Clijsters doubts she will play U.S. Open in her farewell year
By RAF CASERT, AP Sports Writer
March 19, 2007

BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) -- Don't expect too much from Kim Clijsters during her farewell season.

After pulling out of the French Open, the Belgian announced she also might drop the U.S. Open from her schedule because her honeymoon with American basketball player Brian Lynch is just weeks before the Aug. 27-Sept. 9 Grand Slam tennis tournament.

As for Wimbledon, she again plans to take it easy.

"I'll be doing some cooking and will be training a bit," Clijsters said Monday on her Web site.

The fifth-ranked Belgian could limit herself to about six events before bowing out at the WTA event in Stuttgart, Germany, from Oct. 1-7.

"Tennis is nearly over. A couple of more tournaments, saying goodbye mostly and then enjoying having fun with the other players," Clijsters said.

The 23-year-old Clijsters has been battling injuries for much of her career, and increasingly so over the last few years. In 2006, a left wrist injury prevented her from entering the U.S. Open to defend her title, and from playing in the Fed Cup final.

It has made the former top-ranked player increasingly yearn for a conventional life.

"I'll finally be starting the new part of my life I have been longing for so hard: family, friends, married life and the dogs I have difficulty with in leaving behind," she wrote on her site.

This year, Clijsters won her 34th career singles title in Sydney and reached the Australian Open semifinals, only to return home with a sore hip. She dropped out of the Gaz de France event to be fully fit to play at the Diamond Games in Antwerp, her last stand in Belgium, where she lost to Amelie Mauresmo in the final.

The "fantastic goodbye" by 14,500 fans at the Sports Palace gave her "the energy again to start training" for the Sony Ericsson Open, which starts Thursday in Key Biscayne, Florida.

She will drop the French Open because she has to prepare her July 14 wedding in her hometown of Bree and a later party in the United States. With a honeymoon to follow, it will give her little time to concentrate on Flushing Meadows.

"It is difficult to know whether I will be able to make it to the U.S. Open," Clijsters said.

This pretty much confirms what we've all been saying. She's not playing this year to win.

You are all such a bunch of freaking morons. Too stupid to understand that she herself is not constantly talking about her retirement but that the media and certain idiots on this board are using the same information to write one article after another and starting one more assinine thread, using the same old information. Instead of bitching about Kim talking about her retirement why don't you blast the idiots who are constantly rehashing old info.

I guess it proves one thing and that is that Kim, loved or hated has made an impression on people. Compared to the majority of players who can't even induce a yawn in most people:devil:

I Wish she would either make a serious go for it during her comeback or simply bow out and end the frenzy... but its her decision and she earned the right to end on her terms.. Seems strange she wouldn't want to play the USO, her only major, one last time in favor of Wimbledon where she's probably had the least GS success.

Well, the reason she's retiring is due to her being tired of all the injuries. I'm sure she's thinking to herself, "I'm retiring because I'm tired of hurting myself, and I'll be damned if I do it the last year of my career."

IMHO, I see her as such a people person, I would find it hard for her to stay retired @ 23 and not want to come backk to the tour. Hell, it seems like she enjoys the comraderie more than anybody else on the tour.

Brian and myself are now pretty busy with the preparations for our marriage and it is quite a demanding job. Tennis is nearly over. A couple of more tournaments, saying goodbye mostly and then enjoying having fun with the other players. First Miami and a couple of weeks later Warzaw. I'll have to cancel for the French Open as I'll be in America that week to prepare the wedding party there. I wouldn't want to get injured weeks before my wedding either ;-) In Wimbledon, I'll be accompanied by Brian, my sister and the two fathers and this in a house only a couple of yards from the stadium. I'll do some cooking and will be training a bit.

Apparently Kim's only concern isn't cooking meals, she also wants to ensure she can walk down the aisle (no ankle injuries), hold her bouquet (no arm injuries), have the first kiss (no abdominal strain), and fuck all night (no sore hammies from splits).

While I was never a Clijsters fan, I can understand why so many fans don't approve of this nonchalant attitude towards her farewell tour. However....from Kim's perspective, I can see why she is playing such a limited schedule. I would think that if she played a fuller schedule and had a more aggressive attitude towards winning - she would miss the tour more after retiring....especially at such a young age.
She is redirecting her priorities in life and I wish her all the best.

Where do you get the idea so many fans are whining about her decision. The morons on this thread who are whining and posting so much drivel are not Kim fans. The affection she will get in the real world and at the tournaments she decides to play will be warm and nothing like the hostile comments from the people here who basically want to deprive real Kim fans of any opportunity to see her agin by sayin she should retire now.

Nope, you are paying attention to her.
She never asked you to care about what
she says or does, yet, here you are. Hmmm.....

Back on topic,

I think Kim really has just wanted to say good-bye at a few
tournaments, so she decided to play as she didn't just want
to maybe not play, but show-up and take any amount of
spotlight away from any tournament play.

I think she is just ready to have tennis be done with
and get on with all the other things she wants to have
and explore in her life.

What I find annoying is that so many people act like every
player has to want to be like a Navratilova or even Evert
wanting to play well into or past their mid-30's.

Every lady is a competitor on the tour but, that does not mean
every lady has the same aspirations as far as tennis is concerned.

