View Full Version : So Maria's out of Dubai...?

I still can't find an official confirmation of it, but GM is obviously salivating over the prospect. What the h*ll is it with those people? Really? How can anyone with a conscience take pleasure in someone being hurt? I especially like like the "Maria is chicken to play Serena and Ana" comments. They don't know her very well, do they?

As for Maria, I had a feeling this would happen. I guess it's for the best. My guess, and until I hear differently I'm sticking to it, is that something happened during her training or the vacation in Costa Rica. Maybe she fell, pulled the hamstring there, something. She obviously was in poor form in the Hong Kong exhibition--serving badly, moving poorly--though I didn't see that until TTC aired those matches after the AO. It didn't get much better in the AO. A healthy and in-form Sharapova would have killed Pin, heat or no, in 45 minutes. Whatever problem she was having was compounded by the heat in that match.

I think this has been building all year. For whatever reason, she wasn't ready for the AO and probably should not have tried to play Tokyo.

Hopefully, a few weeks off will allow that hamstring to recover fully. Maybe this is even precautionary--I'm sure that she doesn't want to compromise her Fed Cup committment by playing too much tennis at this point in the year.

Get well, Masha!

No official confirmation yet but it looks likely. It probably is for the best as you said. The last thing she needs now is another bad loss. Better to skip Dubai to get entirely healthy and ready for IW/Miami. Hoepfully, she'll have healed and sorted out whatever needs sorting by then. She has a lot of points to defend.

And yes, I really dont know what happened in the off-season. She said she trained for more than a month I think and was even saying how it was one of the best off-seasons she's had training-wise. So looking back, that was pretty ironic since she's done so much better at the AO/beginning of the year before coming off of an injury. Go figure, right! This season has been pretty messed up! :help:

And speaking of Costa Rica, just wondering, do we know who she went to Costa Rica with? If I remember correctly, her pix on the site only show her.

I thought Maria would be struggling to make Dubai and yeah she really needs to be in the best shape for IW and Miami. :)

Not a good time to be injured :( poor Masha

Hopefully shes 100% for IW/Miami

Okay there's still no confirmation. Is it really a possibilty or is this just a rumor, cause I haven't seen anything that would even hint at it. Just a post on GM that was started by someone who didn't post a link from where they heard this from.

Well, as many "Amelie is in/out of Antwerp" threads as there were in GM, it wouldn't surprise me if it was a hoax. I checked Maria's own website before starting this thread, and there was no news, not even on her message board.

However, if there is even the slightest possibility of lingering injury, she should definitely withdraw and fully recover rather than try to limp along throughout a good part of the season.

This suxI was worried this was going to happen. It has been a strange start to the season but hopefully she will be OK for IW/Miami plus she has basically nothing to defend on clay so there is a lot of chance for her to make up points then. I just hope this doesnt become a bigger problem. And also do you guys think this was the main reason she served so bad in Tokyo becasue of her injury ?

I'm not sure, but I thought she went with one of her friends. Wasn't there something about her doing something pretty physical and adventurous down there?

Then again, it could be just a freak thing with her hamstring. Clearly she hasn't been moving all that well since the beginning of the year, which may be a big part of why she was forcing the serve, to end points quickly.

All speculation of course. I just hope she gets better soon.

Im willing to bet it is true. The WTA would know about it and it would be in official lists etc but they wont be releasing it publicly yet, unless news breaks earlier .

I also have a feeling she would skip it due to her poor performances with Serena and Ana. She's obviously not in good shape.

Hopefully by the time IW comes around the real Masha will be back Im sure she will be very motivated to play the kind of tennis we all know she can.

I doubt Maria would back away from a contest with either of those 2 but she does not like to play when shes unable to give 100%.

I totally agree, when Maria plays with such passion and intesity its tough when things arent going right with the body. Im sure when she comes back she will be 100% again she wont come back anything less than that

Still none confirmation, still have your (toes) fingers crossed, it can be, I hope it's a rumor.
She really doesn't need this now (who does anyways?)/
It seems like she's cursed every single time she tops the rankings. It's soooo frustrating.

omg, it never really occoured to me that there was a chance of her pulling out, a little nieve of me i guess. i am just the etrenal optmist haha. This totally sucks!!!...Although this is the first i have heard of it. As it has been said nothing "offcial" So i am keeping an optmistic mind set haha. She would lose quite a few points if she did...having got to the final last year

It seems very likely that Maria will pull out if there is any trace of her hamstring injury left. That would be the wisest thing to do. It is stupid to play when you are in danger of worsening an injury.

