we are less than a month away from this year's first Fed Cup Ties ... besides Belgium, have any other teams announced their teams yet? The recent injuries to Lena Dementieva and illness of Amelie Mauresmo make them very questionable for their ties

World Group I

USA (confirmed: Serena Williams, Venus Williams, ?, ?) - I expect Perry and King to fill out this team
v BELGIUM (confirmed: Flipkens, Maes, Wickmeyer, Hendler)

RUSSIA (confirmed: Sharapova, Kuznetsova, Petrova, Dementieva (injured)) - if Lena is not healthy, will probably be replaced by Chakvetadze
v SPAIN (?, ?, ?, ?)

FRANCE (most likely: Mauresmo (injured), Golovin, Dechy, Bremond)
v JAPAN (most likely: Sugiyama, Nakamura, Morigami, ?)

CHINA (most likely: Na Li, Peng, Zheng, Yan)
v ITALY (most likely: Schiavone, Santangelo, Pennetta, Vinci)

Mauresmo won't play the tie? Won't she be okay in a month?

If she doesn't play, though, Japan actually has a chance

I don't know the Japanese team. You never know with Ai, she often enjoys giving up her place to give younger girls a chance, but now they are in the top group she should not be able to do this. If Shinobu was still here she would have taken the last place. My presumption is, since Ai and her will try to do the olympics Ayumi Morita will take the last place if they send Ai, Aiko and Akiko. Erika is the Japanese #4 though on rank :o

I don't think so! Roby hasn't been beaten yet in Fed Cup in doubles, she'll be chosen for that. So Tathy is most likely to be left out.
But can't they take 4 players and 1 substitute?

There are a couple of strong teams besides Russia and the USA - Italy has a very solid team, I think they could defend their title. France, similarly - even if Amelie doesn't play, they have a good team. With Safarova's recent rise in form, the Czech Republic are looking good too if Vaidisova plays too.

Yeah, definitely. If Vaidisova plays, the Czech Republic will definitely look a whole love more solid.

But, obviously, Russia and the USA have GOT to be the favorites.

a question here: is Czech Republic and Slovak considered as one country?? cause i think they're not? i might be wrong. Vaidisova and Safarova are from Czech Republic, and Hantuchova is from Slovak, so how can they possibly be on the same team?

Muller and Schruff are banned, as well as Kloesel (:( )

but I fear doubles phenomenon Jasmin Woehr will steal their place (again :o )

But since then, Goven once said that her wishes were far too big, that it was not good for the team spirit! So he keeps her aside.
Tati will definately play in single, as well as Dechy I think (remember it's Goven, former Dechy coach! ), and doubles: Brémond-Loit could happen, or Tati-Brémond if tati plays as well as in Cagnes last year!

Na Li is on fire recently and Yan/Zheng is a strong dubs team......

I agree with casonifan1, the Italian team should in all likelihood be Schiavone, Garbin, Santangelo and Vinci. The Chinese will be a tough team but how often have the Chinese girls played tricky players like Garbin and Vinci, who use all manner of spins and slices to drive their opponents crazy? If I were Corrado Barrazzuti, I might be tempted to pick Garbin and Vinci to play singles against Na Li and Shuai Peng. It's a risky move but it might just pay off.

Well, I partially agree, but to Tathy, I'd add Mara in singles, as the way she plays is ... how to qualify it.... different! Especially on clay! So in my opinion, it could surprise the Chinese players! And after a difficult start in 2007, she's getting better and better, and must be very confident right now! So if I were Corrado, I'd try Mara, leaving Franci and Roby for the doubles!

I could agree with the 4-1 for Israel, although I wouldn't be surpised by a 3-0 score.

All jingoism aside Serbia not being in the World Group makes a mockery of this tournament.

To a certain extent but if only one of them is willing to show up each year then they deserve to remain in the Euro/Africa zone (unless Timotic/Lukic/Jovanovic can step up). It would be even more of a mockery if they were in the World Group but only bothered to show up for the relegation ties like Federer.
