We're all waiting for Venus vs Sharapova but I was interested to see if anyone thought Maria Kirilenko has a shot at taking Venus out.

I think Venus will be pumped but it depends which Venus turns up, if she starts off slowly and Maria stays confident I think she has a chance. She's taken Serena to three sets before, having a lead of 4/2 in the third at Roland Garros in 2004.

Head To Head Venus Leads 1-0
US Open 2005 Venus d Maria 6/1 6/3

Maria's best win this year is to Shahar Peer who Venus defeated in the final of her only tournament very easily.

So who thinks Maria has a chance, is going to win, or is going to lose?

Maria sucks. I hate to say things or vote for Venus in 2 or whatever. But Vee will deliver a crushing :o

Venus would have to play terrible for Kirilenko to win.

I think she has a chance, but I think Venus is going to be fired up for this event, and will beat her in 2 sets

I'll say she has a chance, I wish she had more wins against the top girls. I think Maria would have had more chance if it was a first round match.

Of course Maria has a chance.

The good thing is that nobody is talking about her, all the focus is on Venus and the potential 3R with Sharapova.

I would love to see Maria win. I don't think it will happen though. She has far too little confidence to beat Venus.

Then again, she knows she is he underdog, so......

I want two votes. Yes, she has a chance. Venus has only played seven matches since Wimbledon. But Kirilenko isn't as good as Shahar Peer, and Venus bushwhacked Peer at Memphis. Fedak has a better chance, frankly. She's the one who get a chance to play Venus with rust still in her game. Kirilenko will (probably) face a Venus with a match under her belt.

Sometimes, the ranking system does tell us something. Kirilenko has played 26 tournaments in the twelve months. Venus has played six. Yet Venus is ranked #39, and Kirlenko #34.

if she plays here best game, and believes she can win, yes.

the williams have lost to lower ranked players than kirilenko.

She has a chance to beat her but if Venus brings her "A" game then she will win the match.

i believe that bammer can beat serena...

"can" and "Will" are two different things. It's relatively easy to say she can. That's already been proven.

lol... Venus doesnt have to bring her A game...
Maria is not the same Maria in Beijing...

she doesnt hit the ball as deep as before..!!
her serve is attackable...
doesnt go to the net...
not fast enought to track down Venuss balls...

its simple...
she doesnt have any weapons to beat Venus...

Other than Peer (#17), Venus hasnt faced a player ranked higher than 65  .. We Shall see how she does when she faces the "real" players

All is possible, but if Venus plays well she's going to crush Maria in 2.

Kirilenko is ranked #34.

Compare Peer's game and Kirilenko's. What exactly is Venus facing that she hasn't already this year? Peer hits harder than Kirilenko, runs faster, and has just as good a serve. Also, Peer will fight for every single point. Will Kirilenko?

Lastly, Kirilenko hasn't made a QF this year, and she too, has beaten only one top 20 player.

Other than Peer (#17), Venus hasnt faced a player ranked higher than 65  .. We Shall see how she does when she faces the "real" players

At #34, does Kirilenko somehow qualify as a 'real' player when Peer doesn't?

Maybe you should take a look at Venus' run at the '06 AO.

Everyone who said she has a chance haven't got a clue about tennis :help:

If Venus crashed Peer who would crash Kirilenko ... you do the math

It Depends Alot On Venus Play

Looking at Kirilenko past result and this year result shows that she has very rare success against the top players, where most of her wins are outside the Top 50.

Kirilenko only real success this year are agains Peer on a surface that Peer is not good at (At IW Kirilenko lost to Chakvetadze 6-4, 6-1 and then Chakvetadze lost to Peer 6-4 7-6), and against Pennetta that is now ranked 45...

So unless Kirilenko had done some major upgrade to her game or Venus is on a realy bad day. Kirilenko has no real chance.

Kirilenko did manage to get a set the last 2 years from Maria and Mauresmo, but it won't count muct against Venus with 3 titles here and a 1st round game "for practice".

I think both players always have a chance.. i would like this to be a little later in the tournament say round 4.. i think they both need deep runs here and i hope whoever wins this can makei it 2 r4 or qf

I think Makiri has a chance here. Venus is coming off a wrist injury and there's no better time to push her than here. Makiri will make it a more competitve match than what people think will happen. 3 sets... Makiri in an upset.;)

with this form Maria definetly has no chance at all. And if she goes on like this -without a coach the worst days are waiting fo Krilenko

 Comparing Peer and Kirilenko, we've already seen that Peer was obviously not much for Kirilenko in Tokyo. May have not been the trashing that was seen vs Venus but she easily defeated Peer as well. No one knows which Kirilenko and which Venus they will bring.

As we have seen in her results, Kirilenko hasn't been in the best of form but she has a chance. All players do.

  I can't stand how people try to down play Venus' win in Memphis.   I don't give a damn who Venus played, she could have very well lost in Memphis after her layoff and surgery BUT SHE DIDN"T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So many people her waiting and hoping Venus would lose so they could bash her and she didn't give them the satisfaction!!!!

Of course she has a chance. No point of her even bothering to turn up on the court otherwise. However, I would be really pissed off if Vee (considering that she beats Fedak first) lost to her.
