm not worry about this loss. I'm optimistic for Bratislava, I'm in good form.

Your coach and stepfather leads FED CUP team. What do you feel - much responsibility for yourself and him?

We will see what he will think out on the chair(laugh). Alex knows all about me so maybe a little advantage for me.

How do you value your opponents? What about Daniela Hantuchova...

Hantuchova is recently in very good form. If I will want to win this match I must play my the best tennis. But it's team event and we have to win 3 points and it isn't important who will win them.

Your teammate Lucie Safarova said that she doesn't know Slovakian No.2 Cibulkova. What about you?

I can say as Lucka - I don't know her. Maybe a little from juniors but I don't know exactly if we played and what score.

You're nominated only for singles. Is it possible that you will play doubles?

Always there's a possibility but now it's nominated. We haven't discussed about next contingencies yet.

Nicole, you're too young and you don't remember former big emulation between Czech republic and Slovakia. Do you afraid of enemy's place?

I think during Fed Cup it will be other atmosphere than on tours and it's clear that fans will fan to their players. I don't think that the atmosphere will be extreme. And if it will I will be ready.

Can you speak Slovakian?

Of course. We talks with other players on tours by Czech or Slovakian, I don't have problem.

Did you discuss about next matches? Did you provoke each other?

No, we didn't. I talked with Daniela about our the same day birthday. We talked that we will get together and celebrate our birthday.

In the end - one untennis question. Stanley Cup begins. Did you see, as big ice hockey fan, any match?

However. First matches played Tampa against New Jersey so I hope that Tampa will advance and I will see her next matches.

Will Nicole play at the olympics game in 2008?

By playing Fed Cup she is making herself eligible...

All Players Must

Make him/herself available for selection to represent his/her country in any of the International Team Championships of the Federation for two of the following years – 2005, 2006, 2007 or 2008 - provided that one of those years is either 2007 or 2008. In 2005, 2006, 2007 or 2008, a player who makes him/herself available for selection for one Tie in Davis Cup or Fed Cup will be deemed to have fulfilled the requirement for that year.

International computer rankings of 9 June 2008 will be used to select players
eligible for Direct Acceptance in singles and doubles.

Beauties ready to drop first blood in Bratislava

The Sibamac Arena in Bratislava saw a unique collection of charming beauty combined with outstanding tennis talent this morning, as it played host to the official draw ceremony for the World Group II Fed Cup by BNP Paribas first round tie between the Slovak Republic and the Czech Republic.

Held in the victory-enhancing surroundings of the National Tennis Centre, venue of a memorable Davis Cup Final in 2005, STZ Secretary General Igor Moska got the ceremony underway as he presented the honorary guests of the draw. With meet and greet over, the proceedings were handed to ITF Referee Soeren Friemel who introduced the respective teams with the help of legendary Ann Jones.

Nominations on both sides brought no surprise whatsoever , leaving the draw for this highly-anticipated clash as follows:

Daniela Hantuchova (SVK) v Lucie Safarova (CZE)
Dominika Cibulkova (SVK) v Nicole Vaidisova (CZE)
Daniela Hantuchova (SVK) v Nicole Vaidisova (CZE)
Dominika Cibulkova (SVK) v Lucie Safarova (CZE)
Daniela Hantuchova/Janette Husarova (SVK) v Iveta Benesova/Barbora Zahlavova-Strycova (CZE)

These great tennis nations have met just on one previous occasion, back in April 2000 in Bratislava, when the home team featuring the the then 17-year-old Hantuchova lost the round-robin match 1-2.

Slovakia in shape

Having advanced from the Europe/Africa Zone, the Slovak team are on promising form and currently hold a five-match winning streak in Fed Cup under the captaincy of Mojmir Mihal.

However this invincibility will be strongly challenged by the might of a highly motivated Czech team, featuring three Top 100 players, who have come unbelievably close to clinching a berth in the World Group over the last two years, bowing to their opponents in the decisive doubles rubber.

