no surprises here
but who will be the 4th member of the team after Dementieva's injury?
word is that Shamil is trying to decide between Safina and Chakvetadze

it is interesting that when Pova makes her Fed Cup debut, it will be on a team with other Russians that grew up abroad (Kuz in Spain, Nadia in Egypt) instead of hardcore Moscow Russians like Myskina and Dementieva

the decision of either Chakvetadze or Safina is very important because whoever is selected will be eligable for the 2008 Olympics

whoever is not selected will have to hope to be included on a later team in 2007 or 2008 in order to be Olympic eligable ... which may be difficult with Dementieva returning

Do You actually have to play Fed Cup to quallify for the Olympics, or just make Yourself available for play?

If Dementieva was fit she would be my 4th choice and skipper of the team.

Word is Shamil is not sure about Chakvetadze yet - on current form I would go with Vera Zvonareva rather than Safina.

Sharapova in Fed Cup for Olympics...

Great team and either Zvonareva or Chakvetadze should be 4th player.

I'd go for Safina to fill the 4th spot and put her in the doubles match

Don't you have to represent your country twice to be eligible for the Olympics? Sharpie would have to play again...

Europe rocks
Mar 30th, 2007, 06:41 PM
Very strong team  I'd pick Chakvetadze over Safina, but Shamil may bring in someone ranked lower, give them a chance

Spain

But Dinara has done much for the team, especially in 2005. :p Hopefully it's her. :D

but Chakvetadze said in the interview after the match against Henin that she'll play FedCup... so i thought they've made the decision already.

Chakvetadze :)

I'd play Chakvetadze or Zvonareva. Safina hasn't been playing as well as those two have been lately. Although I don't really care who the fourth player is, this team of 3 could probly beat Spain on their own, with either Kuznetsova or Petrova playing the other singles and then teaming up for doubles.

I would take both Dinara and Anna. Maria isn't needed for this team against Spain. She should play the next tie.

Wow, great team! It's a hard decision between Dinara and Anna C... They both should be able to play in the Olympics 2008.

Based on current form, I would pick Anna over Dinara.

Wannabeknowitall

I would pick Zvonareva and I hope they do as well.
She has worked so hard in the last 4 years.
She barely missed the team in 2004 to make the Olympics, it would suck that she's only a few ranking below having another try to get to play the Olympics next year.

Safina and Anna are young.
I'm sure they will have another chance at it as Maria would have been part of the Olympic team herself but the team had to be chosen before the end of Wimbledon in 2004.

Vesnina will be on the team, not Safina or Zvonareva. Very strange

Zvonareva and Safina have all been on Fed Cup winning teams before ... maybe they needed someone new?

Vesnina played last summer. She played a doubles match with Anna C
But this year, Vera Z and Dinara are playing much much better than Elena Vesnina is

Question: do you add Elena Likhovtseva to the team against the Americans in July? If both Williams sisters play, the doubles rubber may be live.

Dont like this team at all, without Dementieva, Sharapova, Safina, Vera, Makiri I guess I'll have to root for Spain!!

No. They should bring Lena D, Anna C, Nadia and Sveta.
That's the best Russian team right now, and they're all reliable.
If any of them can't play, bring Safina or Zvonareva
