Serena eyes more Miami success
Posted: Thursday March 22, 2007

MIAMI (Reuters) -- Australian Open winner Serena Williams fully expects to pick up where she left off when she resumes her season at the Sony Ericsson Open after nearly two months away.

"I'm ready to bring my A-game and any game, whatever it takes to do well here," the three-time champion told reporters on Thursday. "It's just one match at a time."

Williams thrashed Maria Sharapova in the Melbourne final on Jan. 27 but has not played competitively since.

Instead, she and her sister Venus again dropped from the tennis radar. Upon their return in Miami, they find themselves in the same top quarter of the draw, with the 13th-seeded Serena facing Elena Likhovtseva or Anastasia Rodionova in the second round.

"I've been hitting a lot, actually, a lot with Venus and my hitting partner," said Williams, currently ranked 18th in the world. "I just get the best practice when I hit with Venus. She's just the best player, she's so solid."

With trademark bravado, Williams insists she is close to invincible.

"I never come into a tournament thinking I'm going to lose," she told reporters. "It doesn't matter what the past has been or even if I don't win. I always come in thinking I have a good shot, and that's it. It's awesome to win here a lot. I've got to do it again, I look forward to it."

Rainy skies on Thursday prevented the former world No. 1 from having a hit on the new bright purple showcase court at Crandon Park.

Actually it's good... makes for better matches and if someone does beat Serena, there will be no question of her motivation. ;) I was wondering if she would care about this event or not... I guess I know now.

it annoys me that reporters will take her statement that "I never come into a tournament thinking I'm going to lose,"
and spin it into she insists she's close to invincible.

No doubt if she starts losing in a match the usual harpies will start making cracks about "close in invincible" and saying that "that's what Serena said in the papers the other day". :weirdo:

You really think anything she says wouldn't be spun like that? She didn't have the success she has as an actress, poet, designer, dancer, 8 time Singles Slam Champion by NOT thinking that she's invincible.;)

Exactly, like how dare Serena go into any tournament with belief in herself.

Okay, sooooo, where's the "bravado?"

Where is the insisting of invincibility?

It's stuff like this that I hate. I mean, come on. Show me a player that goes into an event thinking she's going to lose, and I'll show you a loser more times than not! Serena says she comes in thinking "I have a good shot."

Since when does "I have a good shot" = "invincible?" :weirdo:

It's slants like this that undiscerning readers see and walk away saying Serena's a braggart.

As of the writing of this post, I haven't read people's responses to this article, I am hoping that people have seen the difference between what Serena ACTUALLY said and the "writer's" SPIN.
