Yamada-Miyachi Takes New Attitude to England
by Dylan Krasube

http://www.**********************/tu/I2120653.jpg
Maikano Yamada-Miyachi during practice today

Maikano Yamada-Miyachi has kept a low profile on the FWTT Tour on her rookie season. The youngster that resides in Chiba, Japan, has kept away from the controversy, and although she hopes to continue her lower profile, she does say she wants to become more active in the tour. I sat down with the Japanese tennis player for a short interview after her practice session.

Dylan Krasube: How do you feel your season has been going?
Maikano Yamada-Miyachi: I think I've been doing alright. It of course could have gone better, and I'm still getting used to being away from home, but I think being around the top 30 is good. I can only move up, so I hope to continue with it.

DK:You are usually randomly paired in doubles events. You aren't even competing here in doubles. Why is that?
MY-M: I haven't been that vocal on the tour. I have very much kept to myself. I am very much a shy person, and that kind of clashes with a lot of the other ladies. I'll admit I haven't made a concious effort to really build relationships on the tour.

DK: What one thing about your game do you think you should work on?
MY-M: I think it would have to be my mental game. I can go through weeks and not even have any focus at all. I almost feel in a daze. I let the pressure less feeling I have get to me. I need to sustain a strong focus on the court, and I am making steps to do that.

DK:What are your hopes for Wimbledon.
MY-M:I just want to play my best, Jane Wong in the first round is very difficult. I think it'll be silly for me to look beyond that, because I know I am going to need to okay my best, no matter how well Jane Wong is playing or not.

DK: Good luck this week.
MY-M: Thank you.

Pre Wimbledon press conference with Jennifer Selles!!\

Q: Hello Jennifer!
JS: (silence)

Q: How do you feel about your chances here at wimbledon?
JS: A lot of good looking women, so i feel pretty good about my chances. I'll find someone to score with.

Q: You haven't won a match since last October, do you think about that?
JS: what do you think? Of course i do! What you think I just dont remember or something? I don't have any tumors, I am a smart chick!

Q: You play agains Kournikova-Elia in the first round. What do you know about her?
JS: She has really big boobs. Nice ass too!

Q: Is your problem more mental or physical?
JS: Mental. I am always thinking of ways to hurt people like you, I cant focus as much on my tennis.

Q: How many hours per day to you practice?
JS: I am sorry, I do not understand the question......

Q: How long do you spend each day on the court playing tennis?
JS: Oh i see what you mean. I spend as long as it takes until i see a hot chick and go seduce her.

Q: You are playing with Carlos Valderrama in Mixed? Is he good? do you get along?
JS: Yes, he is better than me... that's not hard. I dont understand the second part of the question

Q: i mean do you and carlos get along?
JS: I dont understand!

Q: Where did you go to school?
JS: which one, high school u mean? I went to an all girls school in Ohio.

Q: All girls?
JS: Yes, lots of babes there!

Q: You're trainer Daniel Ospina has put you on a meal schedule and diet program. How is that?
JS: I eat 3 small set meals per day and I get a treat of my choice. He makes me eat salad and rice and organic stuff. its gross.

Q: What do you eat as your snack?
JS: Pussy

Q: Good luck Jennifer!
JS: Thanks!

MONICA GAMBILL READY FOR WIMBLEDON

Q.How have you prepared for wimbledon?

Monica-Well after loosing in eastboourne i stayed there for a few days to practice then i came here to practice since saturday with my sister,Sophia Sabatini and Rosie Ribbons

Q.Are you looking forward to playing here again?

Monica-Defo last year i lost 6-1 7-6 to Larisa Liashnko but i got a lot of home support it was a shame i lost but it was a great experience and i'm glad to be back.

Q.Your playing a qualifyer in round 1 like in roland Garros. Are you a bit nervous?

Monica-Quite last time i lost so i want revenge and i don't want a third straight loss in a grandslam so i'll fight hard and hope i can win.

Q.We are hearing rumors that your sister Anne may withdraw are these true?

