After watching her yesterday and at the AO...where do you think Serena is compared to her game back in 2001-2003? Richard always said back when Serena and Venus were dominating that if Serena played 70% she could win tournaments...where do you think she's at now and what does she need to work on if she's not there 90-100% yet?

I've seen Serena play better yesterday...now the AO...she was about at 60 to 70% her movement was still a little slow though

Her game is different from what it was in 2002.

To me she seems 75% on her game. She has to become quicker. She has made changes in her game but she has to use them more in matches.
She plays a lot of hardhitters nowadays so usually her serve and baseline groundstrokes are enough to beat them, but she has to experiment more with coming to the net, hit dropshots, slice and moonball and hitting short angles.

This will help her win more matches and win them easier against Justine, Amelie, Hingis and Schnyder. When she does this coupled with her beautiful serve, forceful groundstrokes and movement she will be 100%.

I'd say overall between 70-80%. Based on yesterday's final probably 45%-50%. But she def. was striking the ball a lot more cleanly in earlier rounds and at the AO final. Honesly, I thinks she just got nervous at the Miami final.

I'd say 70-80%. She could still improve her movement around the court, more specifically her footwork. Against Peer and Henin, she wasn't moving her feet like she had been in earlier rounds.

The AO final was 90-100, but right now I'd say she's in the 70-80 region...

Her game isn't the same, and neither was yesterday's opponent. Arguably, the player we saw against Henin yesterday was better than 2002-3 Serena. Could Serena in 2002-3 have backed off like she did yesterday, let an opponent of Henin's skill and calibre do more hard hitting than her, and still win the match?

Serena got her ass thoroughly kicked using plan A, switched to plan B, and eked that match out. In 2002, Serena would have gone down blasting away. Or, more likely, she'd have won by blasting away. Instead, she pulled out pretty much her whole bag of tricks. Slices, topspins, high shots low shots, drop shots, soft shots and of course, plenty of hard shots.

We learn more about players during adversity than when everything's clicking. 2007 Serena on a bad day vs 2002-3 Serena on a bad day? Give me the current model.

Right now she's fluctuating between her B- and A- games (80-90%). Nerves, these past few matches, have muddied things a bit (reminiscent of Summer 2004). I think with 2-3 more tournaments, her consistency with footwork, serve, returns and handling of near-favourite status will improve, and she'll be able to depend upon her B+/A- versions of her 2002 game match-in, match-out.

That game would still lead to some complicated 3-setters against Justine, Amelie, even Maria in full flight. If she wants to dominate as she did in 2002-03, it's important that she continues to work on incorporating the variety we've been seeing from her these past two tournaments, particularly her transition and net games. Too many times yesterday she reminded me of Steffi in the mid-1990s, who would often let ASV simply restart the point. The percentages are no longer in favour for an A- version of Serena 2002. She, like Steffi, needs to become more opportunistic.

Her footwork was bad. Her movement was good.
In fact Serena ran through a couple of shots because she got there so fast but didn't have the footwork to set up correctly.
Serena will never move as good as she did 5 years ago.
I wish some people would get that through their thick heads.
