Thank you Summon for starting this thread now :D . Need something to really cheer me up today. Masha...please bounce back with a vengeance  .

Hmmphh...Seems like Maria is flying out to Tokyo asap. So she wouldn't be able to celebrate her mom's birthday. I hope Yelena will be able to console Maria. And really hoping to God Yuri is doing it also in private because he sure didn't from the player's box when Maria needed him the most :(

Good luck and take the title in Tokyo...

Her only main opponents there are Dementieva and Hingis. She owns Dementieva and won the last 2 meetings of Hingis. I'm expecting her to win in Tokyo.

She will probably do a little bit of retail therapy in Melbourne and then fly out. Hopefully Maria can play herself into form and build up her confidence again, this is an important tournament for her. Good luck Masha. I always like this tournament because they have the big meet & greet player party thing with heaps of pix.

I honestly don't know if she'll be ready for this. But if she is, she better kick ass. :)

Please double bagel everyone Masha!!! You're capable of it. In that way, maybe you could take out most of the frustration from the AO final. You might feel better. ;)

Francesca Schiavone (ITA) v (wc)Erika Takao (JPN)

Maria Croft
Jan 28th, 2007, 08:37 AM
Well, she has to work for it, Schiavone in the 2nd round, Peer in the QF who just played her best tournament in her career, Jankovic in the SF who is playing amazing as well, and then in the final Hingis will probably be waiting for her. It will be tough.

Incredibly tough draw for Masha  I'm very :scared: of Shahar :tape: She played great since the beginning of the year and we know she dislikes Maria so I guess she will be very motivated to beat her :scared:
Jankovic is also very tough as Summon said:scared:I agree with the poster above me and I think Maria's part of draw is much stronger than the bottom part:scared: but best of luck Maria! Prove you deserve to be the number 1 :bigclap: and take the title :bigclap: :bounce:

Maria is a level above them all in toughness and provided she improves her serve with more matchplay she will be very, very tough to beat.

Dislikeness may leads to another way as well. You can easily be angry with mistakes, and there she is - the one you dislike - across the net. Well confuses your mind a lot  Maria knows how to Peer. Plus Peer showed that she couldn't hold her nerve at big points, so I don't think there will be prob for Maria ;)

Well, there's not so many players capable of beating Maria atm, imho

Andy.

TOugh tough Draw but lets remember these girls are no Serena Williams, Maria played below par at the Aussie and still made it to the final beating some quality opponents. All she needs is to get a win under her belt and she will start to get her confidence back. Good luck Masha

not only 1st serve percentage is 35-40% in the 2nd set,
but she wins only 25% 1st serve points when 1st serve is successful!
I think she should go straight home, no more tournaments until Indian Wells,
practice serving until then.

markspot
Feb 1st, 2007, 08:36 AM
2nd set ended.
Even better:
1st serve points won : 20%
2nd serve points won: 29%
With this percentage of points won, the lower the 1st serve percentage, the better, 42% was way to high to win the 2nd set....
but 8 doublefaults in the 2nd set alone make you want more 1st serves in

such thing happend to her after Wimbledon 2004 when she changed the racquet, adapting to the new one was very painful, many many double faults,
but I don't thing she changed her racquet recently, still playing with O3 White. Or is she? Now Hybrid Tour and Tour racquets is a better choice, probably.
That would explain everything

On the other hand, look what's going on in the 3rd set:
78% 1st serves in, 86% points won on 1st, 100% on 2nd
Crazy. She may not want to go home now....

what an ugly match ! don't care she has points to defend she shouldn't played Tokyo TO MANY DF  i was thinking that after all that struggle she will not be able to close the match at 5-0 it went 5-1 but thank God she did ..she needs some time off to work on her serve and her confindence [with so many DF even if you win at the end you still might be a little shaky ] but she won and it does count an ugly match but she didn't lose it ! ;)