Hantuchova takes on Safarova in the opener

On paper the Slovak team seems to be the underdog, yet the bookmakers are anticipating a close contest given that the whole nation will be expecting miracles from the much-beloved Daniela Hantuchova, who will open this tie facing Czech No. 2 Lucie Safarova

"It is true that we have never faced each other in a real match, but we have practised together a couple of times, so we will see what the match brings," said Safarova.

Hantuchova remarked "First of all I have to put everything aside and focus on my game, play good tennis and do my best to win the first point for us."

Vaidisova to catch-up

The second singles rubber on Saturday will see Slovak No. 2 Dominika Cibulkova facing a hard challenge as she takes on Nicole Vaidisova, currently ranked No.8 in the world. The newly-appointed Czech captain will be relying mainly on the aptitude of his step-daughter who can pride herself on her impressive 7-1 Fed Cup singles record . „ I love playing for my country and will do whatever it takes to take the Czech republic to the next round,“ said Vaidisova.

No gift-swapping expected on Sunday

On Sunday the sold-out Sibamac Arena will eagerly expect the clash of titans as both No. 1 players will step on the court in what might be the pivotal rubber of the tie. Both players will be celebrating their birthday in a couple of days , but undoubtedly will fight for every single inch of clay to give their country the edge in this prestigious encounter.

Vaidisova struggles but comes through for Czechs
The visiting Czechs are 2-0 up against neighbours Slovak Republic in their first round Fed Cup tie thanks to battling efforts from Lucie Safarova and Nicole Vaidisova.

Vaidisova, the world No. 8, needed three sets and two hours, 27 minutes to secure a come-from-behind victory against Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova, ranked No. 123. It gave her country a 2-0 lead going into Sunday's matches, Safarova having earlier upset Daniela Hantuchova 76(1) 46 63.

Safarova outlasted the higher-ranked Hantuchova in a first set tiebreak, then withstood a mid-match comeback from the world No. 14 before carving out a victory in two hours, 37 minutes.

The Czech Republic‘s Fed Cup team grabbed the bull by the horns as it raced to a 2-0 lead over the Slovak Republic, to the great disappointment of the Slovak supporters who filled the National Tennis Centre to its capacity. The Czech’s advantage came down to Lucie Safarova‘s surprising 76(1) 46 64 victory over world No. 14 Daniela Hantuchova and Nicole Vaidisova‘s defeat of Dominika Cibulkova.

Safarova´s first Fed Cup victory silences the crowd

It took a little less than fifteen minutes to complete the first three games of the opening set between Safarova and Hantuchova. Both players, glued to the baseline, displayed great determination combined with a lovely mixture of different shots in an attempt to fight for every single ball.

Hantuchova struck the first blow, breaking Safarova in the sixth game with two confidence-boosting winners. Having served to love to confirm her break and go 5-2 ahead, everything looked bright for the Slovakian, who celebrates her 24th birthday on Monday.

Dispute over line call

With Safarova on serve, the eighth game saw the first of Hantuchova’s complaints about what she believed had been a badly officiated line call. Only later did we learn how crucial this point was in terms of shifting Hantuchova‘s momentum away.

At 30-40 on Safarova´s second serve, Daniela had a set point in her pocket. Sadly enough for the Slovak supporters her backhand return floated inches wide. From this moment Hantuchova became rather erratic and often fell victim to her own mistakes. Along with several other line call disputes, no wonder the slight favourite found herself facing the tiebreak, having failed to capitalise on three set points in the twelfth game.

“I could not find the right answer to her serve on the key moments. Every time I got closer to taking the set, she served big,” said Hantuchova.

There was no stopping the restlessly-fighting Safarova as she broke Hantuchova on her first serve in the tiebreak and galloped to take it 7-1 and the first set with it in 68 minutes.

