Great match, let's forget about the first set which was literally pathetic.
The big game started from the half of the second set, I have no words to say how genious were some points played by Serena.
Big credit to Justine for chasing down every single point. And screw the wasted MPs, it was Serena who defended them.

Justine is sliding on parts of the hard court like it's clay.

She's going to fall on the slippery green clay at Charleston when she plays in a week.
She does it a about once a match there.
It's not that big of a deal.

Serena is the best! Love her (like me) or hate her, you cannot deny that she is a great champion with the heart of a lion. I can't say enough how wonderful it is to have Serena, not just back, but BACK!

The comparision to Agassi was right on the money. Serena and Andre are both charismatic champions who do it their way. They are unpredicable and sometimes controversial, but they are never dull.

CONGRATULATIONS SERENA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When she was leading 5-4 40-15 and folded in the second set, it was almost a given Serena would win.
Through out the second set, she had chances to go further and she failed to take them. Even in the final game 0-40, she failed to take them.

Take nothing away from Serena. She is a great champion.

I'm very upset Justine lost. But I know she's worth number 1. She's the only player who can win from Serena now. Sharapova can't, Clijsters can't. So congratulations to Justine, because Serena is now on her best and then no one can beat her.

i wanted to stop recording the match when it was 5-4 Henin. I left work to watch this match, lol. I too was shocked by the falls Justine had today. I felt she played her best tennis for a set and a half. She played Serena the way most players dont. Hit up the middle at times no pace, slice very low, hit behind her, down the lines and how to net. If you do all those things successfully, then you can take Serena out her game. Henin also returned well today too, very aggressive. Im not a big Justine fan but she should do very well for the rest of the season. Now Serena has a 13-match win streak.

I almost turned my recorder off too, but I decided to stick with it. Justine played very well, but Serena was totally flat in that first set, which Henin jumped all over! Serena bageled! OUCH! :)!! Then Serena managed to get a few breaks and FINALLY make Justine start to doubt herself and make errors.

Serena's serve was gone today (although it did help her a very few times and of course on match point). Also, Justine can match power for power (she's amazing for such a small little thing), so on rare occasion was Serena able to intimidate her.

Serena beat 1, 2 and 7 in the world this week. She won both tournaments that she's played. I'd say that's not too shabby a "come back."

Far from Serena's best. Justine, as well. Sloppy tennis at times but the fight, the grunts, the drama made it the best women's match in a long time. I wanted a bagel in that third set so bad! :[

I do feel as though Justine's dramatics are a bit much but as a player, she played some of the best tennis I have ever seen from her up until the end of the second set. Her forehand was precise and consistently deep and suddenly, it lost its depth and her serve went a little off. Serena pounced on that.

Now, in Charleston, I hope we see a rematch where on clay, this battle would be even more amazing.

Great job girls. Congratulations Serena. Do well in Charleston, the top 10 awaits you!

Unfortunately for you, and fortunately for tennis...the season does not consist of just clay. Justine winning on clay doesn't make her the best player. The fact that she couldn't beat Serena today all while playing almost flawless tennis while Serena played like crap goes to show how much better of a player Serena is. In addition, Serena has not played many tournaments or matches and hasn't faced a truly great player like Justine since her comeback this year. The fact that she fought off 2 championship points and losing a 3-0 lead in the third shows that Serena is the best. The fact that Serena has all 4 slams and Justine does not shows who the best all around player is. Justine will probably be the best come clay but then I'd pick Venus or Serena over Justine on grass, and again on hard courts.

This wasn't a great match for either of them. Justine did achieve something very very rare against Serena - a set at love. Justine came out playing a pretty clean game. Serena progressed through the 2nd set, but her level the whole match was uneven. Her footwork was nowhere near as decisive as Serena had in earlier matches. Her serve not as demanding. The ratio of winners to UEs was in the negatives (at least -10) for both players. Not that great qualtiywise. Still, it came down to who could play the pressure points better. Serena showed that she is better at that. I hope Serena uses this match, especially the bagel to understand where her game could use improvement. Most of all, she could use a bunch of rest. Congrats to Serena :DWe see them both play so well so often that we begin to expect it from them each time. They both have earned a few off days on court. Can't always be the most dominating.

