there is no reason why she cannot win the french, she has been in the qtrs, semis, and winning the title.

She can definitely do it, if she commits to getting her fitness better and improving her footwork and movement. It depends on how much work she puts in to put herself into contention to win the title.

Lulu.
Mar 22nd, 2007, 12:57 AM
Shes won it before and she can do it again. So I'd say her chances are very good but since its been so long since she has played on clay it will be improtant for her to do well in the warm ups

Fair. She has momentum. She barely won RG in her BEST year. It's hard to imagine her winning RG this year. I didn't exopect her to win AO though. Clay just really isn't good for her game at all. I'll have to see how fit she gets herself and how consistently she'll play this clay season. Too early.

Serena can beat anybody playing the game at the moment so she has to be considered a good chance of winning the title. She knows how to win GS's so she will be there in the second week at least.

I cant believe I'm responding to such a dumb question (at this point in time)...but I think she has a "fair" chance. She WONT do it if she's in AO shape - that may work on a slow hardcourt, but not on the glacially slow RG clay. So like King said - she has to get fitter and play at least one red clay warm up, and I'd rank her chances just below Mauresmo, Hingis, Kuznetsova.

Wasn't that the whole point at the AO, that she was too slow and couldn't get to the balls she was getting to previously?

She's a contender at every Grand Slam. Since 2000, she's never lost before the quarters @ Roland Garros, so she knows what to do. Clay is so challenging for Serena, and I think that's why she likes playing on it.

2 of her FO losses were to JCap, and since she's not playing, I think her chances just got better TBH. Justine was fortunate in winning that match, and I think that if the did meet again on clay, Serena wouldn't choke.

The only one who choked big time in that match was Justine. Serving for the match and got broken to love with 4 IIRC unforced errors. She tried her best to get Serena back into it.

The first set was a real beat down, a true lesson in clay court tennis. She even managed to have a mini choke in that set as well.

To answer the question of the thread, yes Serena can win, she is the woman to beat at every slam, but it will also greatly depend on Justine's form and mental strength.

Definitely a great shot...There aren't exactly a whole lot of players who are superior clay court only experts like the mens game in certain times...

JH is the only top player who is truly a different player on the dirt. Others play well yes, but they don't exactly grow incredibly in ability like JH seems to.

she is obviously in MUCH better shape than in Australia. she IS a contender, having won the two biggest titles of the year. i don't care if that was on hardcourts, Serena is pumped for the clay season (basically missing the past 2 years of them both), and is ready for the challenge which is promising. i'd LOVE for her to win at Roland Garros

good to very good.... JH is the only other player who is truely better than Serena on clay these days. IF JCAP was around, I would say that would be the other person who would take out Serena, but since she is not, I think she has a great shot at winning the FO behind JH.

Mental advantage does not mean everything. And I'm not sure if she really is clearly mentally stronger than justine:)
Justine is absolutely the one to beat on clay. She has got everything in her game well-suited to that surface and she won FO 3 times in the past 4 years the only loss we could say was due to her illness.
Serena will get a lot to work before she really could take justine out in Roland Garros.

But any way, who knows, she is serena so we can never count her out :p

I think the reason Serena came back and won Miami is because she's so mentally strong. I don't think there's anyone on tour that even comes close. Also, if both play their game, I give Serena the edge just because Justine knows what Serena is capable of.

Well you're the only one still questioning that - Saturday's match proved that if nothing else, Serena is a greater fighter than Justine and way mentally stronger. Justine couldn't even break back when she had 3 BPs on Serena's serve at 5-3. Then couldn't even fight off 1 match point off of a second serve.

She is serena so we can never count her out :p

Exactly.

Given her surging ranking that will seed her high in RG, also the fact that Clijsters will not play bumping Serena up one seed, and her results so far this season. Serena is the one to beat. Justine is also the one to beat, but Serena's already beat her. Of course, that wasn't on clay this season, but it definitely gives Serena confidence in her ability. Serena's win at the AO has given her the chance to win a calendar GS. Her health has improved since the AO, and her fitness is sure to improve. Even though she has competed on clay in a while, Serena's more extensive clay schedule the next month or two will boost her confidence to win the French.

Serena fight was great but Henin was not the same after the fall at the end of 2nd set.Serena is not "way mentally stronger" than Henin and I think Justine is quite satisfied of her match and has gained some confidence from it (despite her loss). It was at Miami (Henin hates playing here), Serena was at home. It will be a lot harder for her to beat Henin on clay with different conditions. But she can do it of course, she's a great player.

Although you can never ever bet against Serena, I want to see how she plays on clay leading up to the FO to make a final decision. Although at this point I'd say she has a very good chance to win it just based on knowing Serena's ability to WIN.

I agree serena was mentally tougher than justine in that match. :) But you can't get an overall conclusion basing on just one match. Every match is different.

And also we shouldn't really ignore the physical factor, you won't become a champ only with a strong heart. Serena clearly was way better than justine in this sense. This was also why she was able to fight off those 2 mps and survived in the 3rd set while justine just couldn't :) Especially after those two falls.

I don't get all the machinations about fitness to win on clay. Even on clay the women still play more of an all-court game than the men do on clay. Women's matches on clay aren't a Nadal/Canas grind-it-out slugfest.

As for the declaration that Serena's fitness wouldn't get her past the 1st round of a men's match, then explain David Nalbandian's success on clay and other surfaces! If you have a problem with how far talent can take a person, then you'll have to take that argument up with God because that is His design plan, whether we like it or not. Yes, hard work can be a great equalizer, but I could practise basketball 10 hours a day for the rest of my life, and I won't ever play like Michael Jordan because I wasn't given his talent. Combine talent with a little bit of hard work and you will still go farther than a little bit of talent and a lot of hard work will ever take you. God decided this - I wish for my sake it were different, but it's not.