;) of that i'm sure ! that she didn't forget the final ! ;) this year is for the first time when i see Maria fighting with her serve and not with her opponent ! imagine how easy it was for Fran to stay on the other side of the net and watch Maria giving her free points 17DF that's more than 2 games right ? so if Maria would have lost this match she could say quite easily that she lost to her self .. i don't like what i see Maria playing AGAINST Maria instead of playing her opponent ..but she can rise her game hopefully from time to time when it's crucial ..so there's still hope for her at Tokyo [it's not a good thing that she playes here so soon after the final ]..but i don't cut her [yet ] from the list the third set was quite good even if she made some DF [at the end of the match  ] but she closed it and she didn't fall out like she did with Pin from 5-1 ..at least she didn't do that.. i give her the credit for a good 3rd set if it counts  now i'm quite interested to see Dementieva /Maria match before i always gaved the edge to Maria now ...the one who beats her self will be the one to lose

What is going on with her game and her serve I dont get it what has happened to her over the off season. Things are not looking good. At least she picked things up in that last set but for Masha her serve is the most vital part of her game when its on she is on she needs to get it back and soon.

I just assume that Maria demanded her serve to work for her, when it was 15-0, 0-40 or even 40-0, she still wanted a big serve, first or second, that or injury is the only explanation I can find for it. The AO must still be in her head, hope she can get it out of her system soon.

Bit of a dodgy start but thats often the way. Maria will improve....theres just times where the rythmn on serve goes off (mines like that all the time :tape:  ) 2nd serve is the problem...have faith she'll work on it

Yeah, sometimes, you just get on a streak like this. I don't think she needs to do anything drastic. As Pam Shriver said at the AO, she was serving "so bad" that beat Kim Clijsters 6-4, 6-2. We should all have a serve that bad.

17 doubles is atrocious. For pretty much anybody, that kind of performance would guarantee a loss. Yet the rest of her game must be pretty decent, since she won the 3rd set 6-1. Maria's not dumb. She knows she has to play better. Serve better. Maybe it's a slight mechanical glitch in her service motion. Maybe it's a lingering consequnce of her growing so much, and she just hasn't fully adjusted or compensated.

Bottom line is she is capable of playing much better--she's done it before, so it's not an issue of her being able to get there again. But realistically, what can she do now, in the middle of playing tournaments? She won't have time to do extensive work on her serve until she gets a break from the schedule. She'll have to grit it out this week, I imagine.

7 breaks of Maria's serve! That's awful.

And only 51 % first serves in.

She's continuing from Melbourne with poor serving. Hopefully it will pick up. She's relying on her rallying to win matches.

best of luck, Maria. Work on that serve!

the more she thinks about her serve troubles, the more troubles come her way...she needs to calm down and let her serve flow naturally...i dunno, i really dont understand what's going on......

the entire AO, i was hoping every match to see improvements on her serve - for her to get it back to the way it was during the US Open...never came, not even close...with what's going on now, it's most likely gonna take some time...just hope she gets it back before dubai.

If that's the fact then I have a feeling all can stop worrying about her serve. What that sounds like to me is a player WORKING TO IMPROVE her second serve, and willing to take the things she's working on and apply them in match situations. IF that's the case then as the second serve comes together, it could really take her game to the next level. HOWEVER, the glaring hole in my little theory here is the implication that Shapo was willing to "work" on her second serve during the AO finals. I tend to doubt she'd be willing to do that. The other alternative is that she's been working on it and has sort of lost her way and can't get back to her old second serve, but can't master whatever she might be working on.

  Of course all this could be a bunch a BS. Actually, I have no idea what the hells goin' on with her serve. It's truly strange though to see a world #1's serve abandon them so completely.

I think similarly, sort of.
I think that the problem with these DFs is mental.
Although different than, for example, Dementieva's.

I think Maria knows that she can eliminate those DFs whenever she wants.
She serves them not because of the fear of the opponent's returns,
but because of disrespect to the opponent, so to speak.
She is mad at herself because of the problems with her 1st serve,
and she uses 2nd serves to practice her 1st ones.
She would not do that (hopefully) with a really strong opponent.

Hopefully she will be able to drop the double fault numbers a little more against Ana and if she gets thru that maybe a little more again. I think it will be a process of ganing confidence and workjing then out of her game. Well done Masha

I hope your right, Justine and Serena went thru the same periods.

Justine, yes, but not Serena- at least not so dramatically as what Shapo's going through now.

Serena's gone through tough periods with her first serve, but not so much with her second, except for periods where it's less effective than others. Justine has gone through tough periods, but for different reasons. Justine completely retooled her serve to compete with the big hitters. Serena's serve hasn't really fundamentally changed sinced '99. The thing that concerns me about Serena was watching her throw in ill-timed DFs. She didn't do it a lot, but she did it at some very tense times.

