View Full Version : How come the men's final sold out but not the women's?

I thought women's tennis was better and more popular than men's? And with the supposedly super-uber-popular Serena Williams in the final the tickets should've sold out in 2 minutes but they haven't. Humph.

MIAMI – The Sony Ericsson Open has sold out for the men’s final, scheduled for Sunday, April 1 at 12 p.m., Tournament Director Adam Barrett announced Wednesday afternoon.

Fans still wishing to take part in the Sony Ericsson experience may purchase grounds passes for $10, which will allow guests to watch the matches on the big screen televisions. Fans purchasing grounds passes for Sunday’s men’s final will be allowed to bring lawn chairs into the facility.

Tickets are still available for Saturday’s women’s final, set to begin at noon.

For ticket information, please call (305) 442-3367 or visit the website at http://www.SonyEricssonOpen.com.

not surprising, whomever attends joined tennis events knows that men's matches are usually more packed and searched for than most of the women's... that does not prove that one particular tour is more popular than the other though, only that men's tennis is probably more popular among the hardcore fans, which might not include the casual viewer...

The men's tournament at UCLA (near me) last summer didn't have that many patrons UNTIL the final, and that's here in Los Angeles -- a tennis mecca because of our all year round mild weather. Not only that, it was one of Andre Agassi's last events!

I called for tickets for both Agassi's last match (it turned out to be), and the semi finals the same day 2 hours before match time!

At Carson for one of Serena's matches I had to pay for scalper tickets as the only one's available at the boxoffice were in the last row of the stadium -- nearly in the clouds! And this was her second round match!

Also, some people may have been expecting to see Federer and Nadal in a final leading up to the clay season and pre-bought. That hasn't happened. Quite honestly, the men's final may be interesting because of the young guns, but the draw is not that hot in my opinion.

I bet a lot more tickets will be sold before Saturday! Even if one doesn't like Serena, this is a hot match and a great opportunity to see two of the best players -- male or female -- here in the US! If it were in Los Angeles, I'd even pay the scalper if I had to for a ticket. Alas, TV will do nicely.

In the old days when I used to attend the Virginia Slims matches at Cobo Hall in Detroit, the women sold very well. There were as many if not more spectators to see Evert back then as to see the top men (I went to those matches whenever they came through town too).

Women's tennis is just as, if not more popular than men's tennis. You only have to do a little research to see that. :p

I disagree. Men don't play "better," they play "different!" Justine and Serena are just as exciting to me as Federer and Nadal. Maybe more so, because I've always preferred watching the women (more rallies, less service dependent for most players).

You're kidding right?? This generation couldn't keep a rally going if their life depended on it! They have no desire to a have a rally or construct a point. They want to end the point as quickly as possible. Your description fits past generations not this one -- unfortunately.

I still don't like watching men play, I think tennis in general is a bore right now, but the current wham bam specialists from eastern europe are not the type of female players that attracted me to tennis in the first place. If Gaby had played like the current players I would have turned the channel.

It depends.I stop watching Federer`s matches except the finals coz he ALWAYS wins.Thanx God that he loose twice in the last 2 tournament :D I prefer to watch women tennis and not to know what will happens than Roddick vs Ljubicic. It's probably because when tickets went on sale people were hoping for a Federer/Nadal final and probably weren't sure if Serena would play or make it to the finals. It would be interesting to see whether the men's finals would have still sold out if people had realized they'd be seeing a men's finals with either Canas/Lljubicic and either Murray/Djokovic.

the only reason is that women's tennis is not actually a tennis show, but a fashion show!!! they never play as good as men's and they just come to make a fashion stage...sorry but i never know if they have even 30% of men's spectators!!

If I had tickets to the men's final now, I'd be trying to exchange them for the women's final - that is going to be a match! I will only watch the men's final if Canas and Djokovic play. Murray and Lljubic don't interest me in the least - can we say BORING!

Yep, and that's still more than most of these broads will ever hope for! See, in those days, television actually aired women's tennis. You didn't have to depend on the slams to see your fave play. Unlike today when even the "tennis channel" doesn't want to air women's matches.

