can you believe how time quickly goes by. it was only yesterday that these 2 played their first match at wimbledon in 97, when both were 16 and 17, and 2 months later in the us open final. success came so quickly for both that at their would be age of 27, they've had legendary careers. they've both had their issues, missed years of tennis, though venus was on/off. they've both grown up in front of the world. what happens when vee, martina, and serena retire? other players just dont have what these players have. the "it" factor. the matches from 97-2002 from linds, vee, tina, rena, capriati, seles, mauresmo, and throw in a young henin and clisjters, etc...were just awesome, and the matches that were produced then are just so much better than it is these days. will we ever see those days again.

Good post!

Momo will be 28 and Serena 26, still, I think we will see some great matches involving the 'veterans' for a few more seasons at least! :wavey:

they did not play each at wimbledon 1997

venus lost first round to grzybowska and hingis won the whole thing, beating novotna in the final

but still, they're approaching veteran ages

 Kinda both funny and sad to think that they can be considered "veterans" of the tour by now :(

lecciones
Mar 23rd, 2007, 02:12 PM
Yes funny since they started so early that at this age they are already called veterans and Martina Hingis was even in the historical profiles of WTA tour when it was up. :P Funny thing :)

Hope they play as long as they can because I truly love that generation of legends. (Lindsay gone, Monica gone .... only Martina, Pierce and the Williamses left)

ya. even 10 years later....they are still class of their own.

hingis came back after almost 4 years to be rank top 10.
serena won AO after 1 year of semi-rest.
venus is still scaring of others......

to me, hingis, serena, venus are in the class of their own

They certainly had one of the best rivalries in tennis and hope it will continue for at least another couple of years.:worship: While Venus doesn't seem to have a "man" in her life at the moment we all know Martina is engaged so depending on how successful she plays this year she could be ready to "pitch" it all and go down the aisle. :hearts: However I'm hoping for more aren't you:confused:

Yeah, it´s weird to think of them as ´veterans´. Well Venus has said she plans to play until her thirties so I hope we have a good 4 years left of watching her play great tennis and hopefully snatching OZ, FO and the YEC.

i think these ladies have got four years of tennis in them, serena has five to six years of tennis in her.look at likhosteva is thirty something, mary will be thirty three, bammer will be twenty eight, momo twenty eight, patty twenty nine.they can play till they are thirty three.
i hope those espn commentators will stop talking about the williams ages, as if they are the oldest on tour, they go on and on about their ages as if they are counting every year and cant wait for them to retire.

well weve all gotten older with these players. its sort of like we get use to them every year. we expect them to come back and play the tournaments. like for hingis, every year her fans watch roland garros to see if she can finally win it. she has 4 yrs i think, atleast to win there. or for the williams to see if they can take wimbledon. so itll be sad when all of them are gone, cause like i said, no one else in the game can have the same presence like martina or vee or rena, even if davenport was a much quieter person, she was still "there." of course justine has will and determination on court, but off court, its hard to "know" her. and kim who has so much charisma and energy cant seem to bring enough when she plays tennis, and shes retiring. and who else can be more fiestier than Jcap, or as mentally tough as monica. the question now is will these remaining players fight to prove that at no matter what age, they will still be the best. cause you still see martina, and vee, and rena walk, and when i say the walk, they have the "walk."

and who will be the last to stand.

I also thought about this fact some time ago... itīs a bit weird, and itīs even worse to think that from 27 to retirement can be so fast...:( I hope Martina plays untill 35 at least, but obviously she will play untill 30 not more.

Exactly! A tennis career comes and goes in a flash. The wisest players embrace what time they have and throw themselves into it full tilt, because it'll all be over before they know it.

And we fans also need to try to appreciate them while they're with us; despite all their little character quirks and issues, all the elite players provide great entertainment. :worship: If you don't watch some of the top players at their peak, because you've decided you "hate" them, you're only missing out on a great show that won't last long -- we, too, just like the players, have to seize the day and enjoy all of them.

You can't really say that because you don't
know the players. They all have different goals,
dreams, and directions they want to go in that
are a good fit for them. Some are fine with being
all tennis and some never wanted to be all tennis.

They do what is right for themselves.

:yeah: great thread!!! I think over the years Martina and the sisters have grown to have mutual respect for each other (remember the 'high school' 99 US Open??)... hopefully their fans can do the same...

Martina will always be my favourite player of all time, but I think a part of why i love her is her on-court rivalry with the sisters, they brought the best out of her, even when she lost to them. For that I have a great amount of respect for them!!!

Lol, they look better NOW, if you ask me. Yeah, their aging means MY aging. I'm glad to still them around. Lindsay's retirement had me thinking....what the hell am I gonna do when it's Vee's turn??? I don't even want to think about it anymore. Damn, they're no longer spring chickens, but I prefer mature women.

is there still animosity between the hingis fans and williams fans? ill forever be a hingis fan. and when she retired, i needed someone to cheer for. and when the williams had their issues and were away from the game i missed them. first time i really cheered for serena was wimbledon 04. and the first time i really cheered for venus was aussie 03, only because after three defeats to serena in finals, i wanted venus to get it back. from then on, ive been their fans. and now theyre back. just imagine a serena/venus match versus martina in a semi/final of a slam? ohh how delicious that would be:drool:  . i just remembered something martina said after defeating rena and vee back to back in the aus 01, but losing to them in doubles. she said something along the lines of you can beat them one at a time, but not when theyre both on the same side of the net...lol:lol:

All,

I agree. How time does fly when you are having fun. I enjoyed these two in tennis indeed.

Among other things, I remember when I wrote a parody where I had Martina in Palm Beach Gardens peering thru the Williams' family dining room window in an effort to try and get a glean on what they were about and up too. I did it around the time she was linked w/that attorney. LOL! Pops was the one that caught her peeping in.

Great tennis playing between Venus & Martina. Venus gained confidence when she beat Martina @ Swisscom that year and then she sprinted on.

My gosh. Stop reminding me. I clearly remember the anticipation/hype for both of these players. Where has all that time gone off to? Through what window did it fly? And what have I done with myself since then?....
