I had to leave home after the 1st set of the Williams-Henin match which Serena came back in. After seeing her struggle against Petrova and Peer at AO and Henin in miami(and Peer for 1 set), it brings up the question? Why was Bammer successful? What did she do differently to finish her off?

Serena was rusty, sluggish etc. Bammer played better than Serena.

what happened was Serena was rusty after 4 months off....had to play 3 days in a row and just couldn't manage that...she was sore and rusty and tired....believe me...if they were to meet now Bammer would be destroyed:devil:

Serena will always be more vulnerable in a smaller event than a major one, I doubt Bammer would have beaten her in Melbourne or Miami ;)

Bam Bam is a lefty and was Serena's first player she met that year that she had to beat who wouldn't beat themselves.

You could also ask how Camille came back from 0/5 against maria, take her to 9/7 in the third and an in form kim just folded against maria. No two days are the same.

She played Safarovas the day before who is also a lefty, and nearly lost. So she *should* have been pretty much used to that I would think. Unless she just really sucks playing lefties?

But yeah, at Hobart, she was rusty, wasn't "match fit", and Bammer didn't lose her head.

She doesn't suck against them but when you haven't played for awhile you don't quite remember all the tendencies of lefties.
It's also harder to beat players who don't beat themselves.

That match was the best thing that could've happen to her in her prep for the AO.

Bammer is a very dangerous opponent for an out-of-form Serena.
Hard-hitting doesn't bother Sybille, she is very solid and gets many balls back because she's fast.

"in form" Sharopava was almost beaten by Pin
"in form" Clijisters got beaten by Sharapova

BTW did you remember Serena Williams vs Emilie Loit match at AO 2003 in the first. Serena narrowly won it 3-6 7-6 7-5. Serena was on fire at the time winning and still struggled against Loit. Anything can happen regardless she is in form or not.

Agreed.

And Serena was rusty, out of the game for four months, and was off-form.

Agreed. It was a wise decision to play there

I know she doesn't suck against them, but I mean she played a lefty the day before too, so it's not like she had no practice against a lefty that week - that was all I meant. I know she was still rusty and out of match practice too.