But the idiots who say its because Maria is "frightened" of Serena or even Ana  are just off their heads. As fran said on the GM thread. I suppose Serena pulled out of India because she was frightened of meeting Bammer!

Its sad that Maria gets to No 1 twice, and twice instantly gets injured - but let's hope that this is only a slight injury and she's fine for Indian Wells and Miami.

Feb 14th, 2007, 05:01 PM
Well it's too bad, but if she's still injured it's for the best. I really hope she will take her time to fully recover.

And we all know that Masha would NEVER withdraw from any tournament just to avoid another player. Masha is highly competitive. So she wants to get back at Serena. And Ana isn't even on the radar. Come on guys Masha retired from that match.

So Masha take good care of yourself and I just know you have a good reason to withdraw from Dubai.

So good luck to you in Indian Wells and Miami.

Go Masha :yeah:

Only those with an agenda would believe or say they believe something like that. I'll bet that Clijsters would get a big laugh out of that one. After all, wasn't she on that big "winning streak" over Masha going into the AO? And Masha DARED show up for the "rematch"? How DARE she?

Yet because of the situation, it gives the haters ammunition, because no matter what the reason Maria is on the sidelines (IF she is) they will come out from under their rocks long enough to pretend that she is "avoiding" playing.

But Xan is right--by the same criteria, I guess Williams was avoiding getting her ass kicked by Santangelo in the rematch at Bangalore. After all--Serena had to be having her best ever day as a pro to get by the higher-ranked Santangelo Down Under....

See, this stuff can work both ways.

Well if she is still injured it's a good thing she withdrew, she can use the rest, it's a long season :)

But of course I'm still hoping to see Maria back in action and healthy next week.

Porcupine
Feb 15th, 2007, 08:58 AM
Well doesn't matter if she won't play next week. Masha needs to rest and be 100% ready for IW and SEO. Her injury must be the top priority atm, and Maria of course never want to risk her health.

But oh well, despite saying that, I hope Masha comes back healthy next week, which means she took good care of the hamstring.

It's good advice. Here in the States, hamstring injuries are extremely common in American football, and players can be plagued by nagging hamstring injuries all season long if they keep trying to play when not 100% healed.

It's unfortunate, and I'm sure she's disppointed, but better safe now than sorry later. She can always add tournaments later in the year.

yap, you should never joke around with injuries... though hehe i couldnt keep myself from playing tennis yesterday although i have a minor wrist strain... (it hurt a lot in the beginning, but the pain wasnt there in the last half hour or so) its just that we pay in advance and i love it so much ... so i couldnt do anything else, but playing :( stupid me i know.

hmm... i will masha aww... was waiting for her to play dubai aww... and well what worries me is that justine will most probably play and masha will lose all her points. i just hope that justine will have touch matches and lose early.. i know its unfair, but she is the one player atm that could take away mashas top ranking...

Justine won last year so the most she could do is defend her points. Masha's #1 rank is safe for quite a while... until the US hardcourts IW and Miami, I believe where if Amelie wins both of them she might overtake Masha.

Pretty ironic after everything that happened in GM the other day...but as the arguments were occuring with some again getting arrogant, I kinda knew in my heart that Serena would most likely withdraw as well.

Anyway, as I said, regarding Maria...this just confirms what we knew basically...we were all just awaiting an official statement. Well, I'm still sad as I love dubai lol...but she has to be 100%. I can't believe I have to wait till March to watch her play again but I'd rather have the long wait as long as she gets back completely healthy and ready to kill on court again. ;)

IW's just the weekend after Doha, so it's not that long of a wait. :) I hope Maria can work out all her issues and come out of the blocks well there. :)

I just hope it's as extensive as in the past, and not clips of matches shown during changeovers of men's matches. ESPN has been cutting back on their tennis coverage as of late--especially women's tennis. With so few Americans, I guess they figure nobody's watching.
