View Full Version : Guys or girls?

What is the majority of Maria's fans? guys or girls? For some reason I think guys, because girls are mainly just jealous of her and get pissed off at her.. (Obviously i'm not one of those and I'm a girl...)

When I was in Madrid, most of her fans were males and I was wondering about it...

Anyway, if there are any girls here, speak up! I would like to talk to you girls out there...

and BTW happy Vallentines day!! :hearts:

Another girl here. :wavey:

Welcome to the board btw.

Yeah, I would think a majority of her casual fans are guys for obvious reasons. But when talking about serious tennis fans...hmmm...I would think the gap between guys and girls wouldn't be as big. It would be interesting to know though.

Any of you going to any tournament M is gonna participate in?

BTW, bellascarlett, I must admit that I admire M's qualities as a player but I also think she's GORGEOUS. Does it mean I'm shallow?

Yeah, I would think a majority of her casual fans are guys for obvious reasons.

Hey--I take a little offense at that. ;)

Sure, she is a pretty young woman, with a dynamite fashion sense, HOWEVER, there is way WAY more there than meets the eye. Carling Bassett was pretty, but my interest in her lasted about 5 minutes.

Maria is one of the brightest, most thoughtful, well-spoken, generous, charming young sportswomen EVER put in the mainstream of international media. The potential is there for her to be a tremendous role model for girls everywhere. Just look at what she did at the UN yesterday.

She is a well put-together woman for any age, but at 19, it's astonishing.

All this is totally separate and apart from her ability on the tennis court, where her performance speaks for itself.

Should I be offended?

:p

Maybe I should have petitioned to be the official "Fasionist" of the Maria Mafia instead of the "Fashionista"?

I've kind of wondered who's female and who's male here, too. We "talk" to each other enough, and watch each other's backs over in GM--we should know each other's names. I know there is a really long thread for "intros", but I wonder if maybe we should have one where everyone just posts their real first name.

And actually I think it's pretty darned cool that Maria has so many female fans. It confirms what I originally thought--that Masha is a great role model for girls and young women. And that there is far more substance to her than just her looks.

Oh cmon, I said Casual fans...meaning I wasnt talking about anyone on this forum...well I guess the majority and certainly not you. ;)

And you dont need to sell Maria on here...we all know what is great about her. :) And even though I'm a woman, my initial impression of her was 'oh this girl is gorgeous but can really play'. You can never separate her appearance from her game and that is what attracted me to her as a fan - that is who she is - style and substance as I like to say.

And I've always been one to recognize style and substance or beauty and substance in my fellow women because that is what I've always wanted to achieve for myself. :)

I refer to my post above. But to answer this briefly, there is nothing shallow about it. I find her gorgeous too. Nothing wrong with it. It's just all part of the package and her appeal not just to guys but basing it on the responses in this thread alone, girls as well.

Love that I'm seeing more girls in Maria's fan base here btw! :rocker2:

It's true 'I Heart Masha" (Brent I think?) that we are seeing an increase in young girls who look up to Maria. Well, Maria is the pretty much the face of tennis right now so obviously it is her who the current young girls are mostly able to see and hopefully admire. If you ask the little girls who are starting to play tennis, bet you most of them would say that Sharapova is their favorite player. But Maria is a good role model as you said so I just hope she continues to be one for the younger generation.

I actually feel quite old in this forum. A lot of younger people have come up lately.

I was kidding. Of course there are guys who will only watch women's tennis because of Maria. And some only because of Serena. And previously some only because of Anna.

But if that's the extent of their interest in the sport, I don't consider them tennis fans. I doubt any of them could tell you who Andrea Jaeger was, or how many Wimbledons Martina Navratilova won.

And if Maria (or Serena or Anna) generate long-term fans who were initially attracted to the game by their looks, that's OK too.

I like the "babes", and certainly have my favorites, not all of whom are as accomplished as their modeling portfolios, but have also been watching tennis long enough to have at least a little knowledge of the game and its history, so I'd like to think that my interest in women's tennis isn't as superficial as my gender might otherwise indicate. The first players I remember having serious admiration for were John McEnroe and Chris Evert Lloyd, ca. late 1970's, when I got my first racket, a Jack Kramer signature edition Wilson....

By the way, I am reading Bud Collins' Total Tennis presently. I highly recommend this book (or the more condensed version, Bud Collins' Encyclopedia of Tennis) for anyone who is a tennis fan. Bud is an excellent writer and makes the history of the game easy to understand and fun to learn. It's packed with stats, year-by-year accounts of the important tournaments and off-court happenings that shaped tennis, and profiles of hundreds of important players of the game.

Yeah, that's right. Borg was Donnay and Fila all the way, wasn't he? I think I even ordered a Fila shirt through a Tennis Magazine ad. I thought, you know, dressing the part would net me at least one or two Wimbledons...

As a male fan of Maria, I was surprised just how many of the people who turned out to cheer Masha in Moscow were girls. It seemed she had about a 90% female following in the stadium.

Or is it just that Russian males are nervous of going to a Woman's sporting event?

OK, just to make it clear, then, I am no longer the 'official Fashionista' (which I thought was pretty clever, given Masha's interest in fashion and the 'Maria Mafia'....) but rather the Fashionist. I dropped the 'a'. I'm no longer an "ova", so no one has the excuse of mistaking me for a girl....
