RUSSIAN pin-up Maria Kirilenko says she will soon create headlines for her tennis as well as her looks. The 20-year-old has already made waves in the world of fashion as the face of the Adidas by Stella McCartney range, and will now receive even more attention next week with her good friend Maria Sharapova (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maria_Sharapova) absent.
Next week’s Dubai Tennis Championships will be her third appearance in the city, and she is aiming high. “The tournament here is good and I like it a lot,” said Kirilenko, who made an appearance at the Dubai Country Club yesterday. “I am happy to be back and looking forward to it,” she said. And the world No.32 comes to Dubai in confident mood having beaten Israeli Shahar Peer - 15 places above her in the world rankings - at the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo last month.
“You never know what is going to happen, I all know is that I am going out to play my best game,” she said. “By the end of the year I want to win a couple of tournaments and be in the top ten. I am in good form and think I have a good chance of making it.” But pressed on who she thinks might prevail in Dubai next week the Russian was more circumspect.
“There are no easy opponents these days, everyone you face is tough but obviously the top ten are always going to be hard to beat.” Kirilenko is good friends with Sharapova, and together they form part of a band of Russians setting about dominating women’s tennis. There are currently ten Russians in the top 50, something which makes their Federation Cup chances pretty strong. “With ten Russians in the top fifty it is very good for the country and our chances in the Federation Cup,” said Kirilenko.
“Tennis became very popular with Russian girls about ten years ago with Anna Kournikova. Lots of girls took up the sport and with good practice we can see the results.”

I appreciate the things ahe said about Kournikova. It ıs definetely true that Kournıkova opened a door to the Russıan gırls what they can do ıf they want. On the other hand I dont agree her ıdeas about her form. Im not convınced that she ıs ın good shape. Wınıng a match agaınst Peer does not show anythıng. I really wısh ıt does but Marıa is not ın good shape thıs year and many loses are waıtıng for her. I wısh her thoughts come true because ı really want her to win as MARIA ıs one of theexceptıonal tennıs players on the court not only just her play but also wth her attıtude on court and off court(ı really wonder how she ıs a closed frıend of Sharapova)
I hope she wıns the tounaments and becomes number one one day

She certainly sounds confident, but she has to be confident on court. She has had no luck in the draws at all, but even so, she lost matches when she was in control. I hope she avoids the big guns, until the QF's :)

Maria Kirilenko presents adidas by Stella McCartney ss07 tennis collection

Press Release Content

Newcomer Maria Kirilenko continues to be the exclusive face of the adidas by Stella McCartney tennis range for 2007. Unveiling pieces of the collection at the Dubai Country Club on Thursday, February 15, the young Russian tennis player teams up with adidas for a second year, and will sport highlight tennis apparel and footwear at all main tournaments, including the upcoming Dubai Tennis Championships 2007.

Having sported pieces of the range for the first time at last year’s Dubai Tennis Championships, Maria will this season wear the lightweight tennis shoe Yashila that is built on a Feather sole unit and comes with an asymmetrical lacing system. Apparel key styles include the tennis vest and the new graceful tennis dress showcasing higher waisted proportions. Going down a much more elegant direction with refined collar executions and pleating details, strong influences also come from men’s tailoring without compromising on femininity and the sport performance angle.

“For me the new adidas by Stella McCartney tennis range represents what women’s tennis should be all about: true performance and elegance. I love the design, colours and the functionality of the products. All the apparel is breathable and comfortable to play in and the Yashila provides me with the cushioning, support and comfort I need on court. I just love the new range and can’t wait for the new season to start,” says Maria Kirilenko.

Colours of the highlighted tennis outfits are picking up on the spring/summer 07 colour palette that redefines once more traditional sports colours through the introduction of the muted delicate seed pearl and white alongside green tones that reflect the general retro inspiration of the range.

“We are thrilled to introduce our newest adidas by Stella McCartney venture to the Middle East,” said Eduard Massier, Business Development and Marketing Director, adidas Emerging Markets. “Following two highly successful years in the region, the new line promises to be another hit, catering exclusively to those who seek performance fused with style.”

The spring/summer 07 collection will be available from the end of February at select adidas retail outlets across the Middle East.

I think Kirilenko has more natural talent than Chakvedatze does. But Maria has never learned how to win matches on a consistent basis on the WTA Tour the way Anna has. And Anna is a smarter and tougher player than Masha is as well.

I agree 100%.

It looked as if Maria was going to start winning matches consistently from the fall of 2005 to the early spring of 2006, but then, well, we all know what happened. :o

Maria can do so many things on the court, that I think it confuses her. :o

Hopefully Dubai is a good tournament for Maria. :)

Anna Chakvetadze definitely has found the winning formula in her game in order to succeed in closing out matches.:yeah: Something that Makiri at times still has trouble in solving with her own game. Maybe someone could help her rediscover that winning formula again-let's say a coach???;) Good luck in Dubai Makiri!:)

Kirilenko, one of the more promising players coming out of Russia in recent years, cruised past debutant and one of three wild cards Monica Niculescu 6-3, 6-0.
"This is just the kind of win I needed to get a bit of confidence back," Kirilenko said after the match.
"I am happy that I have been able to get past the first round as this helps the confidence level to get better," she added.
The 20-year-old Moscow native has a fine run so far on the WTA Tour. Kirilenko made it to the third round of the Australian Open, equalling her best efforts in Grand Slam, where she lost to third seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova.
Pleasing display
"I think I can be pretty pleased with the way I played today. I did the right things and though I found some of her shots a bit strange, I think I got everything going my way," Kirilenko added.
Things were evenly balanced at the start. But once Kirilenko has sized up her opponent, she just ran through the first set 6-3 and then breezed through the second to win it comfortably 6-0.
"I know I have a lot of hard work to do this year, and I need to play more tournaments and get more matches under my belt and get my ranking up," she added.
Kirilenko will now run into the winner of today's match between fellow countrywoman Elena Vesnina and Slovakian Daniela Huntuchova.

I am huge fan of both Daniela and Maria but Daniela has far more talent than Maria, she was Top5 and won real big tournaments also going far in Slams Daniela is for sure Top10 material sh has game to be in Top10 and she has proved it. Daniela is superior to Maria in almost every shot when both play their best.

And the only reason Maria make it so close was bad form of Daniela = tons of UE

Tournament. ;P She only won one tournament so far. And we haven't really seen Maria at her best yet. It was bad luck on Maria's part. Maria was outplaying her a few times in the match and Daniela was lucky to get that break in the second set.

Yeah one tournament but very big, and she was Top5 player , she serves much better and her shots from baseline are better. Daniela at Maria age was force to be reckoned with but I think we must wait until Maria will improve more because right now in terms of style of play and achievements Daniela is now superior to Makiri