Monica-Well she has been ill over the past week shes been having really bad headaches since the french open, she thinks its exhaustion so after wimbledon shes decided to take a break from tennis for about a month. At the moment she isn't withdrawing but we will have to wait and see how she feels

Q.What are your plans after wimbledon?

Monica-Well after i loose in my last event i'm going to have a holiday for at least a week then FED cup before 4 hardcourt tournaments for the US open.

Tiffani Eggert is having her best year in her career so far. Taking her second title of the year and first on grass last week at Eastbourne was a real shock. Whats more, the winner of Eastbourne in the past two years has gone on to win Wimbledon. That may be a tall order, since Eggert's best finish at The Championships is the third round. To make matters even more difficult, Eggert and her fiance and coach, Robert Appelmans are taking care of all last minute details for their wedding on July 14.

"Right now I am looking to play some good tennis at Wimbledon, I am very happy with my game right now. I have a lot on my mind, but hopefully that won't get in the way."

Eggert's schedule is very busy, after Wimbledon is completed, she will switch back to the clay and play in Brussels. On the Sunday of that tournament, Eggert plans to wed. Players on the guest list include: Larisa Ferrer, Ruflina Taliamonosoko, Jane Wong, Brenda Van Haak, Marteena Huubere, Sabine Graf, Sandy Vicario, Paula Masterton, and several others. Also former pro, Tami Sugarn is expected to attend.

Eggert takes on Frenchwomen Francois L'ane in the first round.

Taliamanosoko ready for Wimbledon

Coming off a defending final at the French Open, FWTT #2 ranked player, Ruflina Taliamanosoko, is ready to do the same at Wimbledon.

Last year, two sweltering quarterfinals that went into triple overtime send Sabine Graf against Taliamanosoko for the final. Graf, the more experienced of grass, took the match and her first grand slam. Ruflina later went on to win the US Open, but she says Wimbledon is where her heart is.

This is the most special tournament to me. I hold it in such high regard as the biggest and most important tournament of the entire year. Last year I made the final and won mixed doubles. That put me on cloud nine for the rest of the year and I continued to do well, so I essentially build my year around this event.

http://www.cnnsi.com/tennis/2000/wimbledon/news/2000/07/08/women_final_ap/t1_venus_ap-01.jpg
Taliamanosoko hits a forehand to Sabine Graf in last years final

Taliamanosoko is paired in the doubles competiton with Jane Wong and mixed doubles with husband and coach Ikumbo Kimjumba.

We live and train together during most of the year, so our relationships on the court translate into success, sometimes. Jane and I had it hard earlier in the year, but we were able to win Amelia Island and the French Open. So, it's all good.

Ruflina and Jane had played non-stop from Sydeny in January until the French Open doubles final in Paris. The past 2 weeks, they finally had a week off.

The first week, I went back to San Diego and did nothing. Ikumbo and the 2 kids lived as a family, it was nice. It was like a vacation, but we were at home. Then, the next week, I met up with Jane and we started practicing on some grass courts she has at her house, but they were light. We arrived in England on Saturday night and have been adjusting to the time and grass here at Wimbledon. We both love it.

Liashenko focused and confident about Wimbledon

Reutuers

I sat down with Larissa Liashenko, a winner of 3 titles this year, during a practice session.

Question: Larissa, would you say that your game is back?

Liashenko: It's getting there but I don't think I'm playing as well as I was in Australia but it's definetly better then during the clay court season for sure.

Question: Do you think you can do some damage here?

Liashenko: Of course I can! I've won a grass tournament two weeks ago so I'm a player to watch in my opinion. Last week in Eastbourne, I had a let down but the girl played well.

Question: Will you be playing doubles and mixed doubles here?

Liashenko: Yes, doubles with Anna Kroulikova and mixed with Nicolay Davydenko.

Question: Thanks. I'll let you go back to the practice court.

Liashenko: Thank you.