Masha- IF she's retooling her serve- reminds me more of Henin rough patch. I just hope Shapo's isn't the result of a nagging injury.

Lena's game doesn't rely on her serve either. Her whole game is built to win matches with a crap serve. Maria's is not. She is like Lindsay, the serve is too important for her to find her best success without it.

I find the other part to be a little uncalled for. I won't respond to it. :tape:

I have all the stats together to see at a glance, very convenient,

Better go to the website of the tournament and look yourself,
I could post screen captures but why when you can see yourself the original

Maria has dropped the first set 6-1 to Ana. Masha has two doubles to zero aces, Ana has three aces to zero doubles. Ana is having a heyday with the Sharapova second serve. Ana seems to be playing quite well. Sharapova needs to kick it up a notch to stay alive....

From her official website :

MARIA RETIRES INJURED IN TOKYO

Maria has pulled out of her match against Ana Ivanovic of Serbia in Tokyo with a hamstring injury. The score was 1-6 1-0 when she retired.

Maria has been feeling pain since the Australian Open, but was hoping she could play through it. This is what Maria said:

"It's always difficult to end the tournament this way, I was hoping the pain would settle or get better, but against a top player it is hard to get away with not serving or returning well."

"My left hamstring has been having tightness since the Australian Open but after a grand slam you are tight all over," said Sharapova, who lost to Serena Williams in the Melbourne Park final last weekend.

"But this was a sudden sharper pain after I landed after the serve. I asked the trainer and she said these kind of strains take seven or 10 days to recover from, so hopefully I can recover quickly."

I'm upset Maria is injured yet again and had to retire from her match against Ivanovic down a set. :( But I'm glad it has nothing to do with that right shoulder and right pectoral injury that lingered for parts of late 2004 much of 2005 and early 2006 which her her preperation for the Australian Open.

This loss to Ivanovic has to be very hard on Maria because it's the first time she has ever lost a singles match to a younger player as a professional or junior. And to get shelled 6-1 in the fist set by Ana had to stun Maria.

TORAY PAN PACIFIC OPEN (Tokyo, Japan; indoor carpet; WTA Tier I)

MARIA SHARAPOVA [1,EF]:
1r bye
2r + Francesca Schiavone, 7-5 2-6 6-1
qf + Ai Sugiyama, 4-6 6-0 6-1
sf - ANA IVANOVIĆ [5,DF], 1-6 1-0 retired (left-hamstring strain)

I was kind of surprised that Maria even played this tournament after reaching the Australian Open final the week before. I guess she's not the kind of person to renege on her commitments.

She continued to struggle with her serve - as she had done in the AO final - with 31 double faults in her first two matches here! I hope this was just due to the injury, which was expected to take 7-10 days to heal.

Ana becomes the first player who is younger than Maria, ever to defeat her in a match that counts towards the WTA rankings! I had hoped that this record would fall to Nicole Vaidišová after a tough three-setter (Nicole did beat Maria in a World Team Tennis rubber in July 2004), but I don't mind too much that it was Ana, of whom I'm a demi-fan. It's just a shame that it had to be by retirement - there's a part of me that still feels that Maria has never lost to a younger player!

It's always a special pleasure to see the Super Maria Sisters together. Sometimes, when I see them apart, I think that Maria Kirilenko looks prettier, but then when I see them together, Big Maria always makes a point of outprettying Little Maria! ;)

Having said that, I must admit Little Maria's on-court beauty was better than Big Maria's - or anyone's! - that week. :hearts:

It's strange to think that Little Maria is already 20 while Big Maria is still 19!

It's great to see that they're still good friends after all these years, as their careers diverge.

+ MARIA SHARAPOVA [1,EF] d. Francesca Schiavone, 7-5 2-6 6-1

The match lasted 2h13m. Maria served 17 double faults!

The first set alone lasted 1h07m! Maria recovered from 1-3 and 3-5 to take it 7-5, so it could so easily have been a straight-sets defeat.

But Maria definitely has a knack of winning sets from behind, as she demonstrated several times during her 19-match winning-streak last year.

