IW is an old story now... I wish Maria would win in Miami, she needs a title. Well, maybe a new outfit helps. I like the old one too, but you know, the new can bring her some luck:p :)

Welcome to Miami Masha.

Feel the fresh air, it's a new start and there's no pressure whatsoever.
Just do your thing honey. You'll be fine.

I don't care where she goes in this tournament as long as she finds her form and plays a couple of matches.

Canīt wait to see her new outfit. Still believe the AO outfit was jinxed

Go Masha :bounce:

At IW, I thought Pova would go Whaleing, instead, the PovaPartisans went wailing! So:

Is she injured?
Is she ill?
Is it possible she is that rusty and out of form?

I like her attitude during the interview after the Vera match: "I am not making excuses. There's no need for that".

But it does leave us fans with little to pin our hopes on. Pova has not played well starting in the 2006 YEC Semi Final and continuing to present. I am very worrried about her prospect for Miami and 2007, in general. Whatever the issues are, I hope Miami is the beginning of the recovery - if she plays.

Regardless of all that, Shriek on, Pova!!! Best of luck in Miami!

Well, I have confident that she can do a great tournament. But she has to play more matches to have more confident, and if she has tough players so early, it will be hard for her, I'm just quite pessimist.
And everytime, I hope she won't have a tough draw, so don't be suprised :p .

Well, I was nice with you, but now, you're really getting on my nerves.

First, why are you distorting my words?

I don't know if you know the meaning of 'tough', because Maria played tough matches during Indian Wells.
A tough player who Maria plays against is not necessarily a top 5 player or whatever, sorry, but you have to know that.
Between 'tough draw' and 'tough matches', there is a difference, Maria had a good draw in Indian Wells, but she didn’t play easy matches.

Moreover, I don’t even know why you're underestimate Jankovic and others.

I just said I wanted her to get an easy draw to have more confident after her bad lose, that's all. I didn’t mention what is an easy draw or a tough one :o .

So stop aggressing me, I'm fed up.
I just notice you really want to get the last word, so, if you answer to my post, I won't answer to you, I'm not a kid.

I disagree with you...I'm a huge ELENA DEMENTIEVA fan and also a fan from ROGER FEDERER and I have to say, for me would be better to put just the top seeds on their way than low seeds
low seeds are desparete to win and they have nothing to lose
and the top ranked player has a way more pressure

So, if you ask me: pick a draw to Lena and Roger, easy one or hard one?
I would say, wihtout blink: HARD ONE

so yeah, play low ranked players can be a way worse sometimes....

Who cares who Maria has to play? She can't control anything but the way she plays. If she is healthy and in form, she can win this. Against *anybody*. If not, she will struggle.

That goes for every one of the top players. An off day and they will get bounced. No one is immune to that. Look at the carnage that happened in the 4th round at IW if you need an example. Only 2 of 8 favorites advanced that day.

Honestly, if Maria had Henin, Kuznetsova, Mauresmo, Hingis, Clijsters and both Williams in her path, and each of them lost before playing Maria, people would still find a way to say Maria had it easy. That is the nature of the beast when you make more money than the rest combined. She is hated because she is a success story.

Fact is, Maria, just like anybody else, will have to play the players who win their matches. She isn't playing prospective or potential matches. And she isn't afraid of anybody.

tought so as well ,as long as she is in a good form than the draw doesn't count ! why don't they understand that ? it isn't the draw the reason that she lost in IW cause she had to deal with players that she can beat ..she lost because she wasn't in a good form ,case closed the draw doesn't coun't !

Oh please, I really don't understand because you're always changing your mind.
I know the draw doesn't count if she is in a good shape, but as much as you know, she isn't. And you want her to get a tough draw... So, I don't know what your true opinion is.

You have to wonder if somebody at ESPN had a hand in that draw, just to make it interesting.

I doubt that a player at the elite level gives two cents about who they might possibly play--it's about who they are playing next.

Right now, Maria needs to worry about round 2, just play her game. If she does that, she can beat either/both Williams. Anyone who's seen them play knows that. If they all win a match or two, things might get interesting, but that's a long way off. Bammer, Saferova, Kirilenko will all have a say in how it shakes out as well.

Venus then Serena? Venus was amazing in the Memphis final, I am worried about her alone, forget Serena for the moment. I do hope/wish that Maria's serve is much better, Venus will be looking for it. She was 3/4's of the way to the service line, blasting return winners against Peer. Maria can do it though  :yeah:

Didn't say she'd have to rely on it. Even in her worst serving performances, she gets enough free points with her first serve and hits enough winners to be "in" every game she plays. It isn't like she's losing her all of her service games at love.

She struggled last week because she hit 150 unforced errors in three matches. You do that, you aren't going to win very often. She hits a third less UEs, she gets by Vera in two. She was rusty. She has enough game to beat 95% of the players out there even serving double digit DFs. Hopefully she learned a lesson and has hit the practice court this past week.

Tired of hearing all this shit about the Williams. All because of one match in a tournament where Maria was clearly subpar from the start. Watch her wipe the court with Venus at Miami '05 and Zurich '04, when her game wasn't anywhere near as developed as it is now, and when Williams was closer to being at her best. If Masha is "on", she can make this easy.

I doubt if she is 100% fit, and has been struggling since the pre-season EXO in HK. If she plays, I hope she does not aggravate whatever injury is the problem - leg or shoulder.

The last thing she needs is to get pasted again by one of the Williamses.

Iīm happy with this draw. If she can get past Venus and Serena, it can only be good for her confidence. Of course, with Mariaīs current form, itīs a BIG if.

I wasnīt able to see any Maria matches from IW, but sounds like she is still stuggling with her serve. I donīt know if itīs only confidence-related, but if it is, I think itīs only good for Maria having tough matches early on that might fire her up and get the best out of her.

IF she can past Venus and Serena (if all of them make the 3rd and 4th round that is) it will do wonders for her confidence, if she would lose early however.....that would just be aweful for her confidence I think.

not happy one bit, the worse draw she's had yet. she is a fighter and that means a lot, she could surprise a lot of people. if she was playing like normal i would have faith, but i'm a little unsure. think if she gets past venus, she'll also beat serena. venus scares me for both maria and for serena.

Brashkoala says TTC will be airing men's and women's matches starting 3/24--that means the possibility of at least one and maybe two Masha matches on the tube this weekend.

I can't record these since I'll be down there--I hope someone with TTC wil record them and share.

I want to see how I look on TV.

This may be the first time in history that American TV has better coverage of a women's event than Europe.

Well, the good news for you is that the one who survives probably becomes the favorite to win the tournament. Or at least a co-favorite.

Mikey B
Mar 20th, 2007, 06:51 PM
i think that this has been done for ratings purposes..

this way 3 of the biggest names in the sport are almost garunteed (sp?) to face off... if venus, serena, and maria were scheduled to meet later on in the tourney, in the quarters, semi's or even the final then there's no way of being sure that the 3 of them will survive, but by having them so close together so early they have a couple of matches that are worthy of grand slam status...

schorsch
Mar 20th, 2007, 11:11 PM
thats what i thought, too. totally otherwise they wouldnt have taken the pre pacific life open rankings... last year the took the post plo rankings...

grrr, i hope masha will kick their butts. this way a title will mean so much more. you know beating such strong players from the 3rd round on. not even a grand slam is this hard ! ! !

Dan, where's that fainting smiley??? lol be good to bring that out to express how I feel about this crap of a draw. It would have been better if Masha was playing with confidence and serving well...but nooooo....

*sigh* and all the arrogance at GM just turns me off...bleh...havent been posting there for days...

I just hop for the best for Maria...cant stress enough how impt her serve will be. :awww:

Along with most (all?) of you I've been a little bummed at Maria's stroke of luck, and her play, lately, and have been searching for some answers. Maybe part of that is due to the lambasting she's taken over in GM. Reading this thread at Maria's forum put things into perspective for me:

http://bb.twiihosting.net/sharapova/viewtopic.php?t=2021

This post, in particular, says alot:

"I agree with Pen84guins. Let's see: Finalist at Melbourne... that's bad? Pulls a hamstring in Tokyo and has to nurse it, comes back up with her serve a bit dicey... I have to say, if this represents the worst downturn Maria experiences in her career, then she really will be the luckiest girl in the world.

So she was out of Indian Wells before the quarterfinals? Well, [B]so were Hingis, Jankovic, Petrova, Chakvetadze, Safina, and Ivanovic. (Kuznetsova was the only top ten woman still standing at that point and she fell in the end.) On the men's side, Blake went down early, Hewitt, Safin and the mighty Federer himself!

Interesting that in none of those cases did we read dire warnings of career-theatening disaster.

I would have liked to read a story about why so many of the top tens prematurely crashed and burned in the desert--but I did not get to. Granted, the subject is probably too deep for "Friday Night Lights" mentalities poorly equipped to comment on global sports.

But I suspect that, if you check back, you'll find that many of the ominous prognoses are penned by pundits who have dug Maria's grave at every opportunity since the morning after she won Wimbledon in 2004. Agendas are being polished there and I take them with a grain of salt.

Sure, I'm a FAN, bigtime. To me, Maria is the greatest thing to come along since the Internet, and will be throughout her career, whatever her ups and downs. But I've seen enough in my life to feel safe ignoring the doomsayers. She has many wonderful surprises ahead for us.

BTW, I'm totally proud about Maria's forthcoming participation in the Fed Cup. There's a great little MP3 interview with her through the Fed Cup site at www.fedcup.com."

***************

And with that, I am going to sign off by saying that I will be cheering for Maria through thick and thin, this weekend and forever, and no one is going to make me feel bad about it. I feel like I am going into battle--I will try and pull her through, from way up in the nosebleed section, but these Williams fans are going to be obnoxious, I fear. It could be ugly. I will go down swinging, however.

Looks like I'll get to watch Masha twice in person.

Take care, enjoy the tennis on TV, and I'll "talk" to you guys and gals next week when I get back from Miami.

not happy one bit, the worse draw she's had yet. she is a fighter and that means a lot, she could surprise a lot of people. if she was playing like normal i would have faith, but i'm a little unsure. think if she gets past venus, she'll also beat serena. venus scares me for both maria and for serena.

Same thoughts. For having seen Venus destroy Peer and serve/return like a killer, I'd say Venus is probably the hardest test for Maria. She has to fix her game in the 2nd round if she wants to try to beat her.

Later, I walked past a few practice courts with WTA players. Here are a few of the pairings I noticed...

Svetlana Kuznetsova and Maria Sharapova. Intense practice. They played out points, both of them hugging the baseline and hitting shots right on the lines, so it almost looked like they were hitting rapid half-volleys. After one scorching return of serve by Kuznetsova that nailed the sideline, Sharapova examined the line, looking for a mark for a good 15 seconds. Was she practicing for instant replay?

Guys, don't forget that Maria beat Venus in 2 sets 6-4 6-3 right there at Miami in 2005. And Venus was playing very well, too. And Maria had just beaten Justine in the round before.

I really think, besides her injuries, the difference is her CONFIDENCE. If Maria could get back some of the fearlessness she felt at 17 .... anything would be possible!

But we'll just have to see how things pan out tomorrow.

there is no chance the match will be shown on ES-2? Probably "no comment" way.. Damn, how can they miss such a historic match!!! I can't believe it. What we'll have instead? Kind of handball or something?

Anyway, GOOD LUCK, Maria!!!

Humongous relief for all of us!
13 Df but 8 aces also with that! The thing is that Masha is forced to go for it on the 2nd serve and I think she's managed to scrape away this time. This will surely boost her confidence... still... Serena left so Masha must stay focused here...

It’s strange, but I can’t even remember the last time I was this happy about Maria winning a match :woohoo:

I was a nervous wreck for the last 2:30 hours lol, I can’t believe she actually did it, being down 1-3 in the third and two points away from defeat at 4-5  and even a double in that last game  Awesome win Maria! :yeah:

Seeing from the comments, it doesn't look like either of them played well. But she survived on grittiness and this should be great for her confidence. :D We'll see whether she gets the rematch with Serena or if she plays against Safarova. But gosh, I am so happy about that win. :D

Following the live score during this kind of match without actually seeing the action is a very stressful experience. It gives me palpitations. Sometimes the scoreboard takes a long time getting updated, and I go  wondering what's happening. As soon as the match was over I got up and did a Jimmy Connors-style (c. 1991 US Open) victory celebration.

She did that in Tokyo this year actually ;)

Her serve stats are not so bad actually, she does have 13 double faults, but the match lasted 2:30 hours, she served 8 Aces and even 1 on her second serve, winning 67% of first serve points, which was below 50% in the first set, so in these windy conditions that's not so terrible :)

I take the match as it is...H2H now against Venus is 3-1. :woohoo:

Just watched the match and Yuri didn't come on court. I don't get it. Are they preventing getting embarrassed or something? I mean, it's not as if Maria doesn't look to her father after every single point....I would think he'd be the best one out there. But I guess because of his intensity and reputation, they are being quite careful.

Her hitting partner for Miami came out today. It was funny to watch really even Maria couldn't help but smile. He basically looked like a semi-scared dude out there. I guess this is his debut performance so it's pretty understandable. I mean is the guy even a coach? It didn't help that he looked small next to Maria. Everything he said, Yuri could have easily said. I really want Yuri out there.