MADONIKA LOVES EVERYBODY

Madonika Diva Jahfson is a new person. After being sent to emotional rehab by the FWTT tour she has comeback a compasionate and loving person. She loves everyone on the tour, but most of all her best friend Conde-Martinez.

"We are such good friends now. She called me up and gave me the name of her therapist in London, and the name of her mental health doctor who gives perscribes her with 13 doses of Prozak a day. She is such a good friend, we go to the same insane asylym now and you have to trust a woman who has 7 years of experience in the mental health field. She has been to many insane asylyms."

http://www.madonnashots.com/nick02.jpg

Above is a picture of Madonika, on the right, after her release from emotional rehab. Conde-Martinez, who is on the left, has warned Madonika of the side effects of the drugs they gave her for her temper tantrums.

"She told me to becareful in what I take because she said she has gained a little weight due to all those pills. I still think she looks beautiful, so what if she weighs 369 pounds. She is a beautiful woman from Spain, she just happens to have issues with her mental health like myself. We are like sisters now. We practically use the same I.V. bag."

Jahfson also says that Conde-Martinez has given her advice on how to lower her therapy costs.

"Oh she is such a dear friend. She told me that all you have to do is suck some cock and your price lower dramatically. She should know, she's been in theraphy sucking cock for ages now. What a nice woman she is."

Jahfson also talked about her future with Conde-Martinez.

"Well it's time we came out of the closet. We have been dating for a few days now and are going to be married in Hawaii after Wimbledon. She already bought her ticket since she plans to lose in the first round. We are also adopting children from a Spanish ghetto where she used to live as a child. I am so happy. I love Spain, there are so many homeless people there who are so nice. So many ditry streets...it's inspirational, every time I go there I just want to pick up a broom and sweep all the shit from the streets. What a wonderful country."

Thanks Alx for answering MOnica Rules...

Monica - if u didn't understand, some of the challengers don't count in the amount of tournaments you are allowed to count towards ur ranking. But you have played those extra tournaments, so I included them, so we could see who is in better form sort of thing.

THat doesn't make much sense i realise, but i can't be bothered ;) LOL

Regla Torres not ready for grass

Wimbledon

Regla Torres the #6 seed who had a great clay season, only second to the French Open champion Ferrer, admitted today she is not ready for Wimbledon. Grass is her worst surface. The Spanish #1 has not played a match since losing to Ferrer in the infamous Roland Garros semis 12-10 in the final set. Torres arrived late only today to London and even said she hasn't picked up a tennis racquet since that loss.

She has a heavy schedule however here at Wimbledon as the #6 seed in singles and partnering Gianna Adrianna Dulko in doubles and partnering her new boyfriend Fernando Morientes in the mixed doubles. She said "been with Fernando for the last couple of weeks made me take my mind off tennis, I'm not expecting much here on the grass, I'm just going to out and have fun".

Gisele Noventz advances at Wimbledon

LONDON - 16th seed, Gisele Noventz struggled to overcome Venezuela's qualifier Carolina Spencer on the first round of the third major of the year. Noventz, who got her first title this year at a Wimbledon warm up, s'Hertogenosch, on Netherlands defeated Spencer, former junior number 2, 4-6 6-4 6-4.

"I had few problems on my serve, but I could comeback in the next sets. Carolina played great" said the Brazilian. "I need somethings to pratice it for the next round, cause only gets tougher and tougher."

MONICA GAMBILL SURVIVES MARATHON MATCH!

Monica Gambill survived a marathon 2 hour match today at wimbledon to win only her second match at a grandslam in her career. It was a great match with young Marta Maria pushing Gambill all through the match and nerves got the better of her when she served for the match at 6-5 but hit 2 double faults.
'It was a such a great match.I knew she was a good player from her junior and senior results.I didn't expect such a fight from her.She played great but got nervous at the end and i was able to win'

Anne Gambill managed to win also in three sets 6-4 3-6 6-3

Karla Herrera beats Dulko in straight sets the only upset registered in round one of wimbledon.
Dulko of Poland who was the 15th seeded started well taking a 5-2 lead, but Karla managed to save 5 set points and the set ended on her hand in a pretty good tiebreak for her 7-3. I the second again Dulko built a 3-1 lead, only to see Karla comeback again, Karla gets this important win 7-6(3) 6-4.