World number one Maria Sharapova responded to a scolding from her coach to beat Italy's Francesca Schiavone 7-5 2-6 6-1 and reach the quarter-finals of the Pan Pacific Open on Thursday.

The 19-year-old Russian twice fought back from a break down to take the opening set, but suffered a total meltdown in the second, earning her a ticking off from coach Michael Joyce.

With on-court coaching allowed in Tokyo, Joyce did not mince his words when he sat next to a sulking Sharapova at the change of ends.

"Find a way to win!" he snapped at her.

Still scowling, Sharapova hit back with steely resolve, storming through the deciding set to book her place in the last eight of the $1.3 million tournament.

The world's No. 1 women's player turned her game around after a courtside lecture from coach Michael Joyce during the break between the second and third sets.

"It all goes back to your serve," Joyce told Sharapova. "You've just got to get it together and find a way to win."

Maria quotes
------------

"I always find it tough to get into a rhythm in my first match here. It took longer than I wanted, but I'm happy to get the win.

"It takes time to get used to everything. I came from Melboune - the sun, outdoors - and now I'm playing indoors under the lights on a different surface. This year, I didn't have as much time to get used to conditions as in the past, because before, I lost in the semis in Melbourne and was able to come earlier."

[Re. Michael Joyce's coaching]

"He just told me to keep fighting. I didn't play my best tennis in the second set - or the first for that matter - and he just told me to fight for every point."

Quarter-finals (Friday 2nd February)
--------------

+ MARIA SHARAPOVA [1,EF] d. Ai Sugiyama, 4-6 6-0 6-1

It was only their second-ever meeting, but both times Maria dropped the first set, and came back to win in three. Their first meeting, of course, was the Wimbledon 2004 quarter-final, which Maria won 5-7 7-5 6-1. Sugiyama is 31 now, so I guess it only takes one set to tire her out! ;) (I can say that because I'm 31 too.)

Sugiyama broke Sharapova to win the first set, but was no match for the No. 1 seed from then on.

<<<

Alastair Himmer (Reuters):

World number one Maria Sharapova battled her way into the semi-finals of the Pan Pacific Open with a 4-6 6-0 6-1 victory over Japan's Ai Sugiyama on Friday.

The Russian, who won the Tokyo title in 2005, moved a step closer to a potential showdown with Martina Hingis in Sunday's final despite struggling mightily with her serve.

Sharapova squandered a 3-1 lead to drop the first set, but quickly recovered after a calming head-to-head with coach Michael Joyce to whitewash Sugiyama in the second.

Sharapova has dismissed on-court coaching as a gimmick, but she only clicked into gear in her opening match against Italy's Francesca Schiavone following an ear-bashing from Joyce.

Watched by Japan's Prince Akishino, Sharapova made another rapid transformation after dropping the first set, winning 12 of the next 13 games to advance to the last four.

Maria quotes
------------

{before the match}
"I haven't played her in a while, but we've practised together, and I know her game. She's a tough opponent; she will have the crowd behind her. She's a feisty player, can get to a lot of balls."

{after the match}
"It's never easy against Sugiyama. She had the crowd behind her, and was able to take the first set, but I'm glad I was able to come back and win.

"I was worried about my serve a little too much in the first set, which resulted in me not being aggressive. There are going to be days when part of your game is off, and here, it's my serve. And when that happens, you just have to concentrate on the things that are going well. But I did a good job of focusing on the things I was doing well, and continued to do that.

"I was giving Ai all the time in the world to do her thing. I wasn't going for my shots in the first set. Michael told me to step in and be more aggressive.

"She was playing aggressively in the first set and I wasn't making my shots. Michael told me to move it around and play more aggressively, and I started making my shots and gave her less time to do what she wanted to do.

"I'm not going to win too many matches serving the way I'm serving. I don't think I'm going to get away with it too many times, especially against higher-ranked players. I've been able to step up my game in other ways, and I can't keep worrying about [my serve]. It's just a matter of going out there and focusing on what I'm doing well. I can't let it affect me."

[Is any tweaking of your service-action to blame for all the double faults?]
"No. Don't need a translation for that!"

Sugiyama quotes
---------------

{before the match}
"I think Sharapova has really developed as a player. She's worked on her weaknesses, and has really improved all around."