Federer was already gone when they announced the sellout Wednesday, and Nadal lost that day. The women's final still hasn't been announced as a sellout, and we know two big names are playing.

the mens final was almost sold out from day one. think people expected a different final. but the mens field has tons of spanish guys and a huge spanish tennis following in the area, so that might be another reason. if the ladies final doesn't sell out after today, i'll be shocked. the women haven't had the big names always make it so people probably wanted to wait. we know which final will bring in the highest rating though.

if canas is not in the final those people will regret, paying to watch ljubicic and murray the most boring players i know.
they hoped for a roddick/roger or roger/nadal final and the tickets are bought well in advance.

Well, those that say that men "play better" usually mean that the male player would beat the female player. But that argument only goes so far. Most boxing fans would agree that Suger Ray Leonard was a much better fighter than Mike Tyson, and yet if they would fight each other Tyson would win very easily. Why? Because Leonard was a welter/middleweight and Tyson being a heavyweight punched much harder. The same thing goes for women vs men in tennis. Men hit the ball harder, but that doesn't necessarily mean that their tennis is more entertaining or that they are more talented. Justine Henin is more talented than, say Ivanisevic yet she would hardly touch a ball if they would play each other.

Obviously mens tennis because of Federer is better to watch - if you don't care about final result. Men have array of different shots, quicker thinking and execution, athletism you name it. For true tennis fans who like tennis because of the game Federer is pure pleasure...

Federer is a genius. But I don't see why it's always necessary to compare women's tennis with men's tennis. Just enjoy both for what they are. Women have to make the most of what their body allows them to do. It's unfair to compare them with male players, they should be compared with other females only. Of course women aren't as fast or strong as men, that is determined by nature. So what? Carl Lewis wasn't as fast as a leopard either, and Mike Tyson is nowhere near as strong as a gorilla. Yet we respect them for exploiting their talents as male athletes to the max. Women deserve the same respect.

Mens tennis is sold out because there is a lot of latin American population in Miami. They brought the tickets hoping to see Nadal-Federer but instead they are getting to see Canas-Djvokovic's match which will interesting offcourse.(It is also it is a best of five set match) Most of the crowd will be rootig for Canas and there will some serbs in the crowd too.

I would rather see a competitive mens tennis final than watching a one sided sharapova vs Williams match. But i hope Justine vs Serena will fare better than sharpova's match.

Because Maria Sharapova LOST several days ago.

Justine is not considered a match for Serena on this surface, and she is MUCH less popular in this country in spite of her superb game.

Perhaps its not done like the old days (which is really the gen that I still follow), but Roger Federer and Serena and Justine do know how to construct points. Its different, but the game is different.

I agree that a lot of the ball bashers are boring for thsoe of us who grew up with the old game, but I can appreciate players like the Williams', Justine, Amelie, Kimmy, I forget her name but Mal Washington's sister (she's on injury) and Jelena Jankovic. Jelena really impressed me seeing her live in Carson. She can handle a net game (unless she's fending off one of the super power bashers) and has personality like the old days. I really enjoyed watching her live.

As for Gaby -- her and Arantxa-Vacario's moonballs drove me away from tennis for YEARS! I couldn't stand the boredom. Seles used to like the moonball sometimes except Steffi would make them eat it (thank GAWD) and Seles could switch to power (even though she too was not a fav of mine). I don't miss moonball tennis one bit.

I don't buy your comments as being truthful at all. From my own experience buying tickets for events here in Los Angeles in 06! The men's event didn't sell any better (and at some matches WORSE) than the women.

I think the ATP bought up all the tickets for this men's final in order to make people think any one cares about the men's final. That's not so far fetched as it happens in plenty situations where a business is trying to maintain a reputation.

Me, I do not buy one bit that men's tennis is more popular. Canas may have upset RFed 2 events in a row, but I still don't trust the guy because he CHEATED with drugs! I won't be watching the men but I will NOT miss Serena and Justine!
