Indonesia faces expulsion from Tennis Federation

Indonesia's refusal to play Israel in the Fed Cup tie last year could risk expulsion by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) if it fails to pay the fine, local press said Thursday.

Indonesia faces 29,100 U.S. dollars ITF fine for the refusal and is given deadline until April 5, reported the English daily The Jakarta Post.

Indonesian Tennis Association (Pelti) chairwoman Martina Widjaja has warned that the amount is "simply beyond the association's capability."

"If we fail to pay the fine, we could be expelled from the ITF and no longer be able to play in the Fed Cup, Davis Cup or other international and multi-sports events sanctioned by the ITF," she was quoted as saying.

Indonesia pulled out from the competition in Israel last year under instruction from the Foreign Affairs Ministry in protest over Israel's heightened military actions in the Gaza Strip, the newspaper said.

Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim country, has no diplomatic ties with Israel.

i dont get why they have to pay a fine. i understand why the itf is doing it, as a matter of principle, and to prevent future teams from just dropping left and right, but to ignore that this is such a touchy subject is kind of retarded.

it was kind of "weak" of them not to decide to play there but at the same time, they probably wouldnt feel safe in such an environment.

I don't think they ever really intended to play.
They just waited for one thing or another to happen just before they were suppose to arrive, it's not like hightened militery action is anything new, it's just an excuse, because they couldn't say "We aren't coming" without some sort of a 'trigger'.

It has nothing to do with safety, I mean - it isn't like they used the excuse of missiles falling on Sderot as the reason (fat chance of that), it was a political desicion due to the IDF activities in Gaza, it had nothing to do with security or fear, they weren't going to play in any place even remotely dangerous.

Yet another reason why I am so thankful that an angel chose to reveal the truth to Mohammad 1,300 years ago in the Arabian desert. :hehehe:

Most of Indonesia's tennis players are CHRISTIAN if i am correct... this is just muslim extremism behind the sport itself.
I thought sport was suppoed to CROSS boundries such as relgion, race, nationality etc.
