Djokovic has already put Serbia back on the tennis map. The nation touts a modest tennis tradition aside from Monica Seles, a nine-time Grand Slam champion who was in the crowd Sunday.

"I'm very happy about that because she was one of my idols when I was young," Djokovic said

sounds gay. Most straight guys wouldn't name a female as their idol growing up. :tape:

This may make me sound really ignorant/unknowledgeable, but how many Serbian male tennis stars have there been for him to look up to?

Well, he just loves his country. :-) For me as a Greek it's difficult to find an idol from my country as well.
Eleni Daniilidou is the highest rank Greek and Konstandios Economidis is ranked at about 100... uff...

If you see that someone from your country (obviously Serbia had its struggles...) can make it, you can hope that you'll achieve that, too once.

Why would be ashamed? Because she's a female tennis player. I wouldn't be ashamed. And I agree, good for him because you're right, it shows that he has various influences. Besides, Monica had as much aggression as any male player. :worship:

I think in this case you have to realize that Monica is more than just a tennis player in Serbia. She's more like a national hero.

Ah that's sweet.

He's probably the only male tennis player ever to cite a woman as his idol. More power to him.

No but I'm not suggesting he's gay. I don't care, frankly.

I mean that I wish more men would admire women's contributions and not see women as operating at a 'lower level', a weight below them, with no influence in the 'man's' world in which we all live.

Djokovic, probably unintentionally, has gone against that rule.

It's so hard to dislike him. He is very respectful, well mannered, a very good player, and very cute. The insinuations (sp) that he is gay must end. If he is gay, or even remotely bi, I will actually start stalking him!!!!

Definitely dont get the gay vibe from him at all, though. And good on him for not being too self concious to admit that he looked up to a female player. That's hot.

Although Monica is ethnically Hungarian she was raised in the Serbian part of the former Yugoslavia. I think its only natural that Novak would look up to Monica. Monica really put her country on the map in the early 1990s.

He has a good idol, Monica rocks and she's a legend and a class act. I can think of worse players to idolise.

Novak definetly has game, and it doesn't hurt that he's really really cute.

Monica's an even classier act than Djokovic (she'd never throw her racquet in anger), but good on him for citing her as ONE of his idols (he also said Sampras was his idol growing up...).;)

That same article said Monica was in the crowd watching the match...anyone have any photos of her there????:wavey:

if you could only see the picture of the girl he is dating, you wouldn't say that. Monica is a legend here, as is all over the world. her biggest succses came while she played for our country, inspite all the problems we had!! it doesn't really metter wether your idol is male or female, and it doesn't make someone gay...

Nole, your the best right now in ATP!

4 weeks of tennis and 2 finals? and one win?

Monica is a good idol. It doesn't make you gay if you idolized a women player.
I Idolized Lindsay and Marat and it doesn'nt reflect in anyway to my sexual preference.

Nice to hear that from Novak. Monica was a legend and legends can be inspirations to people regardless of sex.

I know Goran Ivanisevic often said he looked up to Martina Navratilova, especially as she was another left hander.

good question...:yeah:

Novak:rocker:

they don't have a strong tradition at all in men's tennis. i would suggest the fact that there has been so much conflict in the Yugoslavia during the 90s was a big factor.

They've really come on though and now they've got Janko Tipseravic who is a really good player (although he has a lot of head issues). I would also keep an eye on Ilia Bozoljac because i think he's going to make some noise.

The current male ITF world champion cites a former female tennis great as an idol. When does that ever happen?

The legend of Monica Seles still continues!

All of us that follow tennis, knows what happened with the STABBING, and how that propelled Graf to her 22 slams. Monica was the best, and getting better. She had the power game with a capitol P. There is no telling how many slams she would have won if not for the "intentional stabbing to move Graf upward"..

Monica will always be one of the greatest, if not the greatest among people that know and acknowledge what happened to her.
