mashas is so excited cause of the extra cash that she will get from Russian tennis fed, if they win

Personally, I think the Fed Cup is pointless for lots of reasons, one of which is that tennis is a solo, personal sport. Fed Cup is fake, not remembered by the public, and a waste of effort. I'd rather see a 5th Slam. On another continent, on a different surface. I nominate China on fake grass, or carpet!

I enjoyed it years ago....when it was played in Germany over one week....

I'd doubt she would play if Olympic representation wasn't linked to fed cup participation for Russian tennis.

it's ridiculous how these players live and train in the US but then represent their former homeland in international competition. There should be a regulation which states in order to represent your country you need to spend x amount of time living there during the year.

Did she take Venus' or Serena's place ?

I'd doubt she would play if Olympic representation wasn't linked to fed cup participation for Russian tennis.True.

Sharapova turned down every opportunity to play Fed Cup until now, when she HAS to be available to be Olympic eligible.

If she is really excited, she'll play all year, not just against Spain, who have no top 20 players.

ok, ok.. she didn't seem too interested...
i'll tell you why i think that is this way:
*not because of lack of love for her country.
*because the other russians dont like her as much.
*because she was continuously playing semis finals etc so where to take the time from.
*because she doesnt seem to be a good team player though she won some doubles titles (but with vera and lil'masha who both like her)

->

she wants to play now

*because of the olympic games. she always wanted to represent russia and win a gold medal since she was a kid
*because its good for her to play on court
*because of her schedule
*there are tons of other russians who can beat just anyone else

this should show this matter is a bit more complex...

isnt it risky for Russia to take her now on team..I mean given her current form, :tape: esp if the tie is played on clay..

Pova plays Fed Cup to be Olympics eligible? Probably true.

Venus and Serena start playing tennis again in 2007 to ensure they aren't passed up for the Olympics? Probably true.

What is the problem with meeting the conditions required to compete in an event? It's a very reasonable way to get what you want. Good on Pova... and Venus and Serena.

Dan32 dont like the truth thats the problem...blind to it in fact.. MS can do whatever she likes ,if she needs to play to qualify for Olympics then so be it ,no prob ,but she can cut all the "oooh its so great to play for Russia ,I am so excited " crap ,she aint fooling anyone with half a brain..

Sharapova has turned down every opportunity to be on a Russian Fed Cup team.
Every one of them.
Showing up against the weakest team possible is meaningless. Except it keeps her Olympic eligible.

If Sharapova wants to play Fed Cup, then show up for difficult ties. Not this.

LOL how come she's "so excited" for an event nobody really cares about!?
It's for the Olympics. Nothing bad about that though.:p after all:
Fed Cup is the shit

What is the reason for playing in the Olympics?? TO REPRESENT YOUR COUNTRY.
Why the hell else would she want to go? To sight-see around Beijing??
Everyone needs to get over this non-Russian bs because its not for you to decide Maria's nationality and shes made it clear time after time that she is a proud Russian and wants to represent her country at the highest level of sport.

The reason you play in the Olympics is to play in THE OLYMPICS
Whats the point in playing in the Olympics if you dont strive to be able to stand up on the podium and hear your national anthem?

I give up....

goldenlox
Mar 20th, 2007, 01:19 AM
You have to win gold to hear your anthem. Being in the Olympics is an experience most athletes want to have.

Because it's a prestigeous event to play in.

So what?

On other hand, for Russian sport and tennis is much better solution Olympic gold than FED CUP success, and i dont see where is problem here.

MaSha have (much) better chances for gold than Sveta, Nadia, Elena, Anna, Nastya, Dinara or Davidenko, Safin, Youzny, Tursunov...

MaSha want play at Olympic, NIKE, Motorola, Canon also want that, but also IOC, ITF and WTA want that - whole world want to see her in Bejing, but only some Russians is not happy!? Why? Her medal will be count also for Russia, not only for her!?

This thread is about Fed Cup, which Sharapova still hasn't played.
Even though she won a major almost 3 years ago.
