Tennis: Vaidisova blasts into second round
Tue 06 Feb, 8:11 PM

PARIS (AFP) - Teenage sensation Nicole Vaidisova thrashed home favourite Aravane Rezai to stride into the second round of the 600,000-dollar Paris Indoor Open.

Vaidisova needed just 50 minutes to wrap up a comfortable 6-2, 6-1 victory that was sealed in style with a searing ace.

The 17-year-old Czech, who started the season in fine form with a run to the semi-finals of the Australian Open, simply had too much power for 19-year-old Rezai, the daughter of Iranian immigrants.

The only previous meeting between the pair took place at last season's Roland Garros and Rezai benefited from the slower surface to force a third set before going down 1-6, 7-6, 0-6.

But on the faster indoor surface, the wildly erratic Rezai had no answer to Vaidisova's consistent power and booming serves.

The Czech next faces Lucie Safarova who gained a measure of revenge on teenage Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova with a tough 6-3, 6-7 (5/7), 6-3 first round victory.

Vaidisova
Feb 6th, 2007, 08:52 PM
"I played very well today, I kept very focused the whole time," said Vaidisova.

"I've definitely had a great start this year and came here feeling very good."

"She has had some good results recently. I'm not trying to find excuses but she played very well and I couldn't find my game," admitted Rezai.

Neptune
Feb 6th, 2007, 09:04 PM
"Contrary to the French open,I didn't let up and let her enter in this match. The surface suits to me and the indoor game is perfect for me.No wind,no sun,the conditions are ideal."

Hope my translation is all right.

Really disappointing especially Nicole had a great start of the yr, just beat Lucie a few weeks ago. And she said she came into Paris feeling well and stuff.

Nicole had so many problems holding(even tho she had a lot of aces) and in breaking Lucie's serve.

And now she doesn't play for like a month. This tournament was a waste of time now, only 1 win. :help:

Her worst weapon is her mental toughness. She doesn't believe in her at all.She needs to know that she is able to beat anybody on the tour but I think she doesn't believe in that to play as bad.
Need to work on her consistency.
But Lucie's game always caused damages on Nicole's game........So,no need to worry as she's going to lose everything now.But yea.........I'm worryed.

Well I know players have bad days and stuff but a lot of the great players are able to overcome and win the matches. Nicole shouldn't be losing these matches. She really could have gained a nice amount of points here but instead only won 1 match this week. And she's not gonna be playing for a month now, so who knows if that layoff is gonna be good or bad.

Her swings are long which hurts her vs. a player like Safarova who can hit deep, on a fast court.

At the Australian Open it was a totally different story.

Still, Nicole should be able to win a match like this on any surface.

Disappointing loss.

Maybe Nicole could have served better but Lucie was pressuring her a lot and obviously Nicole was a bit slow with the legs that day... Nothing serious even she was rather angry at the end...

Is Nicole "fan friendly"?

To me she was.

I asked for a picture and multiple autographs (:o) and she was very nice about it. Just when she loses sometimes she takes it hard for the short period of time after the match. I have seen her both win and lose in person, so yeah

She was nice too when I saw her. But,funny detail, she was running as fast as possible to avoid autographs and pictures. Only kids was lucky and some people who saw her when nobody was around. But she was always on the phone.....So,no way to ask her autographs...How cunning she is.:p
But,hopefully,I don't like to ask autographs.

As I said, Nicole had bad day :) but it isn't good :( so I hope for playing in Dubai or Doha but it's maybe too late for signup, I don't know, what do you think about it? :) (I ask to all not only to Carroll) ;)

OPEN GAZ DE FRANCE (Paris, France; indoor hard (Greenset), WTA Tier II)
================== http://www.opengazdefrance.com/ (http://www.opengazdefrance.com/)

NICOLE VAIDIŠOVÁ [5,EF]:
1r + Aravane Rezaď, 6-2 6-1
2r - Lucie Šafářová [DF], 4-6 2-6

At the time, this was a disappointing loss, as Nicole had beaten Lucie 6-1 6-4 in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open. But I'm glad Nicole beat Lucie at the AO, rather than beating her here and losing to her there!

But when Lucie went on to upset Svetlana Kuznetsova and Justine Henin-Hardenne - three top-10 scalps in a row, all in straight sets - my disappointment was replaced by the excitement of the emergence of a very nice new star!

Lucie's results here suggest that she has top-5 or even top-3 potential if she can maintain this form! It's just unlucky that Nicole had to draw her in the second round.

