de la Courtiere praises court placement

"I think it's nice, you know. My first match was on centre court and my second one will be also. It's nice that the Wimbledon committee will put me on centre court even though I'm obviously not a favorite to win here, and don't play that well on grass. It's gone a long way to improve my opinion of this tournament. I'm looking forward to playing my three matches tomorrow in singles, doubles, and mixed."

Taliamanosoko wins in singles and doubles

Ruflina Taliamanosoko-Kimjumba of Botswana won her 2nd round singles match over Candela Sanchez-Connelly in three tight sets. She and partner Jane Wong advanced to the quarterfinals of the doubles with a 3 set win as well.

Taliamanosoko will now face Caroline Menard of Brazil in the 3rd round.

It was so nice to be back here. I love this tournament. I'm looking forward to the rest of my matches.

In response to what other players have called "poor scheduling," Ruflina had to say this:

Yes, it was tough, but sometimes, you just gotta do what you gotta do. I played 3 matches in a day at the French, but you have to be prepared for whatever comes up. I think both sides should compromise.

Ok thanks ,alx, yes Krivencheva-Molik is in Wimbledon juniors, im so stupid  ;)

Anyway, I just wanted to post a fact that I realized when glancing at my player's stats. With her 1R loss to Anabel Conde-Martinez at this weeks Wimbledon, Katarina Krivencheva-Molik is 0-3 vs. Anabel Conde-Martinez, meaning Anabel accounts for 25% or 1/4 of Katarina's 12 losses this year! Congrats Anabel! Katarina has met (and lost to) Anabel 3 times in the last 6 tournaments she has played! :o SO AGAIN, CONGRATS ANABEL! YOU SURE HAVE KATARINA's NUMBER! BUT, SHE WILL BEAT U SOME DAY! ;) All three of those matches were 3-setters! So it was close!!!! ;) :)

Marteena Huubere, of Australia, serves during her match against Spain's Anabel Conde-Martinez, during their 2nd Round match. Huubere won the match 7-5 6-2

[5]Miss Marteena HUUBERE (AUS) d. Miss Anabel Conde-Martinez 7-5 6-2
[2]Miss Ferrer/Miss Huubere d. Miss Turundzhov/Miss Huubere 6-1 1-6 8-6

Questions for Miss Marteena Huubere:

Q: Two matches today, you must be fairly tired right now?
A: I was straight after the doubles, but it's been an hour since then and I'm feeling great now. I think having the last week off practically has really helped. Winning the two matches also helps I suppose! :)

Q: Was your singles match today a good opener for you? Do you think the struggle in the first set would have helped?
A: Well, I definitely think it was a tough first match here, and to play on centre court was fantastic! I mean, Anabel is in the top 20 i think, so she is a tough opponent. She played very well today, I had a few chances to break her in the first set early on, but she played too good on those points.

Q: You must have been confident coming into the match, because you have a good record against anabel.
A: Yeah, I've played her a few times and done well against her, but, you know, she is a top 20 player, has played great this year, won a couple of titles i think, so you never know, anything can happen. And i haven't played her on grass before, so that was new.

Q: Do you think the grass would have given you the advantage?
A: Well, I'm not sure. I don't think grass is her favourite surface, so in that regard it probably helped me a little. But then again, grass is my least favourite surface, so I don't know what to think.

Q: You just said that grass is your least favourite surface, but you have done well the past two weeks on grass.
A: Yeah, to be honest, I've been a little suprised by my grass results. Finals at Birmingham and Semi's at Eastbourne losing to Larissa and Tiffani. That gave me a lot of confidence to make me realise I can play well on the grass, so I think playing those two weeks helped a lot.

Q: Did you consider not playing those events at all, because earlier you pulled out of Strasbourg citing exhaustion. You must have wanted a break.
A: Yeah, i was very tired during the clay season, but I realised that grass wasn't my favourite so I needed as many matches on the surface as I could get. Also, I lost a little earlier in Roland Garros than I had hoped to, so I had almost a week break there, except for some doubles matches.

Q: Speaking of doubles, you and larisa had a tough first match out there today, against your sister and her good friend.
A: Yes, it was very tough. I've played and practiced with Mirjana and Daniela a lot of times, and they are both very good doubles players. I think they had nothing to lose, and were happy to go out there swinging.

