View Full Version : So who's the better player?

supergrunt

You could say Serena because she fought back and won the match and managed to beat Justine playing well, or you could say Justine because she was destroying Serena for the first set and 1/2.

You cant really decide who is better on one match. I'd say Serena is better because out of all their matches, she has won on more occasions.

The person who wins while not playing her best is better.
Besides, Serena leads H2H 6-3.

Justine only victories coming on clay.
Justine have never beaten Serena on non-clay surface.

Serena leads Justine 6-3 head to head and 8-5 in Grand Slams. Serena has won a slam on every surface, Justine hasn't won Wimbledon. All of Justine's wins against Serena have been on clay. Justine is the better clay court player, but Serena is better than her on every other surface.

Atm Serena - she's had a better season and she BEAT Henin. It's up to Justine to prove otherwise the rest of the season.

 at people saying Henin has better technique and all. As if Serena didn´t change her game during the match yesterday, as if she lost a match on hard court and grass to Justine. A lot of people are showing their dislike of Serena this way. But she leads 6:3 in h2h she leads in the slam tally has won them all is going to win more. Justine is better on clay but Serena beats her on anything else and gives her a hard time on clay. Overall better player is Serena.

Well said.
I would rather pick someone who wins while not palying her best, than someone who loses while playing great.

This nuanced opinion is closer to the truth.
I think many here are confusing prefering Justine's game to saying Justine is better than Serena.

For those who say Justine is better, what else would they have Serena do to prove that she is the best.

Serena leads H2H 6-3
Serena leads GS count 8-5
Serena has won All 4 GS, Justine has not won Wimbledon.
Serena wins more often when not being at her best than Justine does.

Serena has probably a more effective game and is a great player herself, but for me, Justine is the best player on tour. Just for her to be able to compete with huge powerhitters standing at 5'5 on a fast court is amazing. That alone deserves tons of respect. She also can do a lot more things than Serena, but ofcourse what tips it off is that Serena is a more powerful baseliner. I admit though that the judgement is a bit subjective.

Thatīs contradictory. How can Justine be the best player on tour when Serenaīs game is more effective?

What can Justine do that Serena canīt. Serena can do everything with a ball and she showed some of that yesterday. Donīt project your opinion as fact because it isnīt.

umm, because I don't just judge a tennis player's game on whether it can just win him/her matches. So that's not contradictory.

As for variety, Serena is not just a ball basher, and she can opt to use variety, but her game is clearly dependent on power. WHen she can't hit the ball powerfully enough, she opts for vairety and ofcourse it isn't as nearly as effective, basically because she's not that good in it, but it can let her survive. So Justine is better in that department.

ture, but serena was no where near her best in the 1st set

justine wasn't allowing serena to play her best in the 1st set the second was more even

justine was better tennis-wise in the final but serena had the goods mentally

both great fighters but serena is much better at closing out

i say equal they are both great in different ways, if they both played the exact same style you could compare them directly and decide on a definite winner

Look guys, tennis is not figure skating, where judges make the final decision whose is better based intangibles.
We are lucky in tennis, we have individual, woman-to-woman confrontation.
In that department Serena is up 6-3. With Justine victories only on clay
Serena has has 8 GS, to Justine 5.
Serena won GS in an 4 surfaces.
If this is not overwhelming evdidence of Serena's superiority, I do not know what is.

Serena wasn't moving, serving, or hitting well in the first set. She was flat footed almost every point. Yes Justine played an incredible set, but that's not the entire story.

Serena has the better serve and forehand. Serena is the more offensive player (when she is playing well), and is in control of most of the points against any opponent.

Justine has the better backhand, volley, dropshot, and is a more hatural and complete player than Serena. Does that make Justine the better player?..

Justine is the better player technically, but I think Serena wins the match 7 times out of 10 on medium to fast surfaces and probably wins 5 out of 10 on clay.

I am just glad that these two great champions are around to compete for our enjoyment.

First of all I voted equal, but...

My reasoning is that I pretty much don't look at results from 2002 & 2003 and before. That's YEARS ago now. And one match on a hardcourt in Miami that could have gone either way is not enough to convince me either way. My judgment on both players from watching their overall play this year is, they seem rather well-matched (read: equal, I guess) overall. I want to see more.

Henin will dominate on slower surfaces while Serena will dominate on faster ones, a la Agassi / Sampras. I find Justine's game prettier to watch. But none of that really matters. What is great is that we have at last a new and exciting rivalry in women's tennis.

Williams123- I agree that Serena is a bit better than Justine, but she won more games in the first set against Serena than Sharpie won in two matches. At the level she is playing now, Serena is the top player and Justine is her closest rival.

Justine is more complete, Serena is better mentally.

I'm surprised i haven't seen more people talking about the head games yesterday. Both players were nervous, but Justine was steadier. As the first set went on, Serena probably got more nervous and tight wanting to just get on the board. After 7 games, her mental toughness kicked in... and towards the end of the second, Justine's respect / fear of serena played a role. Had she been playing a Kuznetsova, match would have been over in two.

I think carlos ealier this year said Justine was still scared of Serena... but yesterday showed that respect/fear had reduced, and that it was in a way mutual. Though obviously, after the win, you expect serena to be more confident and justines confidence against serena to be dented a little.

Serena won and she is nowhere near her ideal form and Justine has just won Dubai and Doha.
Imagine Serena fit, thin, and practiced.
Albeit, it was on hardcourts but on clay, result could have been different.