I hate voiceovers! :fiery: Why can't they just use subtitles instead?

In the second-round highlights, Lucie won the point of the day against Nicole, with wonderful hard, deep groundstrokes, and a crosscourt forehand winner just inside the sideline!

Also in the second-round video is Lucie's match-point against Nicole: a booming ace down the middle that made me chuckle!

I have just promoted Lucie into my demi-fanship on the evidence of the semi-final video (at the above link), and I would not be surprised if she would be the next player I would induct into my Eternal Fanship!

First round (Tuesday 6th February)
-----------

+ NICOLE VAIDIŠOVÁ [5,EF] d. Aravane Rezaď, 6-2 6-1

Aravane is an exciting player with a backhand just like Monica Seles, who can be extremely dangerous - or extremely error-strewn.

Nicole lost just 10 points on her own serve, and each set took just 25 minutes.

Aravane was serving at 2-6 1-4 (40/0), and Nicole was still hungry enough to dig for the break!

www.wtatour.com (http://www.wtatour.com):
>>>
Vaidišová, the No.5 seed, dominated France's Aravane Rezaď in just 50 minutes, 6-2 6-1. She won over three quarters of the points on her serve (never facing a break-point), and was impressive on the return, breaking Rezaď a total of four times in the match.

It was a stark contrast to their only previous meeting, a 6-1 6-7(6) 6-0 victory for Vaidišová at Roland Garros last year, when the French teenager overcame a 6-1 5-2 deficit and match-point to push it to three sets.

It has been an excellent beginning to the year for Vaidišová. She is 9-2 thus far, making semi-finals at Sydney (beating Daniela Hantuchová and Ana Ivanović along the way) and the Australian Open (defeating Elena Dementieva). Her only two losses, which were both very close, have come to players who have been on absolute fire - Jelena Janković in Sydney and Serena Williams in Melbourne.
<<<

Yes indeed: Janković, Williams and Šafářová were all unseeded, but on absolute fire! It's ironic that Nicole was the seed in all of those matches. :o

Agence France Presse (AFP):
>>>
Teenage sensation Nicole Vaidišová thrashed home favourite Aravane Rezaď to stride into the second round of the $600,000 Paris Indoor Open.

Vaidišová needed just 50 minutes to wrap up a comfortable 6-2 6-1 victory that was sealed in style with a searing ace.

The 17-year-old Czech, who started the season in fine form with a run to the semi-finals of the Australian Open, simply had too much power for 19-year-old Rezaď, the daughter of Iranian immigrants.

The only previous meeting between the pair took place at last season's Roland Garros, and Rezaď benefited from the slower surface to force a third set before going down 1-6 7-6 0-6.

But on the faster indoor surface, the wildly erratic Rezaď had no answer to Vaidišová's consistent power and booming serves.
<<<

Julien Pretot (Reuters):
>>>
There was no surprise for Czech Nicole Vaidišová, who thrashed Frenchwoman Aravane Rezaď 6-2 6-1 to reach the second round.

The fifth seed, who allowed Rezaď only 10 points on her serve, wrapped up the tie in 59 minutes to set up a clash with compatriot Lucie Šafářová in a rematch of their Australian Open quarter-final in the next round.

Vaidišová, who beat Šafářová in Melbourne, broke decisively in the fifth game to claim the first set in 30 minutes, and never looked back.

Rezaď, who was beaten by the world number nine in the second round of last year's French Open, struggled to cope with Vaidišová's ruthlessly efficient groundstrokes, and lost her serve three times in the second set.
<<<

Clément Lizet for www.opengazdefrance.com (http://www.opengazdefrance.com) (translated by Aurelia Ruetsch):
>>>
The beautiful Czech towering at 1.83m for 63kg was first to serve at the beginning of the match. All dressed in yellow, she won her point and kept the lead in the first set.

On the other side of the court, Aravane Rezaď was tailing her rival point by point... until 3-2. After two double faults, she lost her serve for the first time, and was led 4-2. More powerful at the baseline, Nicole Vaidišová (n°5) broke another serve to finish 6-2 in just 26 minutes, after a first set filled with direct faults.

The semi-finalist of the 2007 Australian Open didn't loose her grip on the match contrary to her previous match against the world number 43, last year in the third round of the French Open (6-1 6-7 6-0). The Czech broke another serve in the 3rd game to take the lead 3-1. Impressive in her serves (only 10 points conceded throughout the match), the player hailing from Prague finished the match in 50 minutes 6-2 6-1.