Q: What are yours and Larisa's expectations here in the doubles?
A: Well, ofcourse we would like to do well here, Wimbledon is the slam i think most people want to do well at. We would really like to win a slam in doubles this year, and Wimbledon is probably our best chance left. But there are a lot of good doubles teams out there, you can see that from today's match. So, we never look too far ahead.

Q: You had some good support out there from Sabine, who won her match earlier today. She is a good friend of yours?
A: Yeah, Sabine is a great friend, a great girl. We've practiced a lot together, and she's a great grass player, so it has helped me a lot. I was very grateful to her, and to see her out there was great - it really inspired me. Sabine is a great girl and i wish her the best of luck here, indefending her title.

Q: Anna Kroulikova next, what do you expect from this match?
A: Well, to be honest, I am more optimistic about this match, then I would have been if I was playing Tiffani, who beat me last week at Eastbourne. Anna is a tough opponent, she's good on grass. It's been a while since I played her. I've only played her once at Basel last year in the quarters, and that was a tough match, 7-5 in the third i think. So, I am expecting a tough match.

Q: Thanks Marteena, and good luck!
A: Thankyou very much! :)

Jennifer Selles comments on Tiffani Eggert

"I feel bad that tiffani lost. However, I think the way she handled herself was a little bit out of her personality. She shouldn't have blamed the 3 matches in one day. Many players had to go through that. It's luicrous to say that her singles loss was based on that because thats the first one she played. Also she had a straight set match yesterday. Tiffani can get weird when she is angry, but she's a great person. I am sad that she lost, but she needs to learn how to lose. I was that way for a while too, but now I am just used to losing every match(laughs)."

"I'm also excited for the match against Larisa tomorrow. It's on the Graveyard court, so maybe the luck will be on my side. I'm looking forward to hitting some deep serves. I have to attack her backhand on my returns. She can get her feet crossed up on the bachand side if its a hard shot. I won't reveal my whole strategy because I want to keep it secret. I'll show it to her during the Match(winks)."

Interview with Larisa Ferrer after her win over Mazuelena Majlana in Wimbledon

QUESTION: A tough match today.
LARISA FERRER: Yes, really difficult match as always against Mazuelena. The first set could have gone on her way and we will never know what would have happened if she had won that set.

QUESTION: You will face Jennifer Selles next, what do you think about her?
LARISA FERRER: I think it will be really tough. I didn't expect to face Jennifer really. I thought I would face Jane but I think Jennifer surprised us.

QUESTION: You also played doubles today and won 8-6 in third set.
LARISA FERRER: Yes another difficult match. But I have a great partner that was able to hold her serve when the important moments. But we had also infront of us a tough team you know Daniela has big talent and will soon be there in the top 20 and Mirjana is also a great player.

QUESTION: Ruflina was upset you didn't choosed her as a fave for winning Wimbledon. ;)
LARISA FERRER: Yes I saw hehe, but I think there is no need for saying Ruflina, she is the two in the rankings and she was finalist here. I hope she is not mad to me because she is a great person and player and I really hope she can do well here. Please forgive me Ruflina :)

QUESTION: Tiffani Eggert lost today and blamed the poor scheduling.
LARISA FERRER: Yes tough loss for Tiffani and surprisive. I agree and do not agree with her as we have to admit that the schedule has been crazy as we have practically played only this week and the qualifying was only last week so we don't have enough time for resting so yes the scheduling is bad and not fair to us but still we have to learn to win somehow our matches and not using an excuse. I mean she is great she beat me last week like for 100th consecutive time, she played a great week there, probably she was fatigued for that week, I don't know. Also Anna is a great player and she gave her best in the court.

QUESTION: You are playing with David Haynes in the mix doubles event, and you have been playing with different partners since 1 year ago why is that?
ANSWER: I haven't find a partner that is ok with me, I mean that we feel good together. Since Mike Moore decided to dedicate only in singles he hasn't played with me but I think David and I can do a good tournament here.

QUESTION: We haven't heard about your marriage to diver German Stefan Ahrens, is all ok?
ANSWER: I would prefer not to answer this question.

QUESTION: So now that you see the third round matches who do you think can do a good event?
ANSWER: Difficult question, everybody is tough to beat. Specially Anjelica and Sabine I think can maybe go to next round.