When she was leading 5-4 40-15 and folded in the second set, it was almost a given Serena would win.
Through out the second set, she had chances to go further and she failed to take them. Even in the final game 0-40, she failed to take them.

Take nothing away from Serena. She is a great champion.
Yes, she was leading and should have won, especially as poorly as Serena was playing but Serena has done this to many.

Way to go, Serena, upsetting the World#1! :clap2:

What a FIGHT!!!

Anyhow, it was a brilliant move from JH to choose to receive first at the start of the match. She took advantage of a very tight, tense Serena (whose's play resembled that of a Momo at RG, in that respect. :o)

But Serena was not to be denied today. She fought the nerves and JH helped her out a bit with a few UEs of her own in the second set. Serena showed the true champion she is by fighting those two match pts from JH and serving it out while being 0-40 down on her own serve at 5-3.

But really Serena should stay away from the net imo (unless it's for overhead put aways or something...) :help:

Justine is sliding on parts of the hard court like it's clay.

She's going to fall on the slippery green clay at Charleston when she plays in a week.
She does it a about once a match there.
It's not that big of a deal.

Serena had Justine changing directions and running so much on that first fall point that her feet finally couldn't keep up with what her find wanted her to to.

The second fall seemed to me like a little dramatic move thrown in to take a breather! Then after the breather, Justine came back firing on all cylinders! Things that make you go, "Hmmm..."

Amazing stuff from both ladies! Just very well done!

The first set was all Justine. Just amazing stuff from the Belgian! :worship:  But also with a combo with Serena not looking like she wanted to be out there and terrible footwork

Second set, Justine really continued to step up while Serena kept fighting and grinding away :worship: There was a point in the second set when Serena won a very tough point at net and she stuck her butt out  I was jumping at that point  When Justine scraped her ankle a bit was the turning point in my opinion.

Third set, Serena ran away with it even though Justine tried to keep it close. Really well done both girls I love you both! :worship:

wow serena. just wow, what a pleasure to watch and witness. serena was great, despite not being her best. justine was a pleasure as well and truly hung in there. she's a good champion and even i'll admit that this isn't her best tournament and serena has won it three times, so those intangibles may have played a part.

i'm glad they were so warm towards each other at the end. i even saw rodriguez applauding serena's good service games. this will be a great rivalry and i'm sure both will produce awesome matches.

until then, well done serena. some of her volleys (i emphasize some because others were :o ) and dropshots were feder-esque. so much for all the haters who say she's a one dimensional power player who outmuscles her opponents.

You played brilliantly the first set and a half and fought back in the third.
Your game is beautiful and you have my respect. I always look forward to watching you play Serena and I can't wait until you guys meet again. Good luck next tournament.

Serena
Way to fight back in the second set.
When you were down those two match points, I almost couldn't bear to watch. But you have something in you that every great champion has: the will to win. I'm so proud to be a fan. 15-1 on the season. Two titles. AMEN. :hearts:

serenas volleys and backhand were crap, still she won with her serve and forehand

See below

Serena's backhand (and serve) saved her in the final game of the match - ok, it wasn't in top form throughout, but when it came to the crucial points she could generally rely on it.

Yeah, you can tell people didn't watch the entire match as closely. Serena saved herself literally by getting her ass off the baseline and getting up to net. She hadn't held serve until she started serving and volleying. But definately, she will want some of those volleys back.

Total points won JH- 103 SW- 99 :o

Expected stat, especially since JH bagelled Serena in the first set.

Whoever you support, we must congratulate both players for a fantastic hard fought and fair final.

Womens Tennis at it's best. :clap2:

Agreed. JuJu hit some incredible winners, I mean she even had Serena clapping for her. She was doing everything in that first set and a half. And then remembering it again in the third set, to take advantage of those short balls by Serena.

As to Ms. Williams. S. dot. Wow, she hit some incredible winners as well, they just happened at more critical moments.

My fave Justine winner. Was when she ran around the bh and hit a scroching fh return winner for the first set in the second. I also thought the fh winner, when she fell the first time was exceptional. Credit to Serena for sticking in that game.

My fave Serena winners. Was sticking in that point (forgot score- think Juju had a break point in 3rd set) and hitting 2 smashes finally getting the winner. The other, the BOOTY VOLLEY of course!!!

