View Full Version : So are any of you going to Miami?

I've never been to a pro tennis tournament before. I decided this week that I am going to go to the Sony Ericsson Open this year. Will likely never get to a US Open, and this is the next best thing. Plus, it's only a few hours drive.

Has anyone here had any experience at this tournament? I have questions--if I am only going for a day, is it best to grab a "Daily Double" (day and evening package in the stadium court) or a "grandstand" ticket and try to catch action on the outer courts?

As far as seating, where is the best spot to watch from? I would naturally assume it would be from behind one of the baslines, as on TV, but....?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

For seating, the behind the baseline tickets are the best. :yeah: I prefer the seats closer to the corner because you get a really nice view of the court. :)

So, for example, in this map of the stadium, would you pick sections 405/417 or 404/406/416/418?

I would pick 404/406/416/418, although from higher up, it might be different. When I was in LA we were only 7 rows from the court. But I find the 404/406/416/418 angle to be better for me to take pictures. :)

Thanks! I might try for the 300 level instead, if I can afford it!

About for how long are you going and what's the price range on the tickets?

Well, I'm trying to figure out a schedule. I want to be guaranteed of seeing Maria, and with the schedule they have posted, picking one day is going to be tricky. These are the daily ticket prices :

http://www.sonyericssonopen.com/tickets/daily_tic.html

Premium tickets (box seats and 300 level) are here:

http://www.sonyericssonopen.com/tickets/prem_tic.html

I think I can pretty much write off the box seats. I think the best day would be Sunday the 25th, because the whole women's 3rd round is scheduled for that day/night. My second choice would be Saturday the 24th, though with my luck I'd get stuck with the half featuring players I don't care about.

If I can work it out, I'd love to go for the Saturday evening and Sunday day and night sessions and take a day off work on Monday to drive back. LOL.

Are you planning on getting a package? Because the deals on those are pretty good. :)

Yeah, I think the "Flex 4" package looks good. I'm not sure whether you want to go on opening weekend or second weekend though. :p

I'm comparing the ticket prices to the ones I got at JP Morgan last year, and damn, those Miami tickets are a lot cheaper than the ones in LA.

Really? That's good, I suppose (for me anyways). I would have thought Miami would be pretty pricey. Everything else down there is.

Second weekend would be great but I kindof look at it from the perspective that with the first weekend, I can get more tennis for the money.

Plus, where else could I see Maria and Federer maybe on the same day?

Anyhow, I hope it comes together. I really have to hear just how "offensive" all this screeching really is. ;)

Except are those prices for the seats that you want? Like in the 400s or 300s?

Or you could just skip the entire week of work and watch tennis to your hearts desire the whole week. :p

Nah, Maria isn't as loud as she is on TV. She barely made a squeak in the San Diego final. Although she was pretty loud in comparison in her match vs. Safina in LA.

I think it gets overblown. I've never heard any of the players say they are bothered with it. How could they be, really? They are all focusing on their own games. And I definitely don't think it is done on purpose. I was just as loud working out in the gym. If that's the way you are used to breathing when exerting yourself the hardest, it just happens.

Yeah, I would love to be able to take off a week and go stay in a nice hotel and watch the tournament every day and evening and wave to you guys on the TV. :p

Maybe if I ever can afford to retire.... ;)

Oh yeah you should go! You should have lots of fun! And every player will be there from both tours just like in a slam.

I wanna go! :awww:

Sharapova and Safina always have the loudest matches! Always! Dinara always tries to outdo Maria in the grunting and cmon-shouting departments and then the match just becomes a tension-filled gruntfest. It's torture watching their matches.

I find the best seats are on the opposite side to the umpires chair, near the front, just to one side of the net, maybe as far as inline with the service line. You get the best view of both sides of the net and its good for photos too...plus your infront of the players when theyre sitting down.

Maria does seem loud sometimes when your at the match, especially when its quiet, but its great to hear it live rather than on tv

I see. I sat in that position at the Stanford tournament, and I just didn't like it because you have to keep turning your head nonstop following the ball across the net.

I sat at the corner seat in LA, and it made for a really nice full court picture. And I had a 300 x zoom on my camera, so I could take good pics of the player across the net. :p And plus, the spot behind Yuri couldn't possibly be bad right? :p

we're only allowed 200mm max here at the AO, though mine is bigger they dont seem to check it :secret: unless its obvious

That's true. Ah well, at least it was fun to watch. :p

I don't think I had that issue actually, I think I was high enough.

There wasn't an issue with anything in my bag in LA, so I took a camcorder in and I took video for the first two days. I had my camera underneath these towels I used to keep from getting sunburns(not on purpose), and the security didn't check under the towels, so I was just  and took video for 2 days. And then one night match when I went in without towels or anything and just the camcorder, they're like, "you can't take video" and i'm like "no, i'm just taking pictures ()" and they're like "are you sure?" and i'm like "yes ()" and they're like "you'll get a big fine for taking video" and i'm just like whatever, so I only took picture for the final. :p But I honestly didn't know that you couldn't take video. :o

When I went to Stanford, there was no security period, and when I went to San Diego, there was no security there either. So I took video there no problem. It was only in LA where they had the thing about the video. I didn't understand why there wasn't security at Stanford or San Diego. Well it was pretty open at Stanford, there wasn't really an entrance. Same with San Diego. I was a little surprised that there wasn't even a security guard that I could see there.