QUESTION: In your draw there are still some seeds there who do you think is tougher?
ANSWER: Everybody is, I think everybody is doing her best effort. I have first my match against Jennifer and I don't know if I will win. Then you see likes of Anjelica, Selima, Gisele and Regla. It's a very open tournament.

QUESTION: In doubles? who do you think will win?
ANSWER: I think the favorites are obvious. Anjelica and Eva are the best by far of all the doubles teams so I think they will win it for sure . I hope of course Marteena and I can do it but will be a really big surprise. Also Ruflina and Jane they usually play better on grand slams.

QUESTION: Thank you for the interview Larisa.
ANSWER: Is a plessure

Ok, Ok. If you people want a 2 week slam we can.
We will try in US Open. I will do qualifyings on New Haven week. I will release draws on the Sunday(start date of New Haven) and ask for the points on Thursday or so.

That way you have time and I do and everybody will be happy.

Karla Herrera/Jose De Armas wins over Dulko/Dromobowski and talks about the Tournament Organization

Karla Herrera, the long and lost sibling of Ana Maria Herrera teamed up with Jose Antonio de Armas of Venezuela and won over their first round oponnents Dulko/Dromobwski. This was her interview.

Karla you had to play Dulko again and you beat her again how does it feels?
Well actually i don`t like to play the same player in a span of such few matches, but its ok i mean that was how the draw was done and Dulko is a great player and person, i mean its just that i prefer to play different players all the time.

Candela and you had such a lost yesterday 8-6 in the third how does it feels?
Well as you said was so close, i mean Candela and I are such great friends, i mean eventhough we lost, we knew we did our best, and hopefully, better times are next to come.

Players have been complaining over the scheduling, and the way the tournament is being run what`s your opinion on that?
Well i think players when they are winning like 2 or three matches on the same day don`t complain at all, but when all of the sudden things don`t go your way (Tifanni :o) and its your fault, its easy to put a finger on other things to get an excuse, but i mean if you are not ready to compete at this level, so better go home, to defend organizers i think they are doing the best that they can, no matter losing or winning i will stay the rest of the way of the event to support it.

The idea of having a two week event for Grand Slams is being studied and maybe put on a test for US OPen , do you think it`s good?
Well i think the idea is good, but the only problem i see on that is that maybe players have to qualify at the same time where New Haven`s Tier II event is being held and particularly as a player i would not like to miss that important event, but its ok to try new things, maybe the results are good and you know would be great,i mean, we are looking to do the best as possible for this tour.

Regla Torres, the number six seeded at this event, tomorrow on the Graveyard court (court 2) what do you think of it?
LOL, i mean i am not supersticios at all, and i mean it will be hopefully a good match for both players, i mean she is the sixth player in the world, and i`m unseeded here, so i have no pressure on me, she is supossed to win, hopefully i could bring my best and see what happens.

Congratulations Karla good luck for tomorrow.

LOL
Tanya and Olive are pleasantly surprised to have won their 1st round mixed doubles matches. This was something they had forgotten about :p There are some mistakes though
Tanya plays with kwelagobe ,and Olive was supposed to play with Adolf Hitler ,and sees that she's suddenly playing with her manager David Sedin(that's me;))??:mad:
How are the organisers changing partnerships without permission?
Nevetheless Olive faces Condi -Affleck and it'll be interesting to see who wins that one ,and I dunno whom Tanya -Kwelagobe face but good luck to whoever they are :D

Tanya Hingis ANGRY at Bryanne:mad::mad:

As much as Tanya Hingis was extremely happy .honored and surprised at beating defending champion Sabine Graf, she was extremely angry at Miss Applegate for losing to Rosie Ribbons
Miss Tanya Hingis hates playing newcomers, and expressed her disappointment on facing Miss Ribbons."She was the player I would look forward least to playing as she has the weapons to beat me",said Hingis. As for her form in the quaterfinals Tanya said she wasnt too optimistic.
"If the situation is what the score suggested ,then I will be extremely tired ,but if the situation is not as the score suggested then I will be energetic and fired ;);)" said Tanya ,in a statement on Tuesday.

sabine is on a point, where she has to decide her tennis life, possible this is a point of no return....maybe this will be her last wimbledon....maybe her last official match : sad:

Ruflina Taliamanosoko hits a backhand winner to Caroline Menard in the 3rd round of Wimbledon. Ruflina won in 3 sets.