THANK GOD this rivalry is back - women's tennis is interesting again. Justine and Serena are clearly the cream of the WTA - I hope they play a few more finals this year. What an exciting match to watch, but it was just as nice to see Justine and Serena laughing and joking around after their interviews with Mary Joe. What great sportsmanship from both.
Thank god for that. I would much rather see these two differing styles out there. Serena not only fought she was problem solving right there on court. Especially good to see the return of sportsmanship in their matches.

Serena's serve was gone today (although it did help her a very few times and of course on match point). Also, Justine can match power for power (she's amazing for such a small little thing), so on rare occasion was Serena able to intimidate her.

Yeah, her serve wasn't really doing her any favors today. And Juju's return game really added pressure and drama. I was telling a friend, it was like a role reversal. Juju was dominating with power, Serena had to go and find her touch game. And though it was up and down at times, it was consistent enough to get the VICTORY!!!:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

I can't understand some people are calling this match awful... full of drama, some amazing shots and skills displayed, AMAZING FIGHT from both players... is this the match of the year? (So far)

Fabulous!!!!! Well done serena, absolutely amazing, Justine... you tried very hard, so hard luck, but great run on making your first miami final, and adding to such an amazing finish.

Absolutely.

Ummm, Justine was in all four grand slam finals last year, so I think this a bit disgenuous. Give her (Juju) some credit, she may not be as good as Serena, but she played Serena very tough today, on a surface and at a tournament that are not her favorites. Juju has won 3 of the 4 grand slams, and was in the finals of Wimbledon, after winning French Open. Not easy. Especially when you have been dealt with fatigue issues your entire career.

I just don't get why (us) Serena fans can't give other opponents some credit every now and then.

Way to go, Serena, upsetting the World#1! :clap2::

But really Serena should stay away from the net imo (unless it's for overhead put aways or something...) :help:

Way to go indeed. :worship:

Again, I disagree with this to a certain extent. Serena was able to fight back today bec. she got her ass off the baseline and shortened those rallies. Just the threat of Serena charging made Justine readjust her game. Yeah, she didn't make them all, and some were downright ugly. But swear to gosh, Serena was headed for an embarassing second set if she remained on the baseline and in those extended rallies. I also think getting to net helped her refocus.

CONGRATULATIONS SERENA!!!! She fought so hard and even though she was no where near her best she came out on top. Justine played a great set and a half but simply could not beat Serena on the important points. I expect more great matches between these two all year long.

Your first sentence is true, but after that I disagree. A hardcourt victory by Serena in a tourney that Justine's never surpassed the QF's before is just as untelling as a hardfought Justine victory over Serena on clay. Justine didn't play her very best today at all times, but that's because she was playing Serena Williams. Serena didn't play her very best today at all times, but that's because she was playing Justine Henin. These are the 2 best players in the world, folks. I don't see any logical reason to conclude one is "better" than the other from this match. It should be a great rivalry that will hopefully be worked out between 2 fabulous, uninjured champions this year.

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. (AP) -- By the third game, Serena Williams was flailing her arms in frustration. Two games later, she threw her racket. Then she screamed at herself.

For Williams, the transformation came in the nick of time. She survived a dismal start and erased two championship points in the second set Saturday to win the Sony Ericsson Open, beating top-ranked Justine Henin 0-6, 7-5, 6-3.

"It's just not in me to give up," Williams said during the trophy ceremony. "I always keep fighting."

The comeback was nothing new for Williams, who revived her career by winning the Australian Open in January for her eighth Grand Slam title. Once ranked No. 1, she fell to 140th last July because of long layoffs but will climb back to 11th next week.

Williams closed out the victory with a service winner, accepted gracious congratulations from Henin and then waved her index finger for the cheering crowd, intent on returning to the top.

The match was 39 minutes old before Williams won a game, and Henin was twice one point from the title serving at 5-4 in the second set.

"I said, `I don't want to lose this fast. At least let it last an hour,"' Williams said.

Williams saved both points, including one where her return clipped the net cord, keeping her in the match by perhaps an inch.