Nicole quotes
-------------

"I played very well today; I kept very focused the whole time. Contrary to the French Open, I didn't let up and let her into this match.

"The surface suits me, and the indoor game is perfect for me: no wind, no sun - the conditions are ideal.

"I've definitely had a great start this year, and came here feeling very good. I am very confident."

Aravane quotes
--------------

"She has had some good results recently. I'm not trying to find excuses, but she played very well and I couldn't find my game."

Second round (Thursday 8th February)
------------

- NICOLE VAIDIŠOVÁ [5,EF] lt. Lucie Šafářová [DF], 4-6 2-6

Nicole was broken in the first game of the match, and the rest of the first set went with serve. And Nicole couldn't break Lucie in the second set either, in which she found herself *1-5 down. :o

Global Guy [re. Nicole]:
>>>
Her swings are long which hurts her vs. a player like Safarova who can hit deep, on a fast court.

At the Australian Open it was a totally different story.
<<<

Perhaps Nicole's long swings could also be a reason why she does better on clay and hardcourts than on grass?

Clément Lizet (translated by Aurelia Ruetsch) (http://www.opengazdefrance.com/open_2007/article_152187_Friday_Who_could_ask_for_more.html) :
>>>
Lucie Šafářová hasn't finished making a name for herself. Last January she was incredible in her victory over Amélie Mauresmo in the round of 16 of the 2007 Australian Open.

The young Czech, freshly turned 20, amazed the public in Coubertin on Thursday as she easily returned Nicole Vaidišová serves rated among the best of the circuit.

As a talented left-hand player who likes to rush up to the net to finish off her points with volleys, Šafářová develops an alluring but highly risky tennis.
<<<

www.wtatour.com (http://www.wtatour.com):
>>>
Šafářová's win over the No.9-ranked Vaidišová marks her third career Top 10 victory; a victory over Patty Schnyder at Gold Coast last year was her first, and a win over Mauresmo in the round of 16 at the Australian this year was her second.
<<<

And now Lucie has five top-ten victories in her career!

PA SportsTicker:
>>>
Šafářová, who turned 20 last Sunday, needed just 72 minutes to oust Vaidišová, firing nine aces and converting three break-points. She will meet third-seeded Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova in the quarter-finals.

Cécile Verin (http://www.opengazdefrance.com/open_2007/article_152189_Safarova_takes_Vaidisova_by_surpris e.html):
>>>
No Czech tennis fan would have wanted to miss that second-round match, as it was a clash between Czech Republic's best two players: The world's number 9 Nicole Vaidišová, and left-handed player Lucie Šafářová.

Despite her higher ranking and greater experience of high-level matches, the former found it hard to get into the rhythm of the starting clash, and soon found herself down 0-2.

She then proceeded to take as much charge as the ranking difference between the two players should have allowed, and won her serve, putting a lot of pressure on Šafářová's shoulders with her strong line-hitting groundstrokes.

But that was not enough to prevent her opponent from staying one break ahead and, at 5-4, from getting three consecutive set-points. If Šafářová first gave the impression she was going to be too impressed to make it, her third attempt was successful, and a winning serve allowed her to claim the first set 6-4.

As soon as the second set started, it became obvious that the key elements were going to be the athletes' serves and returns, on which most of the points of the first game were scored.

And returns were precisely something Šafářová had turned out to excel at in the first set, and she did not tire in the second, making a real difference with that skill. It took Vaidišová almost ten minutes to simply win her serve game, while the older Czech won hers easily.

As the pattern of the match was becoming easier to read, no one was surprised when Lucie Šafářová followed suit and broke Vaidišová's serve not once but twice, moving ahead 5-1.

The world's number 9 managed to score one more game thanks to two winning serves, offering the Coubertin spectators the opportunity to find out whether or not her countrywoman was going to feel as nervous as she had when close to winning the first set.

Šafářová's clear answer was an ace which, after 1h12m, gave her a victory that looked like a very nice gift received only four days after her twentieth birthday.

At the training, some people told me, everything was ok.So,the lost is suprising. She was maybe too nervous.

Nicole quotes
-------------

{before the match}

"I know her very well; we are partners in Fed Cup. But whoever is on the other side of the net, I just concentrate on my own game."

Lucie quotes
------------

{after the match}

"I wanted my revenge after our quarter-final match in Australia. I was very concentrated in this match. There was a bit of tension because we know each other very well.

"I don't want to look ahead; I play my matches one after the other. I'd rather not set any precise goal. I can't wait to play against Kuznetsova. She's a very good player. It will be a great match."