For the 3rd year in a row, I am in the quarterfinals of the most prestigious tournament of the year....I love it. I'm also doing well in doubles and mixed doubles, so this is just a great tournament for me. It will be tough to play Marteena, but I know if I play my game, success will come.

GAMBILL/LAPENTTI INTO SEMIS

Monica Gambill and Nicoletta Lapentti are through to the semi finals of wimbledon doubles after knocking out the highly favoured team of Ferrer/Huubere.The match stated with the pair being out played by the older more experienced team but Monica and Nicoletta regrouped and took the second 6-1 as their play improved a lot.The third was tense with no breaks of serve untill the final match of the day where Monica hit a sreaming winning return down the line.
'We played so well after the first set we haven't got off to a good start at all this tournament but that will come with more practice together'

Karla Herrera beats Regla Torres in Wimbledon 2002 :o :o :o

The top Venezuelan-Mexican player, but ranked outside the top 16 in the world Karla Herrera, beat the tournaments 6th seeded player Regla Torres in a 6-3 6-4 just over one hour long encounter. Karla, sister of Ana Maria Herrera, the best junior player at wimbledon 2001, playing on her first wimbledon, reaches this round as the best 8 players in 2002 wimbledon draw. Here is her interview.

Karla, Dulko the 15 seeded, now 6th Seeded Regla Torres, how do you feel?
Well coming into this year`s wimbledon i don`t know i think i have find a zone there things are just clicking for me, i mean today i player better than i expected, i mean i broke her at the start of both sets and never looked back, it was for sure one of my best matches ever for me.

How do you think are you dealing with the pressure of this such big event?
Well i would not like to say that is pressure i mean maybe if i`m seeded in the top ten and expected to win this whole thing would be diferent, but i think i have handle the pressure pretty well i guess i had such a match to survive in my second round and that was pretty important for me, gives you a lot of confidence to win a close one.

Larissa Ferrer the world number one the same question as yesterday what do you expect?
Well nothing different than a 6-0 6-0 win for her :o lol, well talking seriosly i mean i am so happy to be where i am at this tournament, i feel that i like the courts pretty much despite this being my worst surface, but i think a change on my attitude towards this event has helped me a lot. I just hope to keep playing my own game and try not to think that is her on the other side, i mean if i play my game i feel that i can come up with the upset and beat her, but again i`m against a player who`s expected to beat me so no pressure on me.

Tku Karla Good Luck in the doubles tomorrow and in you next singles match ;)

Ferrer beats Selles in tough battle

Interview:

QUESTION: Did you expect a tough match like this?
LARISA FERRER: Oh yes, yesterday I was trying to think on a tactic to beat Jennifer and well I got the win but a very difficult match.

QUESTION: You lost the first set and she almost had a 5-4 lead in the second.
LARISA FERRER: Oh yes I was so scared she was serving 40-30 and then made a double fault, then I made a winner and she made another error so I really got lucky there. If she had made a good serve I don't know what would have happened.

QUESTION: You face now another difficult match, against Karla Herrera.
LARISA FERRER: Yes, we have faced each other many times and I remember I think in Tokyo and Bogota, both really difficult matches. Karla has some very good shots that always bother, I mean for something she made this far.

QUESTION: You and Marteena lost in doubles, dissapointed?
LARISA FERRER: Yes.. was a tough loss as we expected to win, I mean we won the first set 6-0 and then Monica and Nicoletta started to play so great that Marteena and myself didnt know what to do. Finally the third was better but they really played very good tennis out there.

QUESTION: But still alive in mix doubles.
LARISA FERRER: Yes, tough match but David and I played good tennis and we made few errors.

QUESTION: Good luck in your next match Larisa.
LARISA FERRER: Thank you.

Anjelica de la Courtiere to become the #1 doubles player in the world
AP

LONDON (AP) - Following this week's Wimbledon tournament, Canadian tennis star Anjelica de la Courtiere will be atop the doubles rankings for the first time in her career.

de la Courtiere has played her first full year on the tour since returning from knee surgery last July. Upon her return, the then-17 year old partnered with Eva Sorrenta, also of Canada, to win the Stanford doubles title. From then on, things only got better for the talented pair.

