With this week as the #1 she surpasses Venus Williams who was #1 for 11 weeks, Maria is now (starting this week) 12 weeks at #1, add next week and she even goes past Sanchez Vicario with 13 weeks at #1 :yeah:

LOL Venus only spent 11 weeks at the number one spot but she dominated for about 2 years so doesn't matter if she surpasses her (even if I would have loved Venus stays longer at the top to avaoid misunderstoods :awww: ) . I'm expecting much better from Maria and I know she won't deceive us!
Go Maria!

If Maria manages to do well at Indian Wells and Miami it's tough to see her losing the top spot for a while, considering Justine's got RG to defend and then Amelie's got Wimbledon (though I guess she could pick up some more points on the clay).

It's looking likely that she'll pass Capriati, Clijsters and Austin too in the next few months. :)

Nice to go past Venus and Arantxa :clap2:

If Henin wins Doha Maria's lead will be down to about 30 points though :help:

Justine's not playing IW, so Maria would have a chance to restore the lead there ;)

Didn't know that! Maria should hold on past IW then. Miami could be interesting, Henin is only defending 1st round points.

Maria has to defend the IW title though...so she has very little to gain, there or in Miami

Well if Maria defends IW she would gain 140 (I think) on top of last year plus the 146 that Henin is dropping, but I suppose with the increased points it isn't that much. It's tough to see Maria holding on to the top spot after Miami.

If Maria did lose it after Miami then it would only take a good performance at Charleston and Rome to get it back wouldnt it? Im not sure what JH has to defend aside from RG during clay season though.

She has a SF at Charleston and a final at Berlin.

Congrats Masha :yeah:

And I'm sure if she plays well both in IW and Miami she can maintain the number one position for many more weeks. I'm sure keeping my fingers crossed for her to do so. But still my main focus is on Masha's health, hopefully she recovered.

Now go Masha and get the IW and Miami title :)!

I think everyone forgot that Justine lost in the 2nd round of Miami last season... She could gain heaps of points there and maybe surpass Maria. I'm still confident she will stay on top longer though...

Wow, I was just about to make a ranking thread for Maria. Good thing I saw this.

Can we change the title to Maria's ranking thread or ranking watch or something? I just thought it would be good to have a place to discuss her ranking, the possibilities, her ranking rivals, their possibilities, etc.

Anyway, so glad, Maria is not at the bottom of the heap anymore. That was all I wanted when she got back to number 1 this time around.
And this week, she surpasses Arantxa. So everything is icing on the cake as far as I'm concerned. But I do believe she has a great shot at adding more weeks if not after Miami, then during the clay season and after.

Anyway, I saw they have also added this coming week, so she's already #14 weeks at #1 :yeah:

Assuming that she plays everywhere she is scheduled to play, and that Henin defends her points or picks some up, I would guess that Maria will lose the #1 ranking to Henin sometime in early-mid April and then pick it up again at some point during or after the clay court season. She has an excellent chance to pick up significant points at Charleston, Rome and the French, while Henin will have to be about perfect through that stretch to keep from losing a significant amount of points. And from what I've seen of Henin since her comeback, she is definitely vulnerable. To her credit, she has refused to go down the last 2 weeks, but she's been on the ropes (down a set, extended to 3) alot more than I'm sure she's comfortable with.

But above all, I doubt the #1 ranking means a whole lot to Maria. She doesn't seem at all phased, one way or the other, by anything but winning titles.

I think Maria will probably lose it after IW, and maybe get it back in the clay season, but I doubt that since it's Henin's best surface, not only that but by simply defending her points Henin will gain points because of the new ranking system.

Slampova
Mar 5th, 2007, 10:59 PM
If Maria wins Indian Wells though her ranking will also inflate a bit, whereas Henin will lose quite a few points as she's skipping a Major Tier I event where she made a SF appearance last year...

Maria has 96 points to defend over the whole clay season while Henin has over 1000. Even a mediocre return from Maria should see her compete pretty strongly for the #1 spot.

I think Masha will lose her number 1 ranking after Miami, because she has a final to defend, while Justine can only gain points there. So the points Justine is losing at IW she will gain in Miami and perhaps even more.
If Masha loses her number 1 ranking after Miami I think she'll gets it back in the clay season. Justine has just too much points to defend while Masha can gain a lot of points. And I believe Masha is really determined this year to make a succes of this years clay season.

I think she's determined not to let her country down in the Fed Cup. It's on clay, I think? That would seem like the big motivator for her to play Charleston. However, the more practice she gets on clay, the better the results will be at the French Open, so hopefully she can have some success there.

That could also be correct, but I think the main reason she entered the Fed Cup is because she wants to have a go at the Olympics.
I really do hope she will have great success at this years French Open.

Gold for the Golden Girl, though, I hope.

On the rankings: Justine is obviously desperate to get the No 1 back again. But Masha has a good chance if all goes well to take it back herself if she loses it over Miami
