I also would love to see Makiri make a nice deep run in this tournament. In fact i think she`s capable of winning it. It would do wonders to boost her confidence.

I agree but I'm not going to get my expectations too high. Always disappointed.

Well i`m keeping the faith with Makiri. I just feel that sooner or later she`s going to put it together.

I'm sure she'll do something great! I hope for her (it's not like if there is a lot of great great player so please makiri prooves that you deserves a place as a top player!)

She really needs to go far in this tournament. The gap between her old ranking and her new one isn't too great so a win here may get her a seed at the FO.

I'm hoping and praying that Makiri has a strong showing in this tourney considering the field. She just needs to avoid the early round exit syndrome she's been suffering from lately. Gotta keep the faith in Makiri!:yeah::angel: Good luck in Estoril!:)

Also if a lot of the top seeds pull out with injuries, she has a chance. This lower rank is the Wake-up Call for Masha. Unless she improves very quickly, Qualies and relying on WC's are what wait for her.

But I'll root for her whatever her ranking is. I know she will be back :)

Go Masha!!!

Hmmm, quite clever playing lower tier tournaments. If Lucie or Marion pull out she could be one of the Top 2 seeds meaning she could easily make it to the Final if not win the title. Hopefully she doesn't draw someone like Razzano :o

 If she draws someone like Razzano, I'll be so mad haha. I think since this is on clay, she might have some difficult times with maybe Vinci and some other players.

As for Lucie, Maria should go in there confident as they have played each other since juniors and Maria has a 3-1 record against her. Lucie had won the first encounter but the next three were all won by Little Masha. :)

cant wait for this tourny to start and see how makiri fares!

she would've had around 4 weeks to prep for this so hopefully there'll be substantial improvements :D

One poster in GM is in Estoril -

Talk about striking gold.

I went to watch Horna's practice session for a while. During a pause, his coach, who looked like one of those old Roman senators you see in films, greeted me politely, displaying that old fashioned courtesy Latin Americans still do so well.

On practice courts at the end of the corridor where I took Kirilenko's photo were several teams of girls who seemed quite poor ball strikers. I was thinking that those misogynists who go on about how women's practice sessions are an embarrassment compared to the men's might have a point, but then Kirilenko was joined by Benesova, they began hitting, and the honour of women's tennis was saved. Benesova's strokes look very quick and compact from up close, and Kirilenko's volleying is a treat. Her BH seems a mess though. Couldn't get a photo of Benesova because there was no gap on the wire fence. They were eventually forced to move out to make room for some kids and for a while shared the court with two French speaking women who seemed absolutely inept. One of them kind of looked like Kremer, but played a 1 handed BH. Her hitting partner was hopeless.

This year's qualies are total scrubsville, so I had no idea who most of the people on the practice courts were.

Thanks Goldenlox!

So her backhand was a mess in practice? :9 Hmm..At least her volleys work working. Something she needs to try in her upcoming matches.

I think she has a nice chance to make it to the quarterfinals if she's playing decent. It'll be hard against Bartoli if she makes it pass. There's also some good claycourt players in this tournament.

Best of luck, Makiri!

They lost

Dropped the 1st set 2-6 but took the 2nd 6-3, but lost the Super Tie Break 7-10

They made a good fist of it, although their serves are really awfull. Lost count of the number of 2nd serves.I dont know if they had ever played together before. Not bad though.

Marion plays Silva, and Masha plays a Croat qualie Ozegovic, which will be tough for Masha as Croats cut their teeth on red clay and she does not play well on clay.

We'll see tomorrow 11am UK time.

Hi everyone! I have not been around for a while because of my coputer problems no Im here now. I dont know what Maria has done up to now but if she is at the same situation whereI left, I dont think a huge success can come from her. As I have been insisting on that she should really get a coach as soon as posiible from the beginning, but as far as I see nothing has changed .It is early to say but e will see ifsomething has changed or not.

COURT 2 start 11:00am

Not Before 12:00 PM
[Q] N Ozegovic (CRO) vs [6] M Kirilenko (RUS) - To Finish 63 36 22

1 set all and 2-2 in 3rd. Masha has 8 dblfs so far, and has struggled too hold serve throughout the match. But she is fighting hard.

Hopefully a nights rest and some coaching will help her tomorrow.

Come on Masha!!! See her off!!!

This is hilarious losing to player ranked outside Top100 right now it is looking worse and worse every match, She should hire someone , I don't know but there are many great coaches all over the world and they are free
for example former Nadia's coach Tomek Iwanski or whoever who can force her to harder work and give her some motivation , I remember what jimmy Connors did and is doing to Andy Roddick confidence the guy came from one of the worst slumps to became real no.3 and GS contender , hiring a coach may make wonders , I have been alaways curious why Jelena Demetieva didn't hire a coach she is such a talent , and Maria is walking the wrong path right now maybe she need a break ?? I don't know :(

What a terrible loss. I thought that last week`s loss was a new low for her, but this is worst. I really don`t know what else to say other than i`m in full agreement that Makiri needs to make some wholesale changes. Like i`ve said before, she`s too good to be losing to qualifers in the 1st round of lower tier events.

ok the last 24 hours have sucked for me in the world of sports:sad:

the Warriors lose in the NBA after coming back from 18 down

and this, THIS i turn on the damn comp to find out she lost to a F'N qualifier!!! and i read that she got beat at the baseline yet again, she's got to realize sooner or later that baseliner is not her thing, she's got to play smarter than that, omg Makiri wtf is happening, honestly i think she's got to like make her own decisions, she's a grown woman (a very good looking one at that:p) and she's capable of making them herself. (i.e. a coach!!)