{after the match}
"I ran her around in the first set, then she did the same to me in the second! She was dominating, and I couldn't answer her points. She raised her level and I couldn't hurt her; she was hitting deep and on the lines. Except the serve, she was just perfect today."

- MARIA SHARAPOVA [1,EF] lt. ANA IVANOVIĆ [5,DF], 1-6 1-0 retired (left-hamstring strain)

I've said it once before, but it bears repeating: Ana is the first player who is younger than Maria, ever to defeat her on the WTA Tour, the ITF Women's Circuit, or in a Grand Slam!

www.wtatour.com (http://www.wtatour.com):
>>>
The 19-year-old, who regained the world No.1 ranking on Monday, had called for the Tour's primary healthcare-provider at the set-break, and was able to play just one more game before retiring.

Prior to the retirement, Ivanović had displayed impeccable serving, firing three aces, and not facing a break-point in the abbreviated, 33-minute encounter.
<<<

James Mulligan (Reuters):
>>>
Fifth-seeded Ivanović stormed into a one-set lead as an out-of-sorts Sharapova struggled on serve, and the top seed called for her trainer at the end of the first set.

With on-court coaching allowed in Tokyo, Sharapova and coach Michael Joyce had a testy exchange with the umpire after the player was initially denied treatment for her injury.

An angry Sharapova, who won the tournament in 2005, demanded to see her trainer, and Joyce accused the umpire of not knowing the rules.

The trainer was eventually allowed on court.
<<<

If there's one thing that gets my blood up, it's dealing with jobsworth officials who try to b******* me out of my rights because they don't know the rules! :fiery:

It's safest to carry a copy of the rules with you, so that you can always prove that you are right!

To the best of my knowledge, Maria was right and the umpire was wrong. I hope they lodged a complaint against that umpire with the appropriate ombudsman (oh, how I love that word).

Maria quotes
------------

"It's always {difficult/disappointing} to end the tournament this way. I started to feel pain in the second game of the first set. I tried to go on, but you can't get away with it when you are playing against a top player.

"I started to feel the tightness at the Australian Open, but this was not the same pain. After six or seven matches in 14 days, you're bound to be sore, but suddenly it was a sharper pain. I was serving, and when I pushed off and then landed, I really felt it.

"The pain didn't get any better, but I tried to continue. I couldn't push off on my serve and couldn't return as well, which is tough because those are the two most important shots.

"My left hamstring has been having tightness since the Australian Open, but after a Grand Slam you are tight all over.

"But this was a sudden sharper pain after I landed after the serve. The physio told me that it usually takes about seven to ten days to recover, so hopefully I can recover quickly. I was hoping the pain would settle, but against a top opponent like Ana, you're not going to get away with too many things: it is hard to get away with not serving or returning well.

"I have a simple and easy schedule compared to the other girls. There's no doubt it's difficult when you come straight from a Grand Slam. The surface here is quite different, and the change in court might have something to do with it."

So here's the 411 on the injury.....My hamstring had been sore for a couple of weeks now, started in the middle of the Open, but I was able to keep it under control. Then in the second game of my last match I landed on my left leg after a serve and felt a much sharper pain than I had felt before and it didn't get any better after a couple of games. It's the worst feeling having to retire in a match! I can't even tell you! I'll have to get treatment everyday now and hopefully be able to hit some balls again tomorrow.

I've no idea what a "411" is - it looks like an Americanism to me.

Ana quotes
----------

{before the match}

"Always, as a professional, you want to play and beat the top players, so I am excited about playing Sharapova tomorrow. It will be an extremely tough match. On this fast surface, it is tricky: you have to be very focused, or you can lose a point before you realise it.

"Maria is in good form. She's coming off a final in Melbourne where she won some good matches. We had a tough match at Linz at the end of last year. I lost, but it was still a good match for me, and I think I'm continuing to improve."

{after the match}

"It's unfortunate that she had to retire - it's not the way I like to end the match. However, I felt confident during the match; I was able to play aggressively, which is very important against Maria. You don't want to give her much time."

^[This is a very classy reaction to Maria's retirement IMO. A less classy person might have said, "I was playing well enough to win, so I deserved to win, and it's no less of a victory because she retired on me."]

"During the off-season, I worked on my serve because it needed improvement. I also worked on my upper-body strength; I'm happy to see the results already."