:haha: true, gosh just had to laugh at this.

I had a corner front row behind the baseline seat once at the open at one of marat's matches...oh it was heaven (especially when they serve on your end)!

Sitting in front of the players and umpire is also good (its pretty tough though when your player is losing), but I'd have to take a corner seat there too, nothing in the middle so your head/eyes dont get too strained.

I didn't have a chance to sit down and look at the draw, and I just did. :o That reminds me of when a while ago, in this smaller tournament, he was unseeded and I was trying to pick who was going to win the event and I thought Gasquet had a pretty good chance to win against most of the seeds he would face, so I picked him. I think so, because Dan said that the price was pretty cheap. And plus USO series was damn expensive. :o

Yeah, I could probably go tomorrow and I could still probably get pretty good seats, but I don't want to get any more sick than I already am right now. The California events weren't really sold out at all, I ordered LA tickets really early, but they hadn't come in the mail after two months, and so I called the LA ticket place and apparently my order was lost in cyberspace, so I got tickets through the phone later and I still was 7 rows from the court with great seats.

:p Yea as long as you use 'Masha' then we'll know its either a big Maria fan or someone Russian

I am toying with the idea of wearing a t-shirt that says "I :hearts: Masha"cant go wrong with a Maria shirt ;)

I totally hate myself!!!! My mom told me that she would allow me to go to Miami if I was going to be in the top 3 in my class. During the USO I actually cut classes and missed 3 days of Chemistry. When I came back to school, there was a long quiz and I got a big fat F!! So now, we have three more quizzes+ the exams and I have to get A+ in all of them to stand a chance against the other three!!!
We have our breaks March-May and we go back to school in June.

Got my tix today!

I just hope she's healthy and plays!

 for you! How much did you buy the tix for and how many days you going to be there?

Just inform us on what you plan to do beforehand coz we'll be all eyes and ears. ;)

I got the "Flex 4" package for the first weekend, day and evening sessions for March 24 and 25, which is the 2nd and 3rd rounds for the women, and the second round for the men. Ticket was $110 for the four sessions. I think if you buy them all separately, it works out to something like $144, so it's not a bad deal. I can't just take off a week from work, so this was the best option for me. I figure I'll get to see Maria at least once in there, if not twice, plus many other name players. Kind of like an early round day at the US Open.

My only concern is sitting up in the 400 sections, near the top of the stadium. Guess I'll have to take binoculars.

If I like it well enough, I'm close enough to make it an annual trip, so next year I can order earlier and get better seats.

Sounds good! :D That's a pretty good price. Yes, taking binoculars is a good idea. And bring a camera with lots of zoom. It isn't a bad idea to bring a few towels to cover up your legs too, as it can get pretty sunny after sitting in the stands in a while.

So about fifteen pounds a session. Not bad.

Maybe you can get a seat upgrade later

I have a nice 35m SLR with a 200mm zoom, so I hope that will work out for pictures. Good idea about the towels! Hopefully it will be about 72 degrees. That would be perfect.

That is a good deal. :) Plus, you'll get to see all the action on the outside courts too if you wish. You get much closer to the players there. I'm not familiar with the grounds but the practice courts are a good bet to see the top players up close.

Don't forget to bring sunscreen! ;)

I'm not sure I can wander the grounds to the other courts with this ticket. Maybe, but I know the tournament does sell specific tickets for the grandstand and other outer courts. But I am pretty confident that Masha will be on the stadium court. ;)

Wow--have any of you ever tried finding a hotel in Miami for this tournament? Impossible. There is literally nothing available anywhere near the tournament site. And what good is staying out at the airport if you have to fight the traffic and pay a fortune for parking?

Looks like I am going to have to dump my tickets.

Really, really :(

Awww. No family that lives out there or anything? Do you know what the player's hotel is? Try getting that.

No family there. I checked the sonnyericssonopen.com website and all their hotels are booked. I imagine the players are booked through that. I had my travel agent look into it and she said there's nothing in and around Key Biscayne, Coconut Grove, or any of the immediate areas. I checked on the internet, and she was right. I mean, it may be possible to book a night at the Ritz Carlton or one of those high end hotels, who has a couple grand lying around to lay down on a hotel room?

:help:

I could take a chance and book something at the airport and drive in each day, but I really don't want to be driving around down there not knowing where I am going, especially after a late night session. I was really counting on getting something with a shuttle service to the tourney so I wouldn't have to worry about driving.

What a bummer. I was really psyched for this, too.

Do you have a chance of getting down there a little early and have some leisure time to drive around and get acquainted with the roads?

Well, after two weeks of looking, I was able to find a place in Coconut Grove. $250 a night (damn spring breakers driving up the prices).

But at least it looks like if the weather holds I'm going.

Somebody's gonna have to record any of Maria's matches for me from March 23-26....please!
