View Full Version : Hingis' comeback is identiCOOL to Agassi's so far

Remember Agassi was ranked 140 in 1997 and then he won some tournaments in 1998 and made top12 but didn't do any better than the 4th round in the slams. Then in 1999 he started off the year by not winning anything until he won the French Open and then went on to make the Final of Wimbledon and won the US Open (and then won 2000 Oz Open, beating pete in semi also in 5 sets). All the while he didn't do particularly well in the non-slams. He told the media he was trying to improve his ranking in 1998 and then focus on peaking for the slams in 1999. I think we will see Hingis follow the same path, focused on improving her ranking in 2006 as her top priority, now she's done that and her mind is on the slams so her game won't be as sharp in these nonslams especially early in the year. Roland Garros will tell all of course. Another factor in Agassi's comeback was that he did poorly in long slam matches in 1998 but his stamini improved in 1999 to the point where he won RG in 5 sets (coming back from 2 sets to love down) and won the US Open Final in 5 sets also.

The comparison seems cute but probably more appropriate for Serena than Hingis.

The biggest difference between Agassi and Hingis is Agassi wasn't losing to younger and younger players every week.

Actually Agassi was doing very poorly at the start of 1999, lost to Vince Spadeau in the 4th round of the Australian Open 99 in straight sets! And was unimpressive in other tournaments follow Oz99. So after a solid 98 where he did well in the nonslams (won 6 titles) he appeared to be reverting back to his struggling ways in 99 before RG. So I think everything about it resembles Hingis. I wouldn't say it reminds me of Serena, since she didn't win even the small tournaments last year, and didn't really rise up the rankings to any great degree until she won the ozopen this year. :apumpkin: :couple:

You can only compare the early stages of their comebacks. Now the part about Martina doing very well in the slams................

I don't think so. I think Martina's slam days are over.