Gianna Adrianna Dulko is very disappointed with her straight sets loss to Karla Herrera. Despite facing such a feisty opponent in the first round, Dulko was disappointed with her loss as she squandered crucial leads in both sets. She has yet to play in doubles. Grass is her worst surface, but still, this result is surprising. DUlko needs to rebound from this loss, as her outstading and top 8 clay court season has vaulted her into 11th place in the Race to the Chase. She is desperate and eager to qualify, as it would be a stepping stone and remarkable achievement in her already ilustrious and growing career. :)

Katarina krivencheva-Molik continued her doubles slump, as she and partner Natalya Dhlopocova fell in the first round in three sets to the team of Hingis/Noventz.

Pierce Ousted Jahfson!

Wimbledon, England (Reuter) - The Juniors US Open champion, Catherine Pierce of Australia advance to the second round with won over the Juniors US Open finalist, Madonika Diva Jahfson of Morocco in one hour and 47 minutes with 7-5 4-6 9-7. "I am so happy that it is my first win a match at maindraw in Professional Tour in my career!", Pierce said.

Diva Jahfson seem embrassed when she walking out of the Court 2. "I am really embrassing! Look... Catherine is a junior player! Gosh, I can't believe that I lost the match" Diva Jahfson told with a bad stress, "I remember I played her last time was the Juniors US Open Final where she beat me there and she is a very good player now".

Additional, Pierce's sister, Bryanne Applegate also won her match against British, Samantha Moore in straight sets, 7-6 [3] 6-2. "I am so glad that I won the match today. I knew Samantha is a tough player and the crowd make her more advantage because she's a British player", Applegate told a press from England, "I heard that my sister, Catherine won her match today so, that means we have to playing against each other in next match!"

Too bad for Katarina, a tough loss to Anabel Conde-Martinez. Katarina is very disappointed as she has played inconsistently and quite poorly as of late in both juniors and pros. Losing in the first round here in singles and doubles will not help her ranking nor boost her confidence.

Congrats to Dulko/Torres on winning their 1R doubles match! :) :o Applegate/Zubir are a tough team!

INTERVIEW WITH LARISA FERRER

QUESTION: How are you feeling for this tournament Larisa?
LARISA FERRER: I am feeling well for this tournament, I had some practice last week so I think I can do a fine tournament.

QUESTION: Do you expect to win here?
LARISA FERRER: I really don't.

QUESTION: Why?
LARISA FERRER: Last week I lost to Tiffani, so I can also lost to her here. I think there are players with more chances to win that is not me.

QUESTION: Who are your favorites?
LARISA FERRER: I think the big favorite is Tiffani because she won Eastbourne. I also think that Sabine and Selima can do really good here. And probably Marteena and Anjelica will do their best for getting the title.

QUESTION: What are your plans in the future? What are you playing after Wimbledon?
LARISA FERRER: I am looking forward to the American hardcourt season. My main goal is the US Open, I was finalist in the last two years without doing really well in the beggining of the year with the exception of the Australian Open so I am playing the 5 Hardcourt tournaments to see if I can get some good practice and I will do my best for winning it.

QUESTION: You are looking for completing the 4 singles grand slam titles right?
LARISA FERRER: Yes

QUESTION: You know that if Selima Valentine wins here this year she would complete them?
LARISA FERRER: Yes, and she made the final in 2000 when I won here so I think she maybe can do it here as I said before. She is a great player and is always a dangerous player

QUESTION: Will you also try to get the complete slams in doubles.
LARISA FERRER: Well of course, I mean I have won two so it will be more difficult. Also it's more difficult with such good pairs like Anjelica/Eva, Sabine/Selima or Ruflina/Jane. I will do my best with Marteena as I have never won here in doubles, so we will see.

