Well what a surprise, just over two months ago Pam Shriver and Mary Carillo couldn't talk about how out of shape Serena was. What a sudden shift by those two hypocritical sea hags. Shriver kept on going on and on that Serena had gained weight. And Mary Carillo the shrew that she is couldn't stop comparing the death of Yetunde Price to that of James Blake's father from cancer. The negatiivty was over the top by ESPN at the Australian Open. And now two months later they are gushing over Serena's success. I am just waiting for Shriver and Cariillo ESPN, and the rest of the American commentators to complain that Serena is dominating the game again.

I was very surprised about how positive they were throughout this tournament about Serena. Even after Serena lost the first set 6-0, Mary was saying how great of a fighter she is.

Simplicity.

Why are we blaming the commentators for stating the obvious? This is their life -- tennis. To see someone overweight and lacking tone trying to win is almost disrespectful. It only speaks bounds to how amazing Serena is in her other areas such as athleticism, mentality, and power. I think we all knew Serena was fat. And let's face it, she hasn't lost much since Australia. I can't wait to see her in shape and holding all four grand slams. :]

They just jump on the bandwagon like the other so called "fans" who are only there when the Williams sisters are winning.

I remember Serena saying during the AO that she felt that she was in shape but was still trying to find her movement on the tennis court so her movement probably had little to do with her being out of shape.

I think calling Serena fat insults everyone else that she is playing....I hate when people say that....just accept it....she's never gonna look like MaSha....and if she was fat and beat a whole field at the two most important events so far for the season then the rest of the tour sucks or Serena is simply amazing!!

As much as I really don't like Mary Carillo, again it pisses me off that I am here defending her.

But I guess I need to remind people again that Mary has always been critical of the sisters because of how special they really are to tennis.

In her mind, this is the Serena Williams that we should see playing tennis and not the Serena that has had some crazy losses the past few years.

:haha:@ sea hags.

I agree with you 100%!! I can't wait until Lindsay has her baby, Kim retires or Martina H re-retires so one of them can come and replace one of those sea hags.

Serena was fat (there are some horrendous pictures of her from this year and last), but I think she looks much better than she did in Australia. Her arms are more toned, her booty seems more lifted, and her legs are pretty much all muscle. And how could you say that she's not in shape? She just went stroke for stroke with one of the fastest players on tour, and she certainly wasn't gasping for breath any more than Justine was.

I meant, better in shape. She has proven she is capable of competing but for the clay, we need better shape. And yes, she does look better than Australia. Her face looks a lot better, you can see it. Just a little more weight to go to take some stress off the joints. Serena has 3 weeks off before Berlin after Charleston. [ Of course Fed Cup but against Belgium without Kim and Justine, that doesn't really count :help: ] I hope to see great things from her, both on the court and off.

She's in better shape than she was even in Australia. I can't wait to see how she progresses from here :yeah:

Serena was not that out of shape. Serena just has a different body type as she explained during her press conferences at the Australian Open. It was out of line for Carillo and Shriver to attack her like that. I did not see them attack Andy Roddick and he's a crappy tennis player.

Yes, she was. Go look at her pictures in '02 and compare. They don't comment on Roddick, because he has nothing to do with this. You need therapy for your obsession with Carillo and Shriver.

Serena truly looks fabulous, in great physical condition and great form.

Although these two (MJF not so much, MC ugh) did do a bunch of negative numbers on Serena previously, to be fair, throughout the final, they were talking about how good / great she is even when she was 0-6 0-1 down.

Talk about obsession huh?....Anyway Serena was Not as out of shape as ppl claimed. Just after the victory in Melbourne, she did a photoshoot on the beach, and shee looked Gawjus! A little hippy, and less toned, but still WOW. Fat my ass! Matter of fact I'll try to post the pics.

What it all comes down to is, like she stated already, Serena is not, will never be a size 3 like Sharapova! Her natural build is FAR diffrent then the rest of the tour.....and some ppl just don't understand that; How a Black girl can be slightly muscular, rather vuluptuos, with big hips, and large bottom! DUH!!!! White ppl sometimes:rolleyes:

It was out of line and racist the negative treatment Serena received by Shriver and Carillo during the Australian Open. Serena is a great tennis champion and she's also a fellow American. But you see Serena is AFRICAN AMERICAN and in the USA some whites still believe black women are inferior. The treatment Serena received from all the ESPN commentators was racist and out of line. Its just interesting how hypocritical Shriver and Carillo are.

Well they should be gushing over Serena because her success means more success for ESPN and the announcers personally - by extension. I think the reason the criticism was a bit over the top (and to personal in my view from Carillo) is because she is so important to the sport. Its alright to comment on Serena being out of shape, but the reason she was out of shape is because of injury, not the other way around, which is what Carillo wanted us to accept as fact and not speculation. That is where Carillo when over the line.

As to Serena's fitness level: She doesn't look look much different than in AO. But what she looks like doesn't mean that much anyway. She's probrably never going to be as lean as the catsuit days, but she doesn't need to be. Serena wasn't gasping for breath in the heat of AO (when other supposedly in shape, match fit players almost fell out - Sharapova and others) -and she was fresh as a daisy in the 3rd set v. the "light on her feet" Henin. I don't trust the commentators judgements on the relative fitness of serena williams. She too different than the rest of the players.

Idiots sometimes. :weirdo: Who said she should look like Sharapova (certainly not me!)?... bringing race into this AGAIN. Serena was out of shape compared to how fit SHE HERSELF can be (although probably not as bad as 2006 Australian Open). She looked fitter in Miami, lost weight and many people have said she looks a lot better than at the Australian Open.

She wasn't *that* out of shape, but she looked out of shape compared to how she fit she can be at the Auz. It's about how fit she can look. What does your "ideal player" have to do with it? She is pretty fit now.

Just as you need therapy for your obsession with Serena.:haha:

Constantly calling someone a hypocrite in a baselss, nonsensical and irrational manner even when the comment was positive is obsession, commenting in threads about Serena *in GM* where everyone can comment isn't obsession, unless you are an obsessed Serena fan who just clearly can't handle it and calls people who disagree with you obsessed. :tape:
