If Maria finds form in the first few rounds, Jelena won't be a problem for her. Especially with Jelena's current injury situation...

Not a bad draw for Maria....hopefully she gets a chance in the 2nd Round to work back into things comfortably. Hingis is seeded to be Maria's SF opponent should they both make it

Some dangerous players there. Don't see Arvidsson or Krajicek posing too much threat, they both look to be out of form. Zvonareva, Li Na and especially Jankovic (if her ankle holds up) could be tough.

If Maria's injury is completely gone then I expect her to win really, it's a pretty weak field for IW and the American hardcourts are where she plays her best tennis. But more than anything I just want to see her healthy and playing some good ball again.

Not a bad draw at all :)

Zvonareva could prove to be a tough match in the R16 if she keeps her heads together.

I'm a little surprised Jankovic didn't withdraw to rest her ankle, but I guess she's prepared to go for it because of the rest day between matches. Sure, if it's healed then she'll be a tricky opponent, though Maria should still be able to come through.

Go Maria

I really don't know why some in GM are saying it's a tough draw (finally I guess :o ). As you guys say, it's not bad at all. I like it actually. If Maria has fully recovered and has sorted out her serving woes, she has a very good chance to do well here again and retain her title.

The draw is rather an easy one, only Jankovic can cause some problems and really Hingis won't do any harm to Maria (of course if she gets past Daniela  )... There's no one in this draw that Maria is not capable of beating.
She should use this tournament as a preparation for Miami, the field there is much stronger than in IW.

i think its a good draw... exciting if she meets jankovic in the quarters and hingis in the semis... they would be great matches if both players are fit... i dont want to see maria vs kuznetsova in the final, im really hoping for a sharapova/vaidisova final...

Whew, she has the first set. But she should have won that set at least 20 minutes ago when she was serving for it!

I don't understand why this is happening to her. Hitting 3-4 straight double faults is nearly unheard of from her. And she did it when she was serving for it.

I think she should just take it game by game and focus on making her serves in in that game because I noticed that after she had a couple games where she didn't DF, she served better.

Haven't you ever been in one of those places where nothing you do seems to work the way it's supposed to? You know - you do everything exactly the same way you've been doing for the last x months or even years, but now, for some reason, it just doesn't work any more? So the coach is watching and he's seeing the same thing he's been seeing forever, and you watch film and tape but what you see is exactly the same but now it diesn't work for some reason? And then all of a sudden, you discover that you have grown an inch and you didn't realize it, or you gained an extra 2 pounds in your butt, and you haven't weighed in ages.

That's what's going to turn out to be Masha's problem. She probably grew another inch or two since the YEC last year and just hasn't figured it out yet. And when something like that happens it's so small nobody notices but it totally destroys your synchronicity and your timing and your power and everything. See, that's the whole problem. She's just too damn tall! But she will figure it out and get it back together again. I just hope she does it in the next 48 hours.

She's just too damn tall! But she will figure it out and get it back together again. I just hope she does it in the next 48 hours.

I didn't think about that at all! You might be right though...

I expected better from Maria. It seems like her confidence level is at zero. I'm kind of worried due to her serve. Hopefully, Dechy is a crappy player, TRUST ME

Sharapova did not appear for a post-match news conference, customarily mandatory. A WTA Tour official, Amy Binder, the tour's senior manager, communications, said the player was not feeling well. Binder said she did not know if Sharapova had become ill during her match.

I hadn't thought of that and the last time she grew it certainly affected her for a while. But surely it is very unlikely she's grown again just before her 20th birthday.

Not the best start for Maria. 50 UEs! That's 12 games worth on its own! So MAria must have won everything else.

She seems to be back where she was before the lay-off. Hopefully she can parallel Justine, who also started her recent tournaments playing poorly, and then came through to win.

Trust me. Nothing having to do with Maria Sharapova is out of the question. I've already seen stranger things. And it doesn't even have to be that much - a half-inch can affect her swing, her power line, her timing, everything. But like I said, I just hope she gets it together. I didn't really expect her to come out strong after laying out for as long as she did, but I figured she would be back to form by the second set, not the third round!

But she is nothing if not determined. She can perservere. But like someone else said earlier, strength of charagter and strength of mind can't win it all.

In most places her weight is still listed at 130---same as Wimbledon, 2004.

I think she looks better, and looks stronger than she did then. She weighs more than 130 now--I suspect it has helped her in endurance and strength of serve----I have seen a lot of tournaments where she gets stronger as it goes along.

Masha wins the first set.

Look at the positives here--her first serve percentage has to be pretty high. I've been listening on the radio since 3-1 and she hasn't had to hit many 2nd serves. Has only made one DF in that time (not sure about games 1-4). Dechy is obviously returning well--lots of long rallies. It looks like the problem for Maria today is UEs, rather than the serve.

It sounded like Dechy was playing pretty well, from the radio broadcast. Maria still had loads of UEs, and not a whole lot of winners. Missing shots wide and long by small margins. I've been seeing the word "choke" alot in connection with Maria's play at IW. How the &%^$ can you be "choking" if you're four for four in sets won?

http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tennis/news/story?id=2795030

Top-ranked Maria Sharapova, the defending champion of the Pacific Life Open, stayed on course to repeat with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Nathalie Dechy of France in the third round Sunday.

Sharapova is playing in her first tournament since early February and continues to struggle to regain her form. She had four double faults and just one ace, and made 47 unforced errors to go with 24 winners in a match that was played in 90-degree heat and lasted 1 hour, 40 minutes. She has made 97 errors in her two wins, overcoming her miscues by playing well on key points.

"I think that's to be expected," she said after moving into the fourth round of this $2.1 million event. "When you don't compete for that amount of time, it's normal. I definitely feel like these matches are getting the rough stuff [out of the way].

"It's just good to be back on court and being in some tight situations. I miss that after a while."

Sharapova had been idle since retiring from her semifinal at Tokyo with a left hamstring strain, and she said some of her service inconsistency stems from the injury.

"In Tokyo I struggled with [the serve] a little bit," she said. "Part of it was probably the leg because that's how I injured it. That limited me from serving a lot in practice."

Sharapova's next opponent will be No. 15 seed Vera Zvonareva, who advanced with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Victoria Azarenko on a day that the top women advanced.

As at the Australian Open, I'm gonna post a warning about Vera Zvonareva--I think she's one of the few players who can beat Maria even when Maria is playing well. A super defender, solid serve, good, hard groundies and a solid net game. If it weren't for her head, she'd be top ten for sure.

I suspect that this will be a very close match yet again. If Maria wins in two, it'll be something like 7-5 7-5, but I think a 3-setter is a possibility. Much like her matches with Golovin and Kirilenko, when she plays a training partner/friend, it's close.

I do think Masha will prevail, however. She's just tougher in those big point situations.

As far as her game, in my opinion quite alot of the murmurs of her decline are greatly exaggerated. She is playing as the number 1 in the world, something that is still new to her. When you are number 1, there is a target on your back. Everyone who plays her plays just a little harder now. For almost everyone she plays, a win over a number 1 would (and likely will) be their greatest ever accomplishment. She's winning matches, even though she's not at her best. And winning them in straight sets. Some of her peers at the top, who are playing lots of 3-set matches in early rounds, should be more worried, IMO.

I think more than anything, she really needs to work on keeping her focus at the beginning of a new set. Long before her recent serve problems started, she has had this tendency to win a set and then drop serve in her next service game. Not sure why that is, but it will become a big problem for her against good servers. Fortunately, there doesn't seem to be anybody she can't break when she's on her game and really puts her mind to it.

Lastly--is this finally the time we get to see a Masha-Nicole match? I'm hoping.

I agree that Zvonereva is going to be a much stronger opponent than her ranking would imply, but I also believe that Maria has fouond her spot - that secret niche where the mindset is in focus, the body is working the way it was intended to, the serve is finally on, the groudstokes are finally hitting the sweetspot, just everything is comng together. And she is just going to get stronger and stronger as this tournament and all her remaining tournaments throughout this season progress.

In the time that I have been watching and cheering for Maria, I have always felt that one day she would get to that secret place, and suddenly there would be a Siberian TennisStorm that would simply devistate the competition and sweep the earth as Maria rose to the throne of her Queendom. If you watch her carefully and listen to her, you can see it in her eyes, you can see it in the way she carries herself, you can hear it in her voice. In fact you can even read it in her words as she writes her "Weekly Doodles" to her fans.

So far so good, except I'm ready to take back my prediction. Maybe it will be in the quarters that Maria Rises UP.

If she gets there, she HAS to rise up; Jankovic or Li will definitely punish bad serving.

Well that's true but it's beginning to look like she's going to have to get a step stool just to get out of this match. She's starting to turn ir around now, it looks like but I'm following the live score and its making me a nervous wreck.

Good fight from both.

Much better

And finally Maria's improving, rising her game now. She tries to serve heavy, it doesn't really work but she's gonna find a way to have her serve back, let's hope this

But I repeat, she hits very good groundies!Even her FH is lethal

It's not really a good match so far. They're both making lots of mistakes.
And Masha just made a crucial df having a for 2-0, now it's 2-1 and her serve but still... Hope she can raise her serve.

Well if she can't serve heavy, she might as well try to at least serve CLEAN. That way there'll be less pressure on her 2nd serve...