Daniela Turundzhov:

[i]I'm really upset with the way I played. I mean it was simply not acceptable, especially at a Grand Slam. I mean she put me under a lot of pressure and my game broke down. I'm pretty down mentally after this loss and hopefully I can get it back together[/img]

Menard overwhelmes Mozzarella

Brazilian Caroline Menard won her first Wimbledon match today on Court 1 after defeating Vatican's Olive Mozzarella 6-4 4-6 6-4

Menard rallied 1-4 in the final set to win five games in a row and close the match 6-4 with an overhead.

"She was hitting winners from nowhere. I was trying to hang in there and in the end she missed more. I'm glad to be in second round"

Jahfson on Wimbledon loss - SO WHAT?

Round 1
Pierce defeats Jahfson 7-5 4-6 9-7

Q: How dissapointed are you? Obviously you made a big hype about coming here.

M: I'm not dissapointed at all, why should I be? I actually thought about not playing this tournament this year. I really made no effort to prepare or anything, so really I'm just here to enjoy myself.

Q: You obviously made some big news with your exhibition, can you tell us about that a little bit.

M: Yea definitely...a lot of players said I would never get an exhibition and I did. Things have been going very well for me. There are players already who have committed, and I mean we are talking months ahead.

Q: Conde-Martinez is one of the players who seems to have refused to support the event...

M: Well that's completely her choice. Her decision does not effect me at all. My event isn't exactly a Tier 5, it has many good players in it...maybe that's what's keeping her from playing.

Q: What are your plans for the summer?

M: I'm playing all the big tournaments. I don't think I have a week off until after Moscow so I know a lot of players will be dreading that. I might take a week off after I win the US Open but I can't talk about that right now.

Q: How does the Fed Cup situation stand as of now?

M: I haven't spoken to Ruflina because there is really nothing to say. I have made my case very clear. Either I get two singles matches or I will not play for Africa again.

Mazuelena has the last match on center vs #1 seed Larisa Ferrer,, we asked Mazuelena how she viewed this matchup.

"You know it will be very difficult,, I have played her a number of times this year, from second rounds to meeting her once in the final of an event, she always manages to beat me, then again she is not the number one in the world for nothing!!!!"

London-Reuters-

The tennis world was schoked on sunday when American star Jane Wong ,seeded 14, was beaten in the second round. Jennifer Selles shocked Jane in 3 tough sets 4-6 7-5 7-5 on court # 2 , which is known as the "graveyard of champions" in which many upsets have occured over the years. Selles had lost 12 straight matches coming into Wimbledon, dating back to last september. She has been fighting injuries and retired from tour for a while. Selles is back but has struggled, losing in the first round in all tournaments she played this year. "I've been having such a lousy time of it since my return. I couldn't do anything right. But now that's past. Today, well what can I say? It was a great match. I played almost as good tennis as I've ever played. Better than when I won Tokyo Pan Pacific 2001 or made the Rome final 2001. I think that all these tournament have one thing in common. I have the desire to win so badly, that I'm just hitting some shots that i may not have otherwise even tried to get to. I'm just "in the zone. " said Selles. "I walked on the court expecting to win, that's what made the difference. I believed I can do it. And I will step on to the court on Tuesday expecting to win, whether it would be against Larisa or not. That's what it takes."

Jane Wong left the court in Tears.

wow - marteena is gonna be a busy girl tomorrow - 3 matches by the looks of it!

Marteena spoke briefly after a practice session "I hope i can do well here, Wimbledon is the one grand slam that most players want to win or do well at. I've played better than I expected at both Birmingham and Eastbourne considering that grass is not my favourite surface, so I hope that I can continue to play well here. I would think that Larisa, Tiffani, or Ruflina (there u go Ruffy) are the favourites for the title, and Angie/Eva must be favourites for the doubles even though they are not the biggest fans of grass."