Roof closed

No matter how down Hantuchova must have been after letting the first set slip away, she came out strong at the start of the second, breaking Safarova in the first game and never looked back as the rest of the set, played under a closed roof, went with serve. Both players admitted a change in conditions:

“I felt much better in the second set, as it had felt rather cold in the first one, and I love playing inside,” said Hantuchova.

Safarova added "I was put off my pace a bit and it took me a while to get used to it“

Hantuchova‘s fightback comes a little too late

At the start of the third set Hantuchova was startled by much-improved play from her Czech counterpart who jumped off to a 3-0 lead, breaking Hantuchova with ease in her first service game of the set. Time and time again Hantuchova could not challenge Safarova‘s service games and, at 2-5 down and 0-40 on her own service, the fate seemed sealed. Despite saving four match points to keep the match alive, Safarova prevailed taking the first rubber for her team.

“Daniela played well on my first couple of matchpoints and I knew I had to focus on my fifth one not to let her back,” said Safarova at the post-match press conference. “It is very sweet, I love playing for my country and today I managed to beat an excellent player.”

Heroics from Cibulkova not enough against struggling Vaidisova

When Nicole Vaidisova, currently ranked No. 8 in the world, served her first game of the second rubber to love, few expected what later turned out to be another nerve-racking thriller of three sets.

Loudly supported by her loyal fans, Dominika Cibulkova displayed what she later called one of the best performances of her life. “ I certainly played well, you know my coach told me not to think about the score, or who I am playing, he just told me to go there and enjoy it as much as possible.”

And so she did, breaking the erratic Vaidisova three times in the first set and jumping to a surprising lead.

The Czech No. 1, having lost the set 3-6, had to do her best to regain her composure and fight back. As her play became more consistent and steadier, the match started to swing in her own direction. Vaidisova took the second set and immediately broke the Slovak player on her first service in the final set. Cibulkova had one more moment to cherish when she broke back at 5-5 to lose her own service game seconds later again. Vaidisova faltered no more and clinched the second rubber with 36 64 75 victory.

Slovakia in difficult position

The Slovak team will be facing a hard challenge on Sunday as they need to win all the remaining rubbers, which may prove rather difficult as the Czechs do not want to experience the agony of the decisive doubles rubber for the third time in a row.

Dead rubbers complete Slovakia's wipe-out in Bratislava
The tie in Bratislava which started with great expectations from both sides turned out into a seemingly easy victory of the visiting Czech Republic team.

Shortly before lunchtime Slovak Republic's fate was in the hands Daniela Hantuchova who desperately needed to win in order to keep her team in the contest. Despite fighting hard for almost three hours, the world No. 14 had to bow to her opponent, Nicole Vaidisova for the fourth consecutive time time of playing. The Czech teenager, who like Hantuchova will be celebrating her birthday tommorrow, took the vital third point with a 62 67(1) 63 victory.

Rybarikova retires from the last singles

The remaining dead singles rubber featured Magdalena Rybarikova who was pitted against the visiting Barbora Zahlavova Strycova. The contest was over in just 36 minutes as Rybarikova, after dripping the first set with lightning speed, retired while trailing 16 12 with a right groin strain.

In the last rubber of the tie both captains nominated the expected line-up, given that Hantuchova had already completed one match earlier in the day.

The Slovak veteran Janette Husarova paired with Dominika Cibulkova to take on the newly composed Czech pair featuring Iveta Benesova and Zahlavova Strycova. The Czech team prevailed in two sets, 63 63, to complete a 5-0 defeat of Slovakia.

Small details made big difference

On paper the result of this eagerly anticipated clash might suggest that the encounter between these two small tennis nations was rather one-sided. However the score is misleading as all the live single rubbers were very open, ll of them went to three sets and the coin could have fallen on either side.

“Small details made the difference“, said Daniela Hantuchova. “If I had been more lucky at some stages in my first match, or if I had played some points differently the whole match could have been a different story.”