Now, a year and 11 titles later, de la Courtiere will be the number one doubles player in the world. She and Eva Sorrenta will flipflop for the top spot, but will remain the #1 and #2 ranked doubles players in the world.

"It's been a wonderful year," said de la Courtiere. "Eva is the best partner I could ever hope for. We do so well week in and week out, and to finally be #1, it's just an amazing accomplishment for me, and I couldn't be more pleased.

"It also now takes a lot of pressure off of me to get to that top spot. Now Eva and I can do what we like most, to contend for tournaments and especially for the majors."

de la Courtiere and Sorrenta have been dominant on hardcourts this year, and look to continue their excellent play with a US Open title.

"Obviously Eva and I are focusing on doing well in the majors. Here at Wimbledon, of course, but mostly at the US Open. We've played so well on hardcourts this year, so obviously the US Open is the one title that we've set our gazes on and figure that we can, and hopefully will, win."

de la Courtiere began her career in great fashion, quickly reaching #1 in the world in singles two years ago. This acheivement makes her one of very few players who have ever held the top spot in both singles and doubles in their career.

This is what Marteena had to say about her QF match:

"This hopefully will be a good match. Ruflina defeated me last time we played, so I hope to play well! A victory would be great, but Ruflina plays great on the grass, and I'm not as comfortable as her. But I'm going to go out there and give it my best and see what happens."

Women's Singles Quarterfinals

Gisele NOVENTZ/Anjelica DE LA COURTIERE 6-4 4-6 12-10

Q: Congratulations Gisele. Your first semifinals in a big major.
GISELE NOVENTZ: Oh thanks! (smiles) I'm really enjoying this tournament. I think I just found my best potential here.

Q: What do you thought after you defeated Selima?
GISELE NOVENTZ: What did I thought?

Q: Yes.
GISELE NOVENTZ: I was so happy. I played my best tennis against her. I was nervous, I admit. But I just got confortable, and everything went well in the end. It was a long and hard match. Selima fought for all points, and I had to change my strategy, well so I did quarters.

Q: What do you think of Selima's comeback?
GISELE NOVENTZ: I'm very happy to see that she's playing well, like she was when that horrible accident happened. She seems to be recovering her old form, match by match, which is pretty exciting. It's so good to see all players healthy and happy with tennis. I think Selima is a great example of that.

Q: Let's talk about today's match. You defeated another higher seed, in another tough match. What do you thought of your performance today?
GISELE NOVENTZ: I played a great first set, and I relaxed a little bit on second. On third, we both reached in an incredible level, she got frustrated sometimes, but she handled well and that didn't bothered her. I'm glad I could win. Anjelica played really well too.

Q: What do you think of the new genaration of FWTT players?
GISELE NOVENTZ: I think it's great. It was always tough. There were always a surprise toward all these years on FWTT. I think now, the players are getting better and better, and for seeds, it's getting harder. I'm glad and satisfied I could prove some people wrong of my game, and other players too. But some players are just too consistent, as Larisa, Marteena, and Selima, and they will always be considered and known like favourites.

Q: Talking on Larisa, you face her for the 4th time. What do you think?
GISELE NOVENTZ: I'm so happy to be on semifinals already. It's just being a dream. I never thought I would be in this place. It's unbelievable. I think have no pressure at all, I will give all of me to try to win. I don't try to push myself in this, I'm just playing my game match by match. Fortunely, it was working, and I hope it works against Larisa (laughs)

Q: You played with Tanya Hingis here, and wasn't that happy like you're being on singles. How's your feeling to this?
GISELE NOVENTZ: I tried to play a great tournament with Tanya. We've been into personal problems, which I won't comment about, but, me and Tanya advanced to second round, and lost to seventh seeds, in three sets, I think is not bad afterall. I know we could have been better but, it wasn't the time. We're be better prepared next time.

Q: You seem to love three sets.
GISELE NOVENTZ: (laughs) It's a good practising. (giggles)

Q: Ok, Gisele. We know you're tired, and you need to get ready for your semifinals. So congratulations, and good luck!
GISELE NOVENTZ: Thank you guys for all support during this tournament. I actually need a real rest (smiles). Bye.