Good Luck to all players!

Anjelica is really excited to win her first matches in singles and doubles.

"Obviously I struggled closing out the match with Ana-Maria. I was a bit nervous playing here, and wasn't really used to the grass yet. Ana-Maria played very well out there, though. She's a very talented player who doesn't have quite the results that you would think looking at her beautiful game. I know a lot about her from watching her and Zerene play the doubles. I think that was probably the key to my winning the match today. She's a great girl and I wish her the best of luck in the juniors event."

Regla Torres is shocked to have won her first match, as this is the first time she's played in a month and the first time she's played on grass in a year! She would like to congratulate Doryssia and wish her the best for the future.

selima valentine during her match vs. monica de la cal - selima won 7:6 6:3

in doubles the pair graf/valentine, who won eastbourne last week, was upset in the first round by liashenko/kroulikova.

selima after her single match: i am quiet happy with my game today, but i still do not play 100%, now maybe 80.

and about the double match: i have no idea, what happened. sabine and i, we played maybe much better than in eastbourne, but anna and lari were unbeatable today. they did no mistakes, no unforced errors , we did 10 - and that was the difference. but i think it was a good match for the crowd.

ANNE GAMBILL LOOSES TITANIC BATTLE

Anne Gambill lost a titanic battle with Brenda Van Haak at wimbledon today it was a fantastic match which saw the young brit show off her great talent. She took the first set 6-3 with wondeful winners from the baseline but Van Haak stepped her game to take the second 6-4.It looked all over when Anne got broken to be 1-5 down in the third but won the next 4 games without making an errorand pushed Van Haak all the way to 9-7.
'Obviously i'm dissapointed in loosing but i was almost out at 1-5 but i played 4 amazing games but just couldn't hold on after 7-7'
Sister Monica also lost today.Monica Gambill lost 7-5 4-6 7-5 to Gisele Noventz.
'It was a very close match just a few points here and there.I'm very dissapointed in loosing cos i lead our head to head and going out in the second round here is very dissapointing. After the doubles and mixed doubles i'm gonna have to make tough decisions about me playing tennis from now on'
Her win loss record since May is 6-7 and her feelings on tennis are changing all the time
'Sometimes i feel i should work harder to imrpove but then when the results don't come you think whats the point. It took almost 6 months for great results to happen after i worked really hard from July last year.I remember last year when i almost retired after loosing all the time to nobodies that are nowhere these days i had great results in challangers with semis, finals and quarters but i wasn't able to breakthrough in the main events. This year i have but i'm still not in the top 20 and i haven't won a singles title yet.I'll take a holiday after wimbledon and have a think about my career'

Ouch, a tough loss for Dulko in both doubles and mixed doubles. Good luck to the wildcards, this is an impressive showing. Oh well, still a pretty good showing for DUlko/Torres, who defeated the 5th seeds in the first round. Dulko and Torres' worst surface is grass, so this is a surprising showing. But still, disappointing , as a great opportunity to get into the doubles semi-final was wasted. 8-6 loss in the third in mixed, ouch!

Go Molik/Roddick!

Dulko is in for sure for Mont de marsan.
When does the challenger start, as Krivencheva-Molik would like to play, but she is still alive in mixed! :o She might have to withdraw if necessary, but please tell me what the situation is. Can she play? Is she eligible?

Eggert Blasts Wimbledon Committee

Tiffani Eggert, one of the main favorites entering the tournament this year, blames poor scheduling on her losses. Two weeks in the calendar are saved to play the Championships. That is so the players can be given sufficient rest, after a week of wasting good weather and playing very few matches. Tiffani was ready to play for days, and then she gets scheduled to play 3 matches in one day. Her first two matches went into tennis' equivalence of over time. The only reason she claims to have won her third match of the day was because Monica gambill her opponent was equally tired. Tiffani has filed a complaint with the committee to improve scheduling. "I was really expecting a good tournament this year and its a shame they don't know how to run things," Tiffani said in her post match interview.
