View Full Version : Despite the rankings Serena is the best player in the world

Morrissey
Mar 31st, 2007, 06:43 PM
The WTA computer says Justine Henin is no.1 but that choke job by Justine just comfirmed what everyone already knows. THE BEST player the most talented player on the WTA tour is Serena Williams. Now its only a matter of Serena staying MOTIVATED and she will race right up to no.1. Serena will be ranked no.11 there are so many PRETENDERS in the top 10 that just don't deserve to be there. It was a tremendous effort by Serena to comeback and WIN. No excuses. Justine crumbled under the pressure and that was SHOCKING I did not think Justine would choke when she had those two match points. I really thought it was over. Well I was wrong. Serena proves once again she is the real no.1 on the WTA. For Serena to beat Sharapova TWICE this year and really demolished her. And now to beat Henin the world no.1 is something. And another thing Justine STILL HAS NOT BEATEN SERENA OFF THE CLAY. And that's what I thought Justine really had to prove today that she COULD beat Serena off the clay courts. Justine failed today very shocking that she collapsed under the pressure.

Justine failed again against Serena. It seems to me Justine just cannot beat Serena OFF the clay. Justine has lost to Serena on hard and grass and once on clay. This is going to really be tough for Justine. Serena Williams has really reestablished that she is BACK. And that the WTA its only a matter of time that she's back on top of the WTA rankings.

Serena still has a ways to go -- her footwork today was HORRIBLE -- but she's definitely on the right track. When her body catches up with her heart, everybody else WILL be playing for the #2 ranking.

OK, time to go play now. 'Bye, y'all! ;)

I wouldn’t go that far. I do think Justine is more complete than Serena (some of Serena’s volley’s were poor – though others were sublime), but definitely Serena is not just some ball basher. She is also undoubtedly the best fighter around, she has wrestled that title from Justine surely.

Justine tennis > Serena tennis.

CBS took a VERYYYY long close up shot of her knee during both falls. There was minor if any damange.

On that first fall, Serena had Justine running so much that she got wrong footed and was tangled in her own feet. The second fall was a little drama from Ms Henin to take a breather. She had her face scrunched up like she's dislocated her knee. Then got up and hit some big shots. Yeah, right. But a lot of players these days use little ruses to take a breather, so I'm not mad at Justine for going there.

Serena has been the best player in the world since 2002. And for those of you who think Serena is just a ball basher you couldn't be more wrong. Serena has so many great abilities on the court. Only someone who knows zero about tennis would call her a ball basher. And for those of you that have been watching the game for a while and still say she is a ball basher you obviously haven't watched her enough.

My interpretation of a ball basher is someone who just hits the ball hard and does nothing else with it. If that's true then Serena is not a ball basher in the slightest sense.

"The Best Player Of All Times" is a myth, there is no such thing. There are only best players at certain points in history, and even those not everyone agrees about. Serena and Justine are the two best players at this point in history, and Serena has the edge at the moment. Let's hope that both of them stay healthy and we could have a rivalry that could become as legendary as Court vs King, Evert vs Navratilova and Graf vs Seles.

Well, whatever she is, keep on being what you are Serena, because yours is a winning formula. ;) To be fair to both players though, let's not forget that Justine was one point away from winning the match, and her tennis in that first set was among the most impressive I've ever seen from any player. At the end of the day, the general public only care about the quality of the match and the heart shown by both champions. Not who is better than who and whose husband left who. So stop this non-sense and move on. Furthermore, players rather win slams than be #1. Ask Lindsay. The who best player or #1 thing is SO overrated. Next!

I agree she's THE player of 2007 so far. But I'd like a longer period of her playing well and winning tournaments before I'd agree she is the best player in the world as opposed to she's been the best the last couple of tournaments she's played. But if she carries on like this - I will regard her as the best player in the world well before the rankings catch up.

It's the "big points" that define a champion. I really don't like this "best tennis" "best toughness" distinction. I think it's a little insulting (though I'm sure unintentioned) and a little elitist. After all, they're both PLAYING tennis. It's not as if one is playing tennis and the other is boxing. The match is won and lost on the TENNIS court. Much to all the afficianado's out there dispair, style DOESN'T matter. Nobody can take a point away just because they don't like your style of tennis. So, for me, any discussion that tries to equate a more traditional style with better tennis has no bearing on ABILITY and actually amounts to..., superfluous, irrelevant, intellectual masturbation.

I don't want to get into a Justine vs Serena argument - but watching the match today - a sub par Serena was definitely a lot more than just a ball basher.

First she's got mental toughness. Second she worked out a plan B when things were going wrong. She came to the net a lot in this match which made a huge difference - and she made a lot of great volleys. Her overhead smashes were also rock solid. There were also a couple of drop shots I saw - and she may have made more that I didn't see. But those two I saw were absolutely perfect and gave Justine with the speed she has no chance.