Henin slipped and took an awkward tumble during that game, skinning her left knee, and lost the next six points. She fell again trailing 3-0 in the final set and remained seated on the sunbaked concrete for nearly a minute, as if debating whether to concede.

The feisty Belgian rose and rallied for 3-all, before Williams began one final surge to earn her fourth Key Biscayne title.

Playing in only her seventh tournament in the past 18 months -- and her first since Melbourne -- Williams improved to 15-1 this year and 41-5 at Key Biscayne.

Two first-time Key Biscayne finalists will meet for the men's title Sunday: 29-year-old qualifier Guillermo Canas and 19-year-old Novak Djokovic.

The Williams-Henin matchup was their first meeting in nearly four years, and the 2 1/2 -hour revival of the rivalry produced plenty of drama.

Henin, a five-time Grand Slam champion playing in her first Key Biscayne final, used her vast array of shots to control the early rallies. Williams was off balance and struggled in vain to control the groundstrokes she used to overpower top-seeded Maria Sharapova and others in previous matches.

More Photos
Williams won only six points in her first four service games. She finally won a game by breaking for 1-all in the second set, then held for the first time in the next game.

"I was making a lot of errors," Williams said. "Justine was moving up to the ball and blasting winners. I had to lift the level of my game and stop making errors."

The crowd -- including Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade -- was in Williams' corner and roaring as she began to rally. Her groundstrokes became steadier, and she started moving forward more aggressively.

Also contributing to the turnaround was some tentative play by Henin. She hit two double-faults serving for the title at 5-4 in the second set, and another when she lost serve to fall behind 5-3 in the final set.

Williams trailed love-40 serving in the final game before she swept the last five points. She converted her first championship point, curling in a 77-mph kick serve that handcuffed Henin.

The serve skipped off the sideline and Williams hesitated, unsure whether the shot was good. She then dropped her racket and grinned sheepishly at her narrow escape and latest title, the 28th of her career.

"She's a real fighter," Henin said. "She played very well."

Williams also won $533,350. Henin settled for $266,675.

Major props to Serena. She kept on fighting and it eventually payed off. Amazing performance and comeback, and she truly deserves this title :yeah: I have to say that it's great having her back at the top of the game (where she belongs).

Justine, aaah so close! Mindblowing play in the beginning, but such a pity she couldn't convert those MP's. It kinda reminded of her Wimby-final last year. Very solid play in the beginning but when it mattered most, her level dropped a bit while her opponent's level increased.

This match. Wow. This is why I watch tennis and we just need matches like these. When you have two fighters like Serena and Justine on the same court, you're just garanteed fireworks. It was so good seeing them play again, I felt like I was skyrocketed back into 2003. I really, really hope that there will be many more battles between these two this year, because seriously I felt like we were stolen of a tremendous rivalry at the end of 2003. Hopefully both players will stay healthy, so we can keep having matches like these on a regular note (certainly in the big tournies)

First things first, Justin played great tennis and upheld her part for making this match both sensational and nail-biting (at the same time).

Now to Serena, there is no denying the "Comeback Queen." Serena had not dropped a set the entire tournament, prior to the final. When she was bageled in the first set, I was floored. Serena just couldn't seem to find her game, any part of it. I was most shocked by the absence of her normally consistent and on-point serve. When Justin was serving for the match, I yelled at the TV saying, "Serena, you didn't play well all week to lose this final so "handle your business!" After winning the second set, I knew the viewers would be in for a serious (third set) treat. There were nice shots, awesome defending / retrieving and emotion from both sides of the net. When all was said and done, Serena showed that she is truly not only a great fighter, but possibly the GREATEST FEMALE TENNIS PLAYER EVER!!! Serena is by far the best (even though many hate to admit it). I agree with Oracene when she said "physically fit or not, Serena causes great problems for her opponents." I pray that Serena remains healthy and committed. At this rate, she can end the year at # 1. YOU GOTTA LOVE what Serena does for tennis. Off her game, bageled in the first, decent serves and returns no where to be found, Championship points down, YET (through it all) a true Champion emerges (with another title),SERENA WILLIAMS. '07 oz open ( rallies from a set and 4-5 down against Nadia in 3rd round and then was two points from defeat against Shahar in QF)
'07 Miami ( rallies from set and 4-5 facing two mp's).