That's besides the point. It's her personal choice to retire but if you want to play on the tour, then at least don't give the impression that you don't give a shit about it. It's disrespectful to other players and to fans. There are players out there who are willing to play 100%. She can have fun with her boyfriend or with her hitting partner.

I really hopes she gets knocked out of Wimbledon as early as possible. That way we won't have to hear about her farewell sh*t for too long.

:help:

Anyway she only planned to play 2 tournaments afterwards. Would it kill you if she appeared in 2 more Tier IIs in Europe?

What does such a stew consist of?!?

That's besides the point. It's her personal choice to retire but if you want to play on the tour, then at least don't give the impression that you don't give a shit about it. It's disrespectful to other players and to fans. There are players out there who are willing to play 100%. She can have fun with her boyfriend or with her hitting partner.

Maybe she should issue you a personal apology for posting about cooking on her blog?

Yet despite all of Kim's lack of effort and half assed attitude she's still ranked #4 in the race having played 3 tournaments while the majority of her oh so hard working peers are still trailing her while having played 5,6 and even 7 tournaments. Ouch:o
Suddenly I understand all the bitterness:bolt:

How retarded can you get? Don't read about it if you don't want to hear about it.

Her retirement is forced upon me everywhere that discusses tennis.
You are behaving as if Kim hired you as her PR Rep. If Kim's retirement sh*t is annoying the crap out of me and I am not even a fan of hers, I can imagine how annoyed her die hard fans like you must be feeling.

If Kim was pulling from tournaments becasue she was injured that would have been understandable but to hear that she is missing two slams & numerous tournaments because of her wedding, Oh please, she should have retired from last year instead of torturing us all with this bullsh*t farewell. :fiery:

All you have to do then is not open the threads and not act like she forces you to read about it.

Watch her play the USO, then win the other six events she entered.

She'll pull a "Davenport" and miraculously say "hey, maybe I won't follow my dreams and retire, maybe i'll just keep playing and torturing my body"

What's the point in having a "final year" when you're not playing crap. She should have just retired after she won the U.S. Open.

Good Lord, if this were Serena Williams she would be roasted at the stakes for all manner of crimes:

1. Wasting her talents
2. Disgracing the tour
3. Not caring about fans
4. Not caring about the sport that has given her millions and allows her to retire at such a young age.

She just needs to get off the tour and concentrate on being married!!! Besides, when she's playing her competitiveness is not there. she seems like she would rather be choosing china and place settings for the wedding!!!

The wedding date said it all. if Kim really wanted to give this last year her all as she claimed she would be waiting til at least the end of this year to tie the knot. she knows as do we that she can change those plans in a second. so this really
is a half assed effort on her part.

she is already preparing herself for a life of mediocrity as a housewife.

I find that a little offensive. Some people think being a housewife is one of the greatest gifts you can give, to be there 100% for your children. It isn't the only route, but if you can afford that lifestyle, and you want to do it, then you should. Everyone needs to get off their golden throne and remember that she's been injured off and on since she was 17. She's got the body of a 40 year old at 23.

I read an article a couple months ago about athletes who had hip replacements at 36 because their bodies had fallen apart.

She's tasted the top of tennis and won't settle for less if she goes full-time, and she can no longer go full-time without jeopardizing her health. I'm not a huge Clijsters fan, but I have to say it's her career, and we shouldn't be so quick to judge all the reasons she's doing what she's doing.

Yes Kim,

I think you've misunderstood the crucial point that the sensible critics (comme moi  ) are trying to make. We aren't pleading with Kim not to retire. We are criticising her decision to drag her retirement out (eg compared with the style in which Andre Agassi did it - which was rather like him - short and sweet ;) ).

I think the constructive critics are also questioning Kim's commitment to give her final months on tour "200% effort" or words to that effect. When she made those statements I wondered what 200% meant (I mean, isn't 100% enough?) but to be honest I don't see how she has given anywhere near "200%".

I Wish she would either make a serious go for it during her comeback or simply bow out and end the frenzy... but its her decision and she earned the right to end on her terms.. Seems strange she wouldn't want to play the USO, her only major, one last time in favor of Wimbledon where she's probably had the least GS success.

Strange she doesn't want to play the American hard court summer season, her favorite time of the year, particularly since she's said she wanted to play all her favorite tours.
What annoys me the most about this is, when announcing her retirement she said she would give her best the last 2 years. :fiery:
Also, while she was so explicit in announcing her retirement, she is all of a sudden silently retiring much sooner, and above this: in 2 phases. Her last tournament would be Antwerp 2008, which would have included playing AO etc. All of a sudden, silently, this became the end of 2007. No explanation, nothing. Just a month ago in a long, substantial and nice interview on Belgian tele, she firmly affirmed she would definately play after Wimbledon. Now all of a sudden she isn't playing anything substantial after Wimbledon, thus in fact isn't playing after W afterall.

Why couldn't she just have married half a year later? Or a year later if she wants to marry during summer so much.

I know and fully understand the main reason for her retirement is she is tired of having to do exercises every day for 2 or more hours (again EVERY DAY) to prevent injury and treat her injuries; still it annoys me the way she is handling her retirement.

:fiery:  :fiery: :fiery:    :dog: her dog she tumbled over