In retrospect the crucial rubber of the tie seems to have been the very opening one which saw the Czech No 2 Lucie Safarova defeat Hantuchova in a three set thriller.

Mojmir Mihal, the Slovak captain said, “Well if Daniela had won the first rubber she would probably have played a different game against Vaidisova, who was not in her the best shape in Bratislava.”

Vaidisova not flawless, but good enough

Mihal may have been right, Vaidisova might not have played flawless tennis here, but she was certainly good enough to win two points for the Czech team, defeating first the Cibulkova, and later proving too strong for Hantuchova.

Having beaten Hantuchova Nicole said, “Well I knew that Daniela was under big pressure as she needed to win so much. I tried to focus on my game, play well and keep my head right because I believed it would come sooner or later.“

Despite the disappointment the Slovak captain was happy with his team in overall. “I think that both our singles players came very well prepared and displayed a lot of determination and spirit. Honestly I have never seen Daniela play so well on clay and Dominika certainly did the best she could possibly have done,” said Mihal.

However Mihal was critical of certain aspects as well. “What we missed was a little more courage from Daniela at key moments, and a little more experience from Cibulkova. Yet the tie has just finished, we have to analyse the tie and get ready for play-offs.”

First victory for Czech captain

Unlike his colleague, the Czech captain was beaming with optimism. “Well we played some great tennis, and I am happy to have registered my first victory with this great team,” said Ales Kodat.

Both teams will be awaiting the Wednesday’s draw for the play-offs.

Czech Republic having assembled a strong squad who will be ready to clinch a berth in elite Top eight after two unsuccessful attempts, while Slovakia will have to fight for relegation.

From grass back to clay in about 4 days... something unseen in normal cirumstances... and then from clay to hard, that's also interesting. Hopefully it won't be a problem for our girls, although Nicole is still in London. If Medina can keep her form from claycourt season it will probably be tougher than I initially thought.

I'm not Czech, but even if Nicole were not part of the team I'd still root for them. I like Lucie too, and also the Czech girls are a lot cuter.

Idiotic CT4 Sport will show only a repeat from day 1 and nothing from day 2, according to TV programm. I don't get it. Either the programm is wrong, or they are indeed idiots. I am considering a trip to Kosice to see Hantuchova, but I haven't decided yet.

Yeah, but I was hoping for some more repeats on CT4 in case I would really travel to Kosice to see Daniela. Could you upload Nicole's and Lucie's matches if you have the necessary hardware for it?

The Spanish team would have absolutely no chance against Nicole and co. on any other surface, so I can see why they opted for clay :)

Only Nicole's matches? Could you tell your friend to record Lucka's matches as well? Now it's sure that I am traveling to Slovakia to support Daniela, but I don't want to completely miss the matches of our girls either. That would suck.

Nope, it says that she returned from Wimbledon with a serious cold and has to visit a doctor on wednesday therefore she can't fly to Spain on tuesday with rest of the team and will arrive there on thursday instead. I hope she is fine by the start of her first match.

I've just read it on i-dnes. Fuckin english weather, food or whatever caused it (nothing against England, I am just pissed off right now). 2-3 weeks without tennis pfff. One of my friends had glandular fever and it wasn't pretty. She couldn't live normally for two months, had to diet herself, eat crap, couldn't drink alcohol and had constant headaches. Just horrible. That means Nicole will drop in the ranks with San Diego points off and we may lose in Spain. Whatever, just get well soon Nicole. :fiery:

NO:sad,

From netdoctor:

What is glandular fever?

Infectious mononucleosis, commonly known as glandular fever, is a viral infection, which is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus.

The disease is, among other things, characterised by a sore throat, swollen lymph nodes and extreme fatigue.

Young people aged between 10 and 25 years are most vulnerable to this infection. The treatment is to ease the symptoms, and the illness usually passes without serious problems.