Thanks Rosie for the comments. You played pretty damn good yourself. A few points here and there made the difference - definitely could have gone either way. And for it to be your worst surface is amazing too! :) Be proud! :)

Thanks also Bryanne for your comments! :) :) I don't know about smart, maybe a little lucky tho ;) hehe.....Thanks for ur well wishes too! :)

5th seed Marteena Huubere, of Australia, expresses her relief when a shot by Rosie Ribbons sails long on match point. Huubere won their SF match 7-6 7-6 to set up a final clash with world #1 Larisa Ferrer

Marteena said after the match:

"I can't say how much this means to me. I always thought I could play well on the grass, but the results and never really come before until this year. This was an incredibly tough match, Rosie really took it to me, and could have won the match. I'm a little lucky to get through, but very very happy. Tomorrow will be very tough. Larisa wants this title very badly, and she knows my game well, we've played against each other a lot, and ofcourse have played doubles together this year. To be in a grand slam final is almost a dream come true. It makes up for the loss in Roland Garros. I hope for the best tomorrow, but good luck to Larisa aswell! :) "

Darn, Krivencheva-Molik/Roddick lost in the 3rd round, 7-5 in the third, to a good team, no.1 ranked singles player Larissa Ferrer and her partner Hayley. Oh well, still a great result for Katarina, as she had a dismal performance in singles and ladies' doubles!

Day 9
6 of June, 2002
Women's Singles Semifinals

Larisa FERRER/Gisele NOVENTZ 3-6 7-5 6-3

Q: Larisa was too focused today. Did you ever thought you would win?
GISELE NOVENTZ: Never. Like I said before, I never think I already won the match. It's unpredictable, specially against Larisa. She won me again, she showed who's better. I never thought I would win, the way she played the rest of the match. I guess first set, I was focused.

Q: How did you suddenly lost the control of the match?
GISELE NOVENTZ: I don't know. I guess it's normal on tennis, things like this to happen. It's just wasn't my day. I tried to recover my lead on second set, but Larisa is more experienced on these situations than me, and she got everything right. There's nothing I could do so.

Q: Do you fell frustraded for not win Larisa?
GISELE NOVENTZ: Sorry?

Q: Was the 4th time you and her have played, and she won all the meetings. Is that frustrating?
GISELE NOVENTZ: If she won all meetings, it's cause she was better all the meetings, and she has credits for that, if not, I could have won. But no, she played better all the time, and won. There's nothing unusual there. Larisa is a great player, and can seems to be having, all days great for her on tennis (laughs)

Q: Gisele, Larisa also broke your streak on grass. You won Surbiton, a challenger, and s'Hertogenbosch. And did semifinals here. Your grass season was excellent.
GISELE NOVENTZ: Yeah, I knew about that. I never thought I would do so great on grass, like you said, I also won my first title on grass, and did my best Grand Slam result on grass. It's weird. I hope I can keeping the same strength during the rest of the year.

Q: You also can take fatigue as a factor of your loss to Larisa?
GISELE NOVENTZ: I don't know. I didn't played well the most important points. The second set was decided on details, and she has a slam on her belt, and was my first time on semifinals. She just played better and won.

Q: But a 3 setter match doesn't affect your stamina?
GISELE NOVENTZ: Yes. It affected me on Acapulco, if I'm not right. I was worry about that here too, but I just decided to play, even risking. I have re-done my schedule. I decided to skip Brussels next week, cause I really didn't expected to do so well here. Yeah, my stamina is not endless, I'm also used to three setter matches. (smiles)

Q: You can say you and Rosie Ribbons were the surprise here?
GISELE NOVENTZ: I think so. I played Rosie on grass, and her game suits so well here, that for me, it's not a surprise that she have done so well. Rosie is a great player, and her game also will rise. I expect the same thing from me. I'm happy for my performance here also. I never expected anything from me on Grand Slams. It's just my second slam as seeded. I was nervous, but in the end everything went fine. Of course, a final would be perfect, but wasn't the right time. I'm satisfied.

Q: So predictions for finals? Between Marteena and Larisa?
GISELE NOVENTZ: I prefer not too comment. I wish them good luck, and I hope they enjoy the final. It's gonna be a great final.

Q: Ok Gisele, so one more time, congratulations, on your tremendous perfomance here. And good luck next time!
GISELE NOVENTZ: Thank you guys. You were awesome to me during all tournament, and I only have to thank you for this. Goodbye. I'll try my best next time :)
